Einblick in das umfangreiche O-Busnetz der kalifornischen Stadt San Francisco, welches zum Besuchszeitpunkt nahezu komplett von Škoda 14TrSF bedient wurde, welche in den Jahren 2001-2004 im Umfang von 240 Fahrzeugen beschafft wurden und demnächst durch Neufahrzeuge ersetzt werden. Es waren ebenfalls noch 33 15TrSF vorhanden, welche allerdings bereits abgestellt sind. Der O-Bus kann auf den topografisch anspruchsvollen Strecken seinen Vorteil gänzlich ausfahren!

trolleybuses are so cool. i can see why SF would want to make use of electric buses, given the amount of insanely steep grades there are in the city and the massive amount of torque that can be extracted from the use of electric powerplants for heavy vehicles that need to regularly climb those slopes.
Excellent video. The Škoda trolleys in SF are fascinating, indeed. Love the sound as well.

I assume that the video exaggerates the sound of the vehicle. It seems quite loud, though a fume-producing diesel bus pushing up those hills would be very loud!

@@Bobrogers99 Škoda 14TrSF trolleybuses do not have diesel engines for propulsion. They actually have batteries because they have autonomy. See at 17:02 and 17:23 with inventory numbers 5508, 5637 and 5555

Great video, thank you. That distinctive hum brings back so many memories of my days riding on those. You have to give the drivers a lot of credit since some of the streets and routes can be challenging, but they do their jobs well.

@@stanibg75 Ikarus hlavně už není, respektive něco z něj možná zbylo, ale jinak zkrachoval. Navíc dnes sice už tyto slavné trolejbusy v SF nenajdete, ale škodováckou techniku ano. Škodovácké elektrické motory totiž užívají nové trojelbusy New Flyer, co jezdí v San Franciscu od roku 2019.
Great video. Škoda 14 and 15 Tr are the best trolleybuses.

Thanks! Yes, i love 14Tr and after a lot of visits in eastern 14Tr-cities i must come to SF! :) ...but now 14TrSF go out of service there...only the last vehicles ar at travel next weeks.

Actually all Skoda buses in SF are retired latest since 2019. The new ones are from a Canadian company.

Auf jeden Fall auch wieder ein ganz tolles Video von dir !! Es ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes schon krass, welche Steigungen die Skodas hier bewältigen.....vor allem das "Über-den-Berg-kommen" sieht toll aus ! Aber auch die Geschichte mit dem Hublift ist genial gelöst - ob hierzulande auch jemand auf solche Einfälle gekommen wäre ?? Ebenso sind die Fahrradträger eine coole Sache - hierzulande gibt es ja mancherorts Anhänger dafür (aber nur im Regionalverkehr so weit ich weiß).

Vielen Dank auch hier an Dich! :-) Freut mich, wenn auch dieses Video gefallen hat! Für die Škoda-Wägelchen sind diese Steigungen schon die größten, dies es wohl gibt. Vergleichsweise bleibt meiner Meinung nach nurnoch der kurze Abschnitt in Teplice nach der Haltestelle Bilá cesta in Richtung Nová Ves...aber das ist nicht der Rede wert, bzw wert gewesen (die Wagen fahren dort ja nichtmehr). Ja, über den Hublift freute ich mich auch, ihn sogar in Aktion zu sehen. Barrierefreiheit ist somit gegeben und das schon seit Jahren, allerdings besteht dort auch schon die Pflicht, sodass sich dort jemand schon Gedanken machen musste. Die Fahrradträger sind bei den Steigungen tlw. schon recht nützlich...auch wenns den Fotografen doch schon stark stört, aber es gehört nunmal in SF dazu! :-)

@@KT4Dani Ja die Steigungen in SF sind schon ordendlich. Da kommt den Obussen das hohe Anfangsdrehmoment der E-Motoren zugute. Haben die TR14 dort eigentlich schon eine Rekuperationsbremse? Die würde sich ja bei den Steigungen absolut bezahlt machen und für längere Standzeiten der Radbremsen sorgen. Niederflur würde wohl bei den spitzen Winkeln an den Steigungswechseln nicht funktionieren - selbst die Hochflurbusse sitzen da ja schon fast auf! Auch sehr interessant die Spitzkehre, wo für die Busse eine extra Spur zum weit ausholen gebaut wurde. Die dortigen TR14 dürften auch die einzigen weltweit mit extra Akku für kürzere Oberleitungsfreie Streckenabschnitte sein. Deshalb wohl die großen Aufbauten am Dach hinten.

