So beautiful kriti of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal..."Anandavalli kuru mudama viratam "...still not popularly seen in cutchery circle....Really appreciate Sanjay now celebrating the same with so much of devout in his rendition . reminded Maharaja's other Nilambari krities..." hanta jiva naayakan maranno" ; 'kalakanthi! kathankaaram sakhi! vismaraami; ' Panca sayaka janakan" ;' saarasa shara sundara maamava dinam sarasa guna nivaasa",,,,,, Neelambari.Janyam of 29th mela Shankarabaranam...is soothing like a lullaby....is nothing but the 'Megaraga Kurinji'of the ancient Tamizh pann system ! It is said to be able to induce sleep and also have some sleep promoting qualities even!! The Nilambari best listened in 2021,may be 'Thalattu Padum", a composition of 'Krishnadasan', sung by the promising Vocalist- S Saketharaman . The other one is by super star vocalist Sanjay Subramanyam -"Kanak-kan Ayiram" composed by Anai Iyer and Annavaiyyar (composed both in Telugu and Tamil and used the mudra Umadasa). The Tamil Kriti may be just one..."Eppadithan en Ullam", composed by Oothukkadu Venkata Kavi. Of course, the first ever popular Nilambari will be none other than Omanathinkal Kidavo (ഓമന തിങ്കള്‍ കിടാവോ ) a lullaby in Malayalam that was composed by Irayimman Thampi on the birth of Maharajah Swathi Thirunal of Travancore. To date, it remains one of the most popular lullabies in the Carnatic Music world!!! . It was composed by Thampi at the request of the then ruler of Travancore, Maharani Gowri Lakshmi Bayi, to put the baby King Swathi Thirunal to sleep. His birth was a long awaited event for the Royal Family since it faced the threat of being annexed into British India under the Doctrine of Lapse for the want of a male heir. The lyrics of the poem reflect this sense of relief when it refers to the baby as a 'treasure from God' and 'the fruit of the tree of fortune. The lullaby was originally composed in the Kuranchi raga and set to Adi tala, Still it is popularly recited in the Navaroj or Nilambari ragas. Unbelievably the said lullaby doesn't mention the word SLEEP in it even for once. But the SLEEP is induced by the effect of the raga! The song lends itself well to the expressions of the navarasas and is therefore often set to dance. Here the Maharaja Swathi Thirunal's "."Anandavalli kuru mudama viratam "by Sanjay is exceptionally melodious.....while the King poet poet begs the beautiful Goddess to grant him eternal happiness ! Lovely slow paced rendition as entailed by the Composition....sung sworama....Chittasworam only , probably composed by Maestro SSI ; Sung Charanam 1 only skipped 2 and 3. But the recital is outstanding indeed..best wishes

Superb, excellent, exquisite - Great rendition by the genius. The same song is sung by Srivalson Menon which is also outstanding - his voice is mesmerising. This master has sung exemplary well but Srinivalson has nector & magnetic voice. Pleasr don't mistake me as my first favourite none other than Sanjay. I meant only about the voice.

Raga Neelambarin Janyam of 29th mela Shankarabaranam. Alias: nilambari Arohanam: S G3 M1 P N3 S Avarohanam: S N3 P D2 N2 P M1 G3 R2 M1 G3 S A raga that is soothing, like a lullaby that cradles one’s senses, is Neelambari. This is a raga that is associated with relaxation, peace, and slumber. A janya of Shankarabharanam, Neelambari has gamakas that flow seamlessly from one note to another, blending subtle notes, like a shading on a canvas, and finally it all merges into one phrase that make so much sense. This raga brings forth piety, devotion, and maternal instincts in one’s heart. In the ancient Tamizh pann system, ‘Megaraga Kurinji’ is the equivalent of Neelambari. It is interesting to note that the Hindustani raga Neelambari has no semblance to the Carnatic Neelambari. The arohana - avarohana of this raga is SRGMPDNS / SNPMGRGS, this being theoretical, of course. In practice, this raga is defined by its characteristic phrases such as ‘SNDNSNP...’, and by the various ways the oscillation is imparted to the madhyama note. The notes in this raga apart from sadja and pancama are chatusruti rishabha, antara gandhara, suddha madhyama, chatusruti dhaivata, and kakali nishada. The kaisiki nishada occurs as a bhashanga swara (foreign note) and may be noticed in phrases such as ‘PDNDDPMG’. Several lovely kritis are available in this raga. Tyagaraja’s ‘Ennaga Manasu’, ‘Uyyala Lugavayya’, and ‘Laliyugave’ are absolutely divine and calming. Tyagaraja, in these pieces, cradles Lord Rama in his mind’s eye - sitting him down on a swing, adorning him with fragrant petals, and so on. Dikshitar’s ‘Amba Neelayadakshi’ is a masterpiece on the Mother Goddess. ‘Brovavamma’ of Shyama Sastri is noteworthy, while ‘Thugidhale’ of Purandaradasa is also sung in Neelambari. Ponniah Pillai’s ‘Amba Neelambari’ is regal, while Narayana Theertha’s ‘Madhava Mamava’ is simplistic in appeal. Oothukadu Venkatakavi’s ‘Maninupura Dhari’ describes Lord Rajagopala’s dance with his anklets clinking like celestial bells - ‘kana kankana kinkini kana’.
