The last time I fished San Luis Reservoir was back in April. It’s like fishing a new lake every time so it took awhile to figure it out.
I didn’t launch till noon-ish today and it was dead calm. With the water level dropping by about a foot a day, I wasn’t sure how the fish would react. The weather has been fairly stable recently so I wasn’t expecting the bite to shut down.
Trolling the Tackle Builders Atlas rigs near Lone oak and Basalt areas I found stripers swarming near the bottom. You can catch 20+ fish easily here trolling the Atlas rigs 5’ above the bottom in 40-60’ of water but you’ll have to cull through several fish for a keeper. It’s literally dink city in these areas.
I tried the flats in 70-80’ of water on the west side of the lake and cottonwood area and found several stripers hugging the bottom. The quality is a lot better with several spitting out grass shrimp. So they’re definitely feeding on the bottom.
I finished the day with 20+ striper to 25”. All caught using the Atlas Rigs. I got there late in the day so focused on deep water. I’m sure you’ll catch them shallower if you hit the lake early.