@@maikerlein76 Die reinen Trolley haben das nicht ( noch nicht). Skoda hat in Prag allerdings auch Modelle mit dynamisch an der Oberleitung aufgeladenen Batterien und fährt mit dem Trolleybus auch ohne Oberleitung überland

What will you say? This trolleybusses are from years 2000 and normal in each europe! Look in your france cities Paris, grenoble etc. with older trams in service...its funny! -> hy to france 1980! :-D

Go and visit France, KT4Dani. French trams are from 1990's onwards. The oldest are Nantes (1985) and St Etienne (1987), but running newer trains.

20:13: request stop, just pull the string as the lady on the right...interesting indeed. We have to stand up and press button on handrail next to door . (I already missed several stops because of that.)

Dresden hatte früher auch Oberleitungsbusse gehabt, die fuhren über den Zellschen Weg Richtung Blaues Wunder. Die wurden aber im Gegensatz zu San Francisco bei Zeiten abgeschafft. Sehr interessante Aufnahmen. Weiter so...

Ja, die frühere O-Busstrecke in Dresden habe ich vor 3,5 Jahren einmal abgefahren. Gerade die grundstraße würde sich ja heute wieder perfekt dafür anbieten.

@@KT4Dani Da gibt es schon Überlegungen für Duo-Busse, die auch längere Strecken nur mit Akku fahren können. Grad läuftauch ein neuer Test mit Solaris Bussen an, die hoffentlich besser funktionieren, wie die erste Serie. Die fuhr ja nur knapp 1 Jahr und dann sah man keinen mehr unter den Ladestellen an der EH Mickten und in Gruna vor dem Depot. Die neuen sollen teils Diesel-Akku Duobusse sein (also mehr Reichweite nur mit Akku, als die ersten Hybridbusse von Solaris und MAN) und auch O-Busse mit automatisch absenkbaren Stromabnehmern, die dann auch auf der alten Obus-Strecke nach Bühlau fahren. Dort soll es dann nur hochzu eine OL geben; runterzu laden sie beim Bremsen ihre Akkus wieder auf. Genauso an den EH.

That's pretty interresting, I did not know this version of this trolleybus even existed, letalone that it was made for US cities. Though with all respect to those who worked on this trolleybus, it's just really strange to me - It somehow manages to look both more and less modern than the original Škoda 14tr. Like what's up with with the wooden walls of the trolleybus and the seats ? - It look's like something from the 70's. Also why are they using steel cables to singal for a stop ? This was filmed in like 2016 - now, I know that USA's public transportation is criminally underfunded, but like cmon, it's button and few wires, it doesn't cost that much ! I think that here ( Czech Republic ) we had buttons to signal stops in Škoda 14tr in the 90's, infact, the Škoda 14tr running here in our cities nowdays look more modern, than those in SF. It looks like the SF škodas were never refited. Even more confusing is, that they chose to base a new troleybus out of Škoda 14tr, instead of the new Škoda 21tr, which was already five years in production when they started to manufacture these Škoda 14trSF, and was a better trolleybus - completly low floor, faster, more powerfull and probably more energy efficient. What was going on ? :D

The steel cable is a very nice idea, somehow oldschool but very efficient. The SF Skoda are from an joint venture with EMI and Skoda that was defunct since 2004. So these busses in the vIdeo are minimum 12 years old. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Transit,_Inc.

I wonder how many gallons of diesel these trolley buses save. I've heard diesel city buses average about 4-6 mpg. I would guess for a city like S.F. these trolley buses would save millions of gallons per year.

Thats the Market Street, which crosses there to the Clayton Street. A very interesting point to look for trolleybusses. :-)
I rode trolley's when a I was kid in the 50s in the UK but they were quiet compared to the buses.

Yes, GB was absolutely crazy with this destruction of electric public transport. In France the same. But the Germans, Czechs, Austrians, or Swiss, etc. have retained these systems (trolleybuses or trams) so now they don't need to spend many billions to build some "green public transport".
Czech cities have already replaced these with newer models. I miss their sound, though.
But in the description it does mention the 15trSF

Note you might know or might not know that there was a 15trSF in service between 2002 to 2016 none were preserved. They were articulated like the 15tr and 15trM but looked like a 14trSF. There is also another city that ordered Śkodas in America. You might know and again you might not but it was Dayton With the 14trE and 14trE2 they were retired by I think 2019 also might be wrong. But 14trSF number 5538 is preserved as well as a 14trE2.There might be a 14trE left but thats it

Tolle Videos! Die Geräusche der Skodas beim anfahren und bremsen sind einfach toll. Fahren die neuen O-Busse eigentlich inzwischen auch auf anderen Linien außer der 14? Die haben ja wohl ein ziemliches Problem mit den Steigungen.

