This looks like the kind of game my 10 year old self would play ad nauseam. People forget that not every game has to be an existential experience, with cryptic stories, complex progression systems, gray morals, full of cynicism and a bleak worldview. Outside of Nintendo, few games seem to be just simple and fun without looking down on the audience so that even children are enchanted by them. It's this type of game that makes young people fall in love with the medium and creates gamers.

Lots of indie games are like that. It's true that AA and above games aren't really, though. Not sure if I'd call this an A game or a AA one.

My preference is moving towards simpler systems. I'm tired of complex controls, which I need to spend time memorising and besting. Also the gritty modern "emotional" stories. Looking forwards to giving this game a shot.

Look you got games like wonderful 101 tho with sick action gameplay and depth and somewhat intricate controls but also has a baby mode for people who don't like having too much control and find it daunting, but isn't dark or brooding or edgy. It's colorful and fun. If I play a game I wish I had more control of I'm almost always done but that isn't a problem and it's super uplifting in tone

Sounds like it’s 14-16 hours on those days working. He doesn’t write scripts, he just writes bullet points and happens to be good at expanding and explaining those points on the fly while not having verbal tics like “um” or pauses (itself an impressive skill). He has nobody else working for him, like say doing video editing, everything is 100% him. Impressive AF work ethic. And gaming stamina, I must say 😆 honestly, I can’t go for more than a few hours gaming before I’m done with it for the day.

I can pretty much agree with everything you've said. Before buying it, I did expect to see different types of dungeons, and while the dungeons were pretty similar, I still thought they were fun to go through. I still wished there would've been more like that dungeon you go through while travelling to Forest Land (without spoiling too much). The game is simple and fun, and sometimes that's all you need. Especially since the game I've played previous to this one was Icewind Dale, it was a nice change of pace. Also while the price for the game definitely is kinda steep, it unfortunately isn't surprising for a Bandai Namco game. I didn't feel robbed after finishing the game because I had a great time with it. But just like Mortismal, if you are kinda short on money, wait for a sale.

Making an empty world without it being empty is really hard to tackle without P-Gen tech, or making the gameplay too redundant. I'm currently trying to tackle this problem. This is an incredibly cozy game, honestly. Its open world activities may be fairly boilerplate, but the game is gorgeous and filled with charm and personality, and the vehicle feel is fantastic. Really feels like a successor to an obscure old PS2 game I loved, Steambot Chronicles. You could say it's really just a vehicle customization... sandbox.

Great review, I was looking forward to this coverage. Question for anyone: Can the damage number rendering be disabled? Keep the bar, but no number gnats?

I love playing games, and I'm not nearly in as much of a rush as people seem to think. I spent over a week on this with about 40 hours played, if I was rushing it would have been done sooner. I seem to just generally play faster than most people (probably because of the volume of games I play and the accumulated experience) in combination with nothing but time to do so. It's pretty rare that Im genuinely in a rush.

@@MortismalGaming That all makes sense! I love CRPGs but I am notoriously slow to finish them, even when I'm putting in effort to finish lol. Maybe it's just me, but modern JRPGs, with a few exceptions, all seem very samey to me. They've mostly all become button mashy action games, with lots of similar systems, cooking, similar dialog and sound effects, most of them are very heavy on particle effects that all end up looking and feeling much the same. Tales of, Ys, the SAO games, this game, even FF16 started to feel that way to me. It wasn't always the case, but these days I much prefer western RPGs

Enjoying the game so far. It feels very easy to pick up and make decent progress in 30 minutes or an hour unlike some others games ive played recently. Love the visuals even the hand to hand combat, which is very mediocre, looks great. I was fighting against an enemy that shot missles at me so I equipped something that automatically shot the missles, and it was so much fun driving through all that chaos. I do wish the platforming was a little tighter. I feel like I often miss grabbing ledges or the jump heights are randomly different or it will go straight into the animation for the double jump without the first jump. Also it has some weird stealth and 2.5d areas that dont really add anything to the game.
