Sand Casting for Jewellers
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Sand casting is basically a relatively simple way to start casting without the need for expensive equipment that’s usually required for casting on a larger scale. It’s a great way to cast simple and even not so simple forms for one off pieces or small scale production. It’s not a replacement for traditional casting, and if you’re wanting to create multiples of identical pieces on a cost effective basis, I’d still be sending that out to an external casting company. But, for creative folks looking to cast found objects, or wax carvings for one off pieces, it’s certainly a fabulous (and fun) option.
As always, please ensure you’re working safely and working in a well ventilated area! Safety glasses and closed toe shoes are a must for this, together with suitable clothing and a preferably a shop apron too to protect from any splashes. I recommend working on a tray with a rim around the edges to ensure nothing accidentally rolls off the work surface and onto your foot!

so neat and clear cast
Amazing! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for sharing Lucy. Thanks Craig. I got a few useful tips from this. You are right about the vent holes, they only have to be tiny and it saves an awful lot of cleaning up afterwards. Also, although I thought the crucible holder / hinged pour device was a pretty cool looking piece of kit, I thought it got in the way a bit here and limited being able to swirl the molten metal properly. It could have some great uses though, so not knocking it at all. All the best.
Thanks, Lucy & Craig!
Thank you, I have picked up a new tip.
Actually, the excess metal came off really quickly. Great.
How did you attach it to wood?
Are there any tips for if you followed all these steps and continue to get an incomplete casting? Only a 1/4 of the ring gets filled and then get a big button. Thanks!

That is generally a venting issue where the vents are obstructed, the ring is too thin or the metal not molten all the way through when you pour it
Where to get the canister that holds the sand?

You throw away any burnt sand.