Danke! Ja, also die neuen Gelenkwagen sah ich auch auf der 30! Ansonsten soll die 49 ja damit betrieben werden, welche beim derzeitigen BRT-Umbau aber mit Dieselbussen betrieben wird. Nun, Probleme mit den Steigungen werden die neuen wohl nicht wirklich haben, vielmehr ist deren Einsatz aber auf den langen Strecken vorgesehen und nicht auf den zentralen Hügelstrecken! :-)

It is actually based on Škoda trolleybus, only the front and rear face is taken from the Neoplan.

Da bekommt der 14TrSF noch ein klaps auf den Hintern, und dann fährt er ab :-) Interessant und Abwechslungsreiches Video. Der markante Sound dieser Fahrzeuge ist wirklich krass. Typische USA-Eigenart auch der Menschliche STOP-Schild-Halter :-) Grüße

Wow! I'm guessing that a battery charges when the trolley is up to run the electric motor. I meant if the trolley comes off the wire accidentally.

yes, this US-Version have a powerpack for some kilometers without electric wires.
In Dresden Trachau kann man sich alte Straßenbahnen anschauen am Straßenbahnhof. Leider haben die da nicht so oft geöffnet. Jens

No, they replaced by new lowfloorvehicles last years. 😥 As i know, one exist as historic vehicle...but all other scrapped.

@@KT4Dani That's unfortunate. I only get to SF every so often, but it was fun to ride them. I've never been on a bus that was dead silent or had no vibration at a full stop. It was really interesting.

Sind Obus und Tram an einer Oberleitung ... ( also Tram halt nur an einem Kabel ;-) ) ???

Nein. Wenns genau hinsiehst, dann erkennst, das die Obus-OL seitlich extra führt neben der OL für die Tram. Auch an den Weichen und Kreuzungen sieht man das sehr gut. Würde bei dem engen Abstand der Obus-Drähte und den unterschiedlichen Stromabnehmern Obus - Tram auch nicht funktionieren. Da würde der Bügelschleifer der Tram immer den zweiten Draht vom Obus mit abgreifen. Der müsste dann mind. 20-30cm höher liegen, um einen Fehlkontakt zu vermeiden. Auch würden die Aufhängungen der OL komplzierter werden, da es beim Obus mehr Platz zu den Isolatoren-Klemmstücken braucht, als bei der Tram. Deshalb war es auch in Riga ein Problem, die neuen Skoda Cityrunner Niederflurtrams mit Scheifer-Stromabnehmer einzuführen, da die ja bis zuletzt das ganze Netz noch nit Stange an den TATRAS gefahren sind. Die NF kommen deshalb dort nur auf modernisierten Streckenabschnitten mit neuer OL zum Einsatz. Stück für Stück sollen die TATRAS gegen NF ausgetauscht werden. Eine Umrüstung dieser auf Halbscheren wäre wohl zu teuer bei der hohen Laufleistung. Die letzte Reko war um 2005 mit Optik und Innenraum.

@@maikerlein76 Aber machbar wäre es dort, da die Tram ja mit Stange fährt. Aber ich sah auf einem anderen Video mal Ausschnitte, bei denen es danach aussieht. Und schau mal bei 25:58. Dort sehe ich Gleise, aber nur die Oberleitungen vom Obus.... daher meine Frage.
Сама коробка как и у наших крымских тр 14, движки судя по звуку-тоже) Остальное отличается. Видимо машинокомплектами поставляли, а на месте собирали на свой вкус и цвет

А что если закупить подержанные 188 троллейбусов и распределить по городам: Рязань, Вологда, Воронеж, Брянск, Кострома, Иваново и т.д.
Why doesn't the city buy new trolleys those are antiques, i mean, how do they even move?

You know, that this movie are from 2016? Some months later, the complete fleet were changed to new lowfloor-trolleybusses.

I inform me before about San Jose, but its not so interesting for me to spend holidays there :-) ...the reason for my travel was only the 14TrSF :-)
