Sand Review: A Heartworming Game

Ойындар

Devir Games released Sand, a board game all about delivering plants on a worm, earlier this year. Jarom has spent a good deal of time with it over the last weeks, and he’s ready to gab.

The theme is what grabbed me here, thanks for getting into the gnitty gritty of this game. I've heard that the game time is pretty abrasive, and that's what has kept me away from this. How did you find your play time with Sand with 3 or 4 people? Be don't be DaRUDE (Sandstorm) with your reply. Hope my puns wormed into your brain. Ok bye.

Unbridled puns will always received a worm welcome around these parts. Sand's theme is the crucial part of the game for me, as well-- the worm rider dynamic is a lot of fun! With 3-4 people, the length comes in between 2.5-3 hours, usually, though I have had a game go past 3.5 (that was with 4 players, 1 of whom is a particularly thoughtful fellow 😝). Mapping out efficient routes is critical to gleaning success from the game, and folks tend to spend a LOT of time thinking out turns as a result. My personal favorite experience is with 2, but I enjoy playing with 3, as well-- it can get wonderfully vicious 😈 (songs get more important/more contested with more players).

I remember Twitter...before X happened. Do you recommend Sand for casual board gamers?

Not particularly: I didn't find this one nearly as approachable as titles like Splendor or Azul, and the rulebook isn't as well organized as what you'd find in something like Wingspan. It'd be one to jump on if you've tried those games, you like what they offer, and you're looking to wade a bit deeper into the board game pool-- as long as the theme appeals to you! The theming here made all the difference for me.

I can't tell if I'll like this one. 🤔 The reviews seem to be so mixed.

I've played this at a convention, the rulebook is the worst that I have ever had the misfortune to read, it really is THAT bad. If you manage to get past that initial hurdle, then it's an average pick up and deliver euro.
