Sanders Defends Gay Soldiers, 1995

Sixteen years before "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ended, then-Rep. Bernie Sanders took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to defend the "thousands of men and women who have put their lives on the line" to defend our country.

But today plenty of politicians say transgender people are pedophiles, groomers, what have you. In Florida a teacher can get sued for having a pride flag on her desk because it violates the parent's bill of rights. Is that moving foreword? well unfortunately Bernie's ideas are seen as communist when in reality he embraces the idea that Europe has implented, things like universal health care, protecting the rights of marginalized groups, and so on; half of the USA still has archaic conditioning that is stopping a leader like bernie from becoming president

Bernie is openly socialist, which, because of years of propaganda from the government, means that liberals and conservetives tend to hate him or think he's a violent stalinist extremist. In most western countries, he would just be seen as a leftist politician, but in the USA he's a radical leftist, which automatically makes him evil to those on the other side.

He served eight years, but not before resigning from the House in 2005. The gentleman from Vermont, on the other hand, was once arrested (with a smile, I might add)at a civil rights demonstration in 1963 involving school segregation. @@denenterpriesesorwhatsleft6386 Congrats, you fell for false advertising. Hitler used the term Socialist as a term to pull people in aka propaganda. The Strassers expanded the Nazi party by tying nationalism and Socialism together to appeal to the working class and poor citizens. In the 1920s Hitler sought the support of wealthy industrialists to push anti-socialist policies. When Otto Strasser realized the Nazis were neither Socialist or a party of workers so he left to form the Black Front, the left wing section of the Nazi party. In the 30s Hitler aligned himself with nationalists and conservatives who believed and supported Facism solely. Not long after that Socialists, Communists, Jews, and democrats were purged from civil service and labor unions were outlawed which goes completely against the basic tenents of Socialism. Hitler also had Gregor Strasser and other Socialists murdered to keep down the dissent. Any traces of Socialism had been extinguised by the mid-1930s. I'm not sure how you got the idea that people are uneducated for bringing up the fact that he had Socialists killed and had them removed from their jobs. That's just a fact. I'm sorry you can't change history to fit your narrative but the Nazis were nationalists and despite 'free" healthcare they did not espouse basic socialist ideals.

  • @wonderwhatsnext5408

@JHeints - Why do we have a $700B military budget? Absolutely no need for it to be that much. Tanks are produced and just sit on lots costing taxpayers millions every year, when that money could be better spent elsewhere. Should we have to subsidize our war-hungry presidents' expenditures, brought on by fiscally poor decisions? Somehow it's fine for a snake bite to cost a camper $140k in medical bills, and also fine to be mass producing tanks for $4.3 million a unit when they won't be used by anyone... Not sure what country you're living in where college is cheap. Go to a top school or even a public 4 year university after transferring credits from a community college and you're still looking at tens of thousands a year in loans. That's not even including professions like medicine or law, where students are required to take out $200k+ in loans that definitely won't be getting paid off in two years after graduation unless you want to sleep in your car and shower at the local gym.

  • @wonderwhatsnext5408

@JHeints - Paying anything for college is expensive by comparison when looking at other first world countries that have government funded four year degrees. Likewise, there are more than just a handful of EU nations that provide free or extremely low cost post-secondary education while also allowing access to universal healthcare; namely Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, and France. Is it any surprise, then, that most of these countries also rank among the highest in the world in terms of 'happiness'? The status quo has worked for us, and will continue to work, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a new, better standard that would fit Americans better. That's what we should strive for.

If you're born after 9/11 I'm pretty confident you have no idea how openly and wholeheartedly homophobic the entire culture of the United States was until only about the mid to late 2010s. Like, super super recently things changed en masse, but it's not like there's just some people in a backwater not being ok with gay people. I'm the youngest millennial, but I watched it happen in real time. Gay was THE insult when I was a kid, I'm talking 1st and 2nd grade calling each other gay which we only understood to mean "bad, stupid or weak". This was a topic in high school for us, in 2008-2012. Even Obama was openly against gay marriage, because EVERYONE HAD TO BE at the time to hold any sort of office. It changed before my eyes, they had commercials with teen celebrities telling us, the teens who were on MySpace and the first young users of Facebook, that it wasn't ok to say "gay" as an insult. So for this man to be standing up IN CONGRESS the year after I was born and defending gay people was career unalive. Absolutely self imolation, unheard of at the time and for another 15 plus years onward. The bravery, the amount of principle and self respect, the sheer immovable morality of this man to say this at the time was a level of bravery that bordered on stupidity. At this time Clinton was president, and he, with MASSIVE support, enacted "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" meaning nobody could ask and nobody could announce anything relating to sexuality in the United States military. There was a literal legal gag order on coming out in the military. Admitting to being gay in the military was grounds for dishonorable discharge, which is essentially as bad as a felony conviction on your record. This man truly had morals that today politicians have to pretend to have always had, when not 10 years ago they were openly opposing homosexuality, gay marriage and the banning of Don't Ask Don't Tell. You young kids really can't grasp just how opposite the views on gay people were, and while gay people are almost the bare minimum normal now and we talk about trans and non binary and gender fluid and all manner of gender and sexuality deviation so prominently and fervently now, these words simply didn't exist in any meaningful capacity at the time. Transgender was seen as cross dresser at worst and "trans sexual" at best. It was not a topic whatsoever. I don't know if your generation is lucky or cursed, but know that mine and those right before me lived through an entirely opposite America with 180 degree fully opposite culture and morals.
