"San" - Tuba Skinny

One of my favorite instrumentals by the band, first recorded in 1921. Performed by Tuba Skinny 100 years later at the d.b.a. in New Orleans on July 2, 2021.

    Many thanks for recording this for us, James. As you have said in a comment, 'San' was composed in 1920 by Walter Michels and Lindsay McPhail. For anyone interested in looking under the bonnet of this performance: 00:13 INTRODUCTION - four bars from the rhythm section, establishing the key of F minor 00:18 VERSE - led by Shaye, the band plays the F minor 24-bar verse 00:45 CHORUS - ensemble, 32 bars in the related key of A flat - note the chord of E7 in bars 2, 4 and elsewhere - giving this tune its distinctive flavour 01:20 Shaye's hand on the head to signal a return to the Verse 01:21 VERSE - the 24 bars in F minor again 01:49 CHORUS - Craig takes a solo over the full 32 bars in A flat, including a clever Middle Eight, involving the rhythm section on stop chords 02:19 Shaye's signals set up the next chorus 02:23 CHORUS - Barnabus and Shaye trade fours over the first sixteen bars; Barnabus takes the Middle Eight (just as Craig did - against stop chords) 02:59 CHORUS - ensemble 03:35 CHORUS - Jason takes a solo over the full 32 bars 04:10 CHORUS - Robin takes a full 32-bar solo, against neatly-executed stop chords 04:45 CHORUS - a lusty full ensemble final chorus, with free improvisation; Shaye turns the final bar into a Coda, adding a further two bars.

    I've been following you for about ten years, ever since I listened to "Make me a pallet on your floor" and Meschiya Lake and Alynda Lee Segarra sang. Now I can no longer do without it. Jazz is like a disease, and - fortunately - there are no medicines to cure it. I would like to suggest that you include in your repertoire "Mis'ry and the blues" made famous by Jack Teagarden.

    This piece was recorded January 12, 1928, by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, with Bix Beiderbecke playing lead cornet. I mention this because Tuba Skinny, although they play several hundred different tunes from the Twenties and Thirties, does not perform many pieces associated with Bix. I've always wondered why.

  • @JamesSterling

    @JamesSterling

    It was written in 1920 by Lindsay McPhail and Walter Michel and first recorded in 1921 by the Benson Orchestra of Chicago. Recorded by many since then.

    I didn't mean to say it was first recorded by the Whiteman group, James, just that that's when Bix recorded it. Since Tuba Skinny has recorded several hundred tunes, it has intrigued me that they play so few pieces associated with Bix. One that they have performed is At the Jazz Band Ball.

    @@JamesSterling my best guess is that TS avoids warhorses and shopworn hits, and tunes associated with Bix include many like that. Plus, they seem drawn to old classics that are complex and tricky to play, which is not true of many tunes associated with Bix.

    Most of the Andy Schumm led bands play Chicago style of both Bix and Freddie Keppard. Don't know if the current edition of TS could pull off the best Bix songs...maybe when Ewan Bleach and Craig were playing together in the band. You need both a really good clarinet and sax. The Trumbauer Orchestra has Eddie Lang on guitar and Dorsey on clarinet...legends.

    I wondered the same thing, they ever played a bix memorial gig and not a single number on the set was a tune bix played. No doubt Shaye listened to bix a fair share, him being perhaps the most iconic corner player in the 20s other than Satchmo himself.

    Very nice. In Nov. 1936, the western swing band the Blue Ridge Playboys with Leon Selph on fiddle and vocal and Floyd Tillman on electric guitar recorded a version of this tune with lyrics under the title Gimme My Dime Back which still circulates in various circles

    Thanks for that. Back in the day many tunes were "borrowed" or recycled by bands in different genres. I did not know about the version you mentioned. Floyd Tillman became a great singer/songwriter later in his career.

    I've counted about seven different ways Shaye marks time with her feet, including one technique I've not seen used by any other performer. She'll also do it with other body parts. She's sometimes called "the human metronome," and the tag fits better than most such comments do. I think she is compelled to mark time through every tune. When she doesn't show she's doing it, she is still marking time, and soon an arm or finger or foot will move to reflect what is going on inside.
