    I know not exactly same class but what are your thoughts vs the Yeti SB130, particularly on climb? My guess is Yeti is more efficient in open mode on most climbs but maybe Tallboy has better traction on really techy stuff? Thanks for the great review!

  • @bikersedge

    @bikersedge

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thats a tough call. The Yeti may be a touch more efficient but it weighs more. Those two might cancel each other out. I'd think overall the Tallboy is a better climber than the 130 due to weight and shorter overall suspension to sag into if that makes sense.

    @@bikersedge I just wanted to follow up in case helpful for anyone. I ended up having the opportunity to spend lots of time on both the Tallboy and the SB130 in Crested Butte and here are some thoughts: I rode the XL in each. I'm 6'2". I rode the GX ~$5,000 build in both. The sizing on the Tallboy felt spot on. The Yeti maybe a hair big. The SB130 feels like it needs to be ridden hard. I found it understeers when riding more mellow and you're not aggressively the bars. The Tallboy is more playful and easier to throw around. Could be because reach is a tad shorter. There's also some magic in that VPP platform where it feels plush on downhills yet still lively and easy to boost off of little features. On climbing, I've always considered myself to be a Yeti person because I love how you can stand and stomp and the switch infinity just accelerates. It's amazing to me. The Tallboy has a little bob when stomping on it, so I found myself switching the rear Fox shock to trail mode (the middle setting). When I did that, the pedal platform was firm and supported standing and stomping while still having good traction. On the Yeti I left it open and never touched it. For seated spinny climbing, the Tallboy didn't bob at all, for what it's worth, and had great traction. For descending, I'd say the SB130 is more capable if sheer speed is the goal. That big fork and long front end makes it fast. I felt like I was a better rider on the Santa Cruz though. I could be more precise. I ended up buying the Tallboy. It won on fun factor for me.

  • @bikersedge

    I mean you could. Santa Cruz recommends 130mm up front. You'd want to make sure that going to 140mm won't void your warranty as the axle to crown height might be too tall. Personally, I wouldn't mess with it. The seat tube angle is slack enough as is (especially for tall guys like me) and it's only going to get slacker with a longer fork. I also don't think it needs it. At that point, just buy the Hightower.

    You certainly could ride those trails on a hard tail. I mean technically you could ride any trail on a hardtail. Just google "Tresspasser Whistler Hardtail" if you want an example. Keep in mind there is a bit of the GoPro effect in our video. There are a few rocky bits that longer travel bikes will allow you to hit faster. I know because I've ridden this trail on LT and ST bikes. There might be a trend of over-biking, but that trend is what has allowed a lot of folks to have the confidence to ride a wider variety of trails. @@cisko213 Fuel Ex is way bigger, better comparison would be Top Fuel. Fuel Ex will handle better repeated and bigger hits. Also it does pedal very well, if you are using the pedal mode on the shock, gotta admit ReActiv works, but will not climb as fast as a Ripley, probably will climb similarly to the Tallboy, but will get less hung up on the front wheel when facing technical climbing, roots in example, because of the HTA.

    Both are pretty impressive bikes in their own way. The Ripley will be amazing on the ups and better than expected on the downs. The Tallboy does fine on the climbs but absolutely likes to party on the downs.

    What about difference if you add 140 to Ripley? Could be ideal....

    @@jkm8089 The Tallboy still descends much better than a Ripley even with a 140mm fork. I've tried it.

    @JF It was just a shadow to the left of the trail ahead, but it kind of creeps in.
