San Diego County under Tropical Storm Warning as Hilary approaches

Hurricane Hilary churned off Mexico's Pacific coast Friday as a powerful Category 4 storm threatening to unleash torrential rains on the mudslide-prone border city of Tijuana before heading into Southern California as the first tropical storm there in 84 years.
Forecasters warned the storm could cause extreme flooding, mudslides and even tornadoes across the region.

Even a Tropical Depression can devastate communities. I live in The North Georgia Mountains, and Nicole hit us as a Depression last November. We suffered flood damage that took MONTHS to repair (mostly due to shoddy contracters, but that's beside the point). Get out to an area that is outside the cone, like the Bay Area or even further if you can. If you wanna ride it out, Stay The Fuck Indoors, do not go out at all. Yes Florida Man does it, but it's stupid to do it. Board up and secure any potential projectiles.

I lived in Florida for 30 yrs. A tropical storm 50 - 80 mile winds knocks out power lines makes trees and branches fall and power can be lost for days. Gas stations need power for pumps to even work. So 101 lesson fill up vehicles with gas, turn thermostat of fridge and house down to make it cold if power goes out. Get a back up cooler with ice for stuff in fridge, get flashlights, tea lights, lanterns or candles in jars, incense sticks to light gas stoves to cook as pilot light goes off without power. Light incense stick first then stove then your fine. Srcub tub with bleach then fill with water in case water lines contaminate or break. This water can rinse dishes don't drink or can flush toilet if needed. Water in a bucket next to a toilet is a manual flush if no water pressure. Lawn furniture and garbage cans have to come in and never grill inside a garage or house if range is electric as fumes will kill you. Water, flashlights, candles in jars easy to eat foods all a plus... A tropical storm in Florida knocked out our power for 10 days then escalated into Katrina and devastated New Orleans. Just be prepared as weather forecast cones can change on a dime depending on wind and atmospheric pressure...

One more thing the streets I lived in always flooded in Florida. Always owned a Jeep with big tires. Don't drive through flood waters bc they can be deeper than you think. Water line can't go above the tires if it does your car will float and be carried and if it covers hood of vehicle it is trashed unless it is a Hummer. When going through water in Florida we somehow knew you can't stop at a stop sign. You have to always maintain acceleration and not stop or break in high water otherwise you flood the fuel lines and your vehicle is totaled. Avoid water and if you must drive through you have to get through before you brake or your vehicle is done. You have to let oncoming traffic know you can't stop...

@ma6ik444 I remember things shift fast and if millibars of pressure are in the 900's that's not good! Also if the eye wall shifts and you are directly to the East of the storm you get the worst. We had a storm shift and come in from the Everglades which is West in Florida not East from the ocean as it pushed West the winds changed and got us on the outer edge of the wall. The geography is so different here as mountains, dry soil and valleys will cause different reactions. Florida is flat, rains all of the time, is hot humid and sunny so I don't know what it will do here. Thank God the water temperature is cold off coast of California as hot water is what intensifies hurricanes. Hitting cold water weakens it so flooding and losing power is most likely effect but here could mean flash floods and mudslides so be alert and ready.

And yeah, we are well out of the main path, but we’re definitely already seeing a big change in our weather. Foolish to not prepare IMHO! Wow.

Louisiana resident here. If wind is less than 50 mph, your problem will be rain issues. The Baja mountain range will tear the winds apart. If winds are closer to 60 or greater, brace for roof damage, trees down, power outages. Get canned goods. Bottled water. Gas up all vehicles. Move patio furniture and flower pots. Get batteries for flashlights. Candles. And sadly, have guns ready if looters become an issue. Get medicine and DON'T FORGET YOUR PETS. Either way, the apathy among your residents is frightening. And keep in mind, hurricanes PRODUCE TORNADOES, and 911 will cease operation when weather gets mean. You will be on your own. Many do not comprehend that fact. At least your are likely free from the intense flooding and strong Cat. 2 or greater winds we would suffer. Bless you all. ❤

