Santa Monica's Electric Trash Truck Demo

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So less than two weeks after stumbling upon this truck in Van Nuys while the City of L.A. was running it I stumbled upon it again down on the Westside in Santa Monica. Santa Monica had it for a few weeks early this summer and had it running in place of their so-called "Ambassador Truck" (Ford F Series New Way Diamondback). Not sure what the overall satisfaction level was from everyone involved after everything was said and done but I can tell you that the crew didn't like it and said it had no power. For the time being it looks like they don't have any serious plans to look further into electric trucks and they will be staying CNG as they have since 1997. Thanks to the crew

What kinda stone age crap is this, no radio controls for the hydraulics? Takes forever to manually cycle.

Why do none of the trucks have fully automated compactor controls over there? Seems a lot of time is spent yanking levers and waiting for the cycle to finish so you can pull another. UK/EU trucks do this themselves, even the lift is auto, just drop the bin onto the lift and stand back. As soon as the bin hits the floor its off to the next one while the truck takes care of the rubbish. Is it a union 'your not taking our job' reason?

HughzieTube US laws and safety standards don't allow it. You must have an interrupted 2 step cycle with the blade stopping 6 inches from the hopper sill. Also, there's a lot of added expense for electronic controls vs mechanical linkages and levers that most equipment buyers don't want to pay for.

Thanks for that SCSITerminator, Makes sense looking at the low accessible design of US trucks compared to here over the pond. The hopper/Compactor area access is more head height and enclosed here so is safer in the respect to not being able to 'falling in' or even be within touching distance from the operator. This is the style that empties my bin. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6qIyrJmea-Tg5s.html

Why do UK/EU trucks need those curtains above the hopper? Also do you happen to know if that truck in that video is a Auger compactor? I couldn't at all hear a hydraulic motor operating in the video.

Rodj the curtains aren't necessary just to stop the dust blowing out of the hopper it's mostly only new trucks that have them they rip after a while

I agree. When I was a garbageman in the 80's we had a 1 step hopper control arm. I guess I can see what the person (in replies) said about safety reasons but I never heard of anyone getting hurt with the 1 step system. I also never seen a hopper mechanism like that and it doesn't look like the tub holds very much.

Interesting to see the electric truck again. The helper didn't look like he was having any fun with this truck lol. How come an ASL wasn't on this route? The streets like like fine for an ASL. Don't know way to think of electric trucks, they don't sound good like diesels do. Great video!

Trash Man Daniel The helper wasn't even doing his job right, why dump a can when your work area is full?. Makes no sense instead of having to dump it when empty jerking the can back & forth while it's just recyclables. I use to do this as a laborer for WM in Port Charlotte, I learned the hard way to do it easy. Now yard waste that's completely different as one can versus a whole bunch of them & garbage was a lot of cycling too. Yard waste I just packed it in then cycled.
