San Martin Go Titanium!

In this video I review two brand new releases by San Martin. The incredible Titanium SN0111 and the all new SN0113. These watches are beautifully built and are hopefully going to be available discounted in the upcoming AliExpress Sale.
Here are the affiliate links to the watches featured in this video.

They haven't come back to me yet on the reasons why some for the watch is grade 2 and some grade 5 titanium. As soon as they do I will update this video description.

WHY I OFTEN DON'T MENTION OTHER BRANDS IN MY VIDEOS.
You may have noticed that I often don't mention the original brands that watches I am reviewing pay homage to. This is very intentional and not meant to offend you or the original brands. I lost my first channel in October 2020 which I had spent 9 months growing and invested a significant amount of money in simply because I had mentioned the original brands in some of my videos. There are people who try to use KZreads lack of understanding when it comes to the difference between homage watches and fake watches to attack other channels and their owners and sadly I fell foul of this in 2020. This channel was also attacked recently and KZread deleted content simply because I had said 'subby homage' and 'Rolex homage' in two videos despite the watches in the videos being perfectly legal homage watches. Please understand that I can not afford to risk my channel so I will no longer be mentioning other brands when reviewing homage watches.

I forgot about this watch, but according to their website, 5% of the case is made of steel for "sturdyness" I'd assume that's why the bezel action is good.

Both grade 5 and grade 2 are alloys of Ti. However Grade 5 has more other metals added, these have different atom size and disrupt slip plane movement (atoms sliding over each other). So Grade 5 has twice the Young's modulus (strength) but harder to work on (expensive to machine). I suspect Grade 2 was used when costs became too high for a piece that didn't need the extra strength. Steel would have been used for the internals of the clasp springs due to steel being more elastic and way cheaper to put in than try to source/tool up for these tiny parts. Omega produce 100% full grade 5 watches, for a cost. Titanium is great for anyone with allergies/sensitive skin, the sacrificial oxide layer is very inert and almost instant in creation when scratched. You are never actually touching Titanium, but it's oxide. Titanium has been used for medical implants for years. Love it and probably get one.

Young's modulus is not strength (the modulus is akin to the stiffness of the material not the stress which causes failure). In general the modulus of Ti is around 16 million psi. The extra strength that the grade 5 Ti gives a watch is likely not a major benefit for a watch in my opinion. Ti is likely used because of it's outstanding corrosion resistance and the Grade 2 actually has better corrosion resistance (but not by a whole lot) and Ti alloys are very light. Indeed Ti alloys are harder to machine vs steel. That's one of the tradeoffs for sure.

I think possibly the reason for grade 5 and grade 2 with the case back is to prevent the case back from fusing to the case , I have a SD 43 and a Deepsea and both use titanium case back for that reason

As an avid San Martin fan, I'm hoping they extend Titanium versions to some of their other dive watches, particularly the SN004. I just purchased an Octopus Oct-10 (Pelagos homage)in Titanium (my 1st), and I love the lightness of it on my wrist. At the same time I purchased a San Martin SN0121, and as much as i truly love it, and despite the excellent on-the-fly adjustable clasp, which I also love, I find myself slapping the Octo on my wrist more times than not. So, come on San Martin, GET BUSY! Thanks for the great review, Gary.

Vanadium is a component of "restaurant" grade stainless steal. It often replaces chromium in the alloy, although saucepans usually have some chromium and increased nickel content to be more resistant to acidic foods. Vanadium steel is also tougher and more wear resistant than chromium steel. Vanadium is often a component of the better quality stainless steel kitchen knives. Vanadium stabilizes the beta form of titanium and increases its strength and temperature stability. Grade 5 is probably more appropriate for high speed tools or surgical items, but it's nice to know that San Martin went for a 'better" grade of titanium rather than a purer form which would likely be more prone to scratches nd scuffs. Usually stainless is 90% steel 5% nickel and 5% vanadium or chromium.

I like Titanium watches but am not a fan of the PT5000. If you choose the Sellita movement then you are in the same price bracket as the Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT Titan premium Ceramic with an SW330-2 movement and its a Swiss watch. OK the Steinhart is not a Rolex Submariner "homage" but is a great watch. I am not knocking San Martin, I have 2 and they are excellent value and real quality for the price. It will be interesting to see if they offer the NH35 movement at some point to bring down the price. My San Martin SN 0008 with NH 35 is accurate to less than 2 seconds a day.

They use grade 2 for the caseback because grade 5 would be too hard to machine the coin edge into the case back. And since they wanted to make the watch head and bracelet as resistant as possible they choose grade 5 for those. Problem with grade 5 is that it looks very dull and plain, you won't really get it to shine well that's why Tudor uses Grade 2 even for the case. But SM found a workaround to the dullness of grade 5 by electroplating it with a shiney metal.

I've seen a girl saw through a titanium tube once to make a ring. It was about 20mm in diameter and had a wall thickness of about 0.8mm. It took her 2.5 hours and eighteen saw blades. None of them broke, they just wore out.

I wont buy anymore those great watches unless they understand the huge mistake they make with their clasps. I have an old one with oyster like clasp, barcelet tapered down to 15mm as rolex does. Their new style bracelets kill the overall aspect of the watch on your wrist and looks ugly. Thats just too nad they dont get this

Regarding scratches, I think there is a lot of misinformation regarding how steel and titanium compare. Nearly every site I found when I searched "is titanium more scratch resistant than steel" said that it isn't and that titanium is more prone to scratching. Perhaps that is why many companies are treating their titanium watch models with coatings to help prevent scratching. Here's the verbiage from just one site, but they all seem to be in agreement. "We’ll go through the characteristics of each alloy one by one in the sections below. However, on average, titanium has similar strength properties to stainless steel but weighs about 40% less, is non-magnetic, and is more heat-resistant. Its cold working expenses are significantly greater than those of stainless steel, and is also more prone to scratches." According to what I've learned it is that cold working that causes titanium to add to the cost, well above stainless steel even in very similar models. Titanium lessens the life of saws, drills and other mechanical devices and that cost needs to be recouped somehow, hence you pay more for titanium watches. Source: Instagram

You're not scratching the Titanium, you're actually scratching the oxide it exudes, and that's easily fixable. Lot of misinformation out there.