God is holy and His standard for Heaven is perfection so how can we who have all sinned and fallen short of that perfect standard enter Heaven? We transfer our trust from man, from politicians, from this world, from ourselves, from our works, from our pastors/priests, from mary, from buddha, from allah, from idols to Jesus Christ who lived that perfect life and then laid it down and took the punishment that we deserved for our sins. Find a quiet place alone and humbly kneel before God and confess your sins before Him. Ask Him to forgive your sins and to save your soul. Tell Jesus you accept His free gift and ask Him to make you a new creation in Christ. God wants a personal relationship with you. Start one today. He absolutely longs to hear from you. Please don't put it off, we can die at any second. Eternity is forever! Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."-John 14:6 "But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in Heaven."-Matthew 10:33 “For the wages of sin is death (hell), but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”-Romans 6:23

Part of the reason we in San Diego don't believe it's going to hit hard is because we are constantly over-sold weather events here. Every time we expect a storm, we are told 2-3", and we get 0.5"... 45mph Santa Ana winds? 10mph is what we actually see. We are so disillusioned by our local weather reports that we have become indifferent to weather warnings. Not to mention the poor faith we, as a country, collectively have for news reporting in general. Too many politically charged topics, too many misreported stories, etc. We're just tuning a lot of it out. This isn't a jab at any particular station or reporter per se, but I think we need to do better with our forecasts in general. Temper expectations and tap into the 100+ years of weather records to give more reasonable estimates of storm activities. Then we will feel more comfortable and confident that what we are hearing is *exactly* what to expect.

You are missing the point, you guys have not seen a hurricane since 1939. I am a Hurricane Irma, FL survivor. We are not talking 45 mph winds. We are talking of wind gusts of 100 mph the kind that will make your windows shatter if they are not impact resistant. Debris will be air borne and cause great damage. Water surge is also an issue if you live near the water. You can have 3" of rain but a 15 foot storm surge of water. caused by the wind. Trees, large ones will fall on houses. Buy food, water, flashlights. a first aid kit. You may lose power for up to two weeks.

Been through a dozen hurricanes in Florida, and probably atleast that many tropical storms. Based on my experience, and knowing what I know when comparing So Cal to FL, here's what I think you can expect: - Just about all windows (& doors) should be safe, as far as wind goes. Some make leak a little water from wind-driven rain. - Most of the rain will be north & east of the storm (especially north of it), so when the center of the storm passes, expect less rain, but also hotter, more humid weather after all the rain is gone. - For trees that aren't regularly trimmed & maintained, branches can break off more easily and get blown by the wind. - Rain will probably pose your biggest problem. Flash floods, mudslides, and landslides would be my biggest concern for So Cal. - Downed power lines are very dangerous. Don't step in water that had a power line sitting in it, and if a power line lands on your car, STAY INSIDE YOUR CAR until help arrives, such as a power company, who knows how to remove it. - If the authorities issue a curfew, obey it. After Hurricane Frances hit Central FL in 2004, two biker couples decided to defy that order, by going out drinking and riding (I think without helmets, too) in the moonlight of Deland, FL, which had no power at the time. Early the next morning, the newspaper delivery boy found their four dead bodies and their bikes near a downed pine tree trunk, that crossed the road they road they rode on - maybe 5 to 6 feet above it, paralleling the road. OUCH!

We have everything at home and just wait it out. Who knows how this storm will go. If nothing happens it will only lull them into greater complacency.

Watching those towns people in San Diego make light of the incoming storm reminds me of the attitudes of similar folk in those 'disaster movies' from the 70s & 80s - making light of an incoming disaster until it actually hits. Let's see whether their carefree attitude is justified in 48 hours time - or whether they rue the day they didn't take the warnings seriously - if they have a home or business to return to.

We were in New Orleans just days before Katrina hit and they were all VERY cavalier despite bigger, badder warnings then they had with other storms. We asked if peeps were worried and got multiple versions of "We've been through worse" and "We are planning our regular Hurricane Party. A few days later people were drowning on Canal street.

Indeed. As a fellow (also) NE east coaster, none of these peeps are taking it seriously. Having seen a few of these, blizzards, coastal erosion, hurricanes, tropical, etc., we always had supplies, bring ready for anything. The lack of preparedness and how it hits them and homeless, could dominate the news for weeks . Not being alarmist, but peeps, get what you can NOW as rain is one thing, wind is one thing but RAIN and sustained winds for hours, is an entirely different thing. Not seen since 1939. Wake up dummies . ... 💫🕊️
