San Francisco - Scott McKenzie

"San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" is a song, written by John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, and sung by Scott McKenzie. It was written and released in June 1967 to promote the Monterey Pop Festival.
McKenzie's song became an instant hit. The lyrics tell the listeners, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair". Due to the difference between the lyrics and the actual title, the title is often quoted as "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)". "San Francisco" reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and was number one in the United Kingdom and most of Europe. The single is purported to have sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The song is credited with bringing thousands of young people to San Francisco, California during the late 1960s.[citation needed]
In Central Europe, young people adopted "San Francisco" as an anthem for freedom, and it was widely played during Czechoslovakia's 1968 Prague Spring uprising against Soviet rule.[citation needed]
The song has been featured in several films, including Frantic, The Rock and Forrest Gump (Wikipedia).

Scott died on Saturday August 18th 2012 in Los Angeles. It was a warm beautiful day. I was at a beach bar drinking and enjoying life with friends. All of a sudden a girl came in and as she sat down with her friends at the table next to us I heard her say "hey everyone did you hear Scott Mckenzie died today?" I was stunned. In an instant I was back at UC Berkeley and off to his concert. All those memories. I just sat there alone with my thoughts and cried.

I was born in 1982,I discovered how beautiful were those years just listening the people that lived those times, listening to the music of those years (one of the best music of ever for me) and watching movies like "Forrest Gump". In the 2022 I still listen to the music of 70's,80's,90's. I'm sick of nostalgia 😔. Maybe it's cause today music is meaningless.

Same. I'm 30 (born in 1992). The song takes me to an idealized era that is impossimple to reach again. When We left El Paso sometimes I had a new driver to go with me. It would be 110 in El Paso and I would ask if they brought a coat. They'd all say it's summer I don't need a coat. Julie thank you so so much for your very well written comment . It means a lot that you would take time out of your day to tell me about your early life . It’s fascinating to me to read about people’s lives and how everything was before me . I couldn’t imagine life without a microwave ! And I am young I am 18 almost 19 in about a month . I’ve always been a bit jealous of the freedom of being able to play with friends freely and go out on walks people had before . The world is much more dangerous today . I grew up having to learn that and feared a lot of things . Sadly I don’t connect very much with my era . And I will admit it makes me pretty sad sometimes . (I don’t want to be like those people who say “I wish I was born in a different generation” but I honestly wish I was) I spend everyday living as if I’m in any other era but this one . I don’t connect with people or many things of today . Which is why I don’t have any friends . I’m alone all the time and spend all the time at home in my room . I can’t remember the last time I really went out with friends . I’d rather spend my time listening to my Carpenters record or whatever I have at hand and drawing . Or watching documentaries about the the 70’s or whatever year , Woodstock , anything just as long as it isn’t from this era . But there are maybe a FEW gems from this era like KZread , some of the tv shows , and a little bit of music that I can carry with me until my later years . :) thank you , I too hope you have many years of happiness and longevity of life . Your comment has made my night . ❤️

LYRICS If you're going to San Francisco Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair If you're going to San Francisco You're gonna meet some gentle people there For those who come to San Francisco Summertime will be a love-in there In the streets of San Francisco Gentle people with flowers in their hair All across the nation Such a strange vibration People in motion There's a whole generation With a new explanation People in motion People in motion For those who come to San Francisco Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair If you come to San Francisco Summertime will be a love-in there If you come to San Francisco Summertime will be a love-in there

I always love this wonderful song!!!!!!!!! Not always " lied " to the period of the '60ies & '70ies, just like the famous Sons of the flowers or Flowers' Sons!

The magic may not be as strong as it once was, but walking through the streets of San Francisco while listening to this really makes that city shine.

Hey I'm a 14 years old girl from germany. We had talk with one of our teachers about the hippis, the woodstock Festival, the Rolling Stones... Also we had listen to many songs which were written is this time. I love them all. But I'm sad, that I didn't live in this time in the USA because I think it must be a great time. Have a nice day/evening/ and greetings from germany♡

Believe me, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. Unfortunately even California faced many issues at the time. My parents were around at the time, and the stories they've told me aren't too appealing. The best time to be around (in most parts of the world) is now.

+Chocolate Girl Don't forget Chocolate that these people, from that generation, have been in charge until recently. Once the love-ins and getting stoned stopped they took up positions in big-business and government. Fortunately the music survived intact though.

I wonder. Why doesn't anyone preach about love, peace, and harmony in their songs anymore? I may be young but dang. Every generation from the 20's to the 90's preached about better stuff than our modern times. TLDR. I wish i was in the 70's lol

This is a music that is 100% connected to the 1960s. It has so few connotations that it is so strong. It is to hear and immediately return to the period, with what was good and bad, a perfect melodic picture. I was a child at the time, but I wanted to be in my 20s, even at the risk of having gone to Vietnam, the horror of the horrors of that time, but that's it: a portal song for the 1960s.

I was 7 years of age at the time, we had just moved to a farm to be self sufficient. The hippies were coming and going all of the time, I loved to sit and listen for hours on end the philosophic discussions. Fifty years have flashed by, for the past 25 I am convinced that the road to this happy idealism is via Jesus Christ, not what the churches push which is polluted, but Jesus words and deeds alone.
