San Rafael Swell Devil's Racetrack - More Technical than I Wanted
This was supposed to be the shortcut. On the map it was the shortest distance to the highway. This morning's trip was supposed to go fast so we could get on the road back across the country. It didn't end up that way. The trail was slow, and technical. Much more technical than I wanted. In fact, had I known what it was going to entail, I wouldn't have gone down this way. There was one spot - let's just say, I puckered... a lot.

There is a scene where we're walking up one of the arches and you can hear me fart quite loudly.... lol
Good music and great adventures can't ask for more. Thanks Jason for taking us along.
Back in 2017, we ran 5 fullsize trucks (an 2002 Dodge Cummins, 2005 Dodge Cummins w/popup camper, 2016 RAM Power Wagon, 1991 K5 Blazer and my 1978 K10 w/popup camper) over the Devil's Racetrack, although we ran it the opposite direction. Then we took Eva Conover trail out back to I-70 the next day and deeper into the swell South of I-70 for the rest of the week. The Devil's Racetrack definitely keeps your attention for sure. The spot where you whacked the rear bumper is much more challenging to crawl up. There weren't any tree stumps stacked up at that time but there was a baby cow sleeping under a tree right there that kept a watchful eye over all of us as we crawled by lol. A couple of the trucks needed a winch tug up that wall. Fun trail!

Interesting... I was just thinking perhaps it would be easier going the opposite direction. Honestly, if I hadn't been rusty, in a new truck and had a spotter, I likely could have managed that decent in a much more controlled fashion, like I prefer to do... nice and slow... but when I started to tip to the driver, I panicked and let go of the braking to let gravity pull me down, rolling on the tires, not on the axis. Obviously the result was a dramatic bang on the bar work.

@@SwellRunner Lol, the other direction always seems easier. Meh, that's what the AEV protection is for! At least you have an earned scar and not parking lot rash!
Can't get enough of your editing. From all the folks that do these videos I have to say that you do it best.. my opinion only of course haha

Dude, I appreciate that so much. It's quite a bit of work doing this editing... and as a hobby/side hustle, the work is partially for the enjoyment of folks like yourself. I have a good time doing it as well, of course. But I appreciate the compliment. It means a lot.
Hey man, cool video your kids will remember that forever! we live not too far from there just over the border in Colorado and we are always in the high desert and in the mountains, camping and riding four wheelers. I love the truck. That is my dream truck. Congrats on the purchase. 👍🏼
Cool truck, cool trail, great editing, awesome video.
That is a great trail. I took 10 rigs through there last summer, had a blast.
Great job Jason and fam. Hope you continue to make videos. It was awesome to get to talk to you at overland expo west at the aev area.

I want to. I really enjoy doing it. But it's not a priority ahead of other things going on - so it just depends on if I have the time...
Great video Jason! I’ll be in this area this weekend. Might skip this trail due to no armor yet (missing my factory front). I lost it at the camera flip! 😂 Too funny!!
Hey you did a great job for a newbie, every time you come home not needing repairs is a good day 👍🏻and there’s no better way to get better then just do it and learn from your mistakes and hope there not to bad.

Nice video, it looks like you have a lift on your Ram with 18 inch rims. The lifts I've checked out for mine require 20 inch rims what lift do you have? 👍 Thanks in advance.
Man I need to get back out West and enjoy this!

It was spicy. We made it a ways in and camped at a pretty cool spot. Had the goal of making it up to the wedge the next day and realized that wasn’t going to happen given our rate of travel. We thankfully turned around and went back up the east side to the wedge and had a great rest of the trip :)
Hi Jason that was fun. No contradiction at all...understood exactly what you meant by that. I also learned something today...not to take that trail with my powerwagon (on 35's), with the trailer 😜.
@SwellRunner

haha. Right on. I'd bet if I had Kevin with me to spot (he's quite the expert), that one tough spot would have been much better. I'd do it again. And probably going up, vs down would be easier as well.

kzread.info/dash/bejne/l62fz9qcp92feps.html - ahh seems like yesterday. Power Wagon no issue. With trailer too, no. I is not a real rewarding trail IMHO and after being on it twice. Junipers get tight with a FWC in the bed too as I remember. Regardless, if you're going to due trails like this in the So. Ut area, I'd have some sliders and rear corner protection on a PW regardless of tire size, and be prepared to wack your front radius arms. Just make them planned as much as possible.
What tire pressure do you run while off road in the AEV? Its a heavy truck. How are those Cooper tires do off road?
Kool family time 👍
Just think back how far you have come (literally) since that little kiss on the rear corner in the 4runner back here in Georgia all those years ago... Maybe that should be on your calendar- to redo some of those first trips in the AEV? Having a Power Wagon myself, it's very interesting to see some of the bigger rigs handling obstacles, especially in the east where trails don't always have those epic views and are a bit tighter.

I'd really like to.. been thinking of hitting it in December.
We ran it in a SxS and it wasn’t too bad. But with such a big vehicle, I could see it being a bit much in certain spots.
@SwellRunner
Жыл бұрын
SxS's are almost cheating! haha. They're so much fun. I'd like to do some serious trails in one that's running some large tires and has a lot of flex some day. Would be fun to walk over things that are otherwise super tricky.
Actually pretty cool kids, very rare on KZread.
great video. love the truck. but drop the music. the Cummins makes it's own music
Hey Jason, did you have the sway bar disconnected? It didn't seem to have as much flex as I have. Might of just been camera angle.
@SwellRunner
Жыл бұрын
No. It’s on and connected. I didn’t have a rear sway bar on my white truck. Definitely not as much flex on the new one.

i have a question about your Aev’s suspensions. What are the chances to lower them so it sits lower near the fenders?
@SwellRunner
5 ай бұрын
Do you mean lower as in a lower ride height? Or like with airbags or something? Crazy enough - the suspension lift is only 3 inches. The rest of the ground clearance comes from the larger tires. The fender cut to accommodate larger fenders allow the 40’s to clear.
@qiqi7226

@@SwellRunner i am located in Canada where there is no AEV distributor in my area. I am thinking of ordering the xl parts with highmark fender flares, but to go with 37 tires as it’s easier to find more tire options, but I wish it could sit a bit lower. As I think the stance looks better. lol
What air pressure were you running and what air pressure do you usually run off road?
