San Diego -- Commercial (WM)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Waste Management of San Diego runs a massive fleet of front loaders to service their commercial stops in San Diego county. The fleet has a solid variety of old and new trucks, and combined with many fast drivers, it sure was fun seeing them hard at work. Here are six trucks running in Downtown, North Park, and Rancho Bernardo.
(0:00) - 205851: Back in January, Alex and I were poking around in Rancho Bernardo. I had told him one of my goals for the day was to find one of El Cajon's iconic MR/Wittkes, so when we pulled into the center and spotted this, I was excited. Behind the wheel is the very skilled Frank Avila. I LOVE how he runs this truck, very smooth and quick. I was impressed how he managed to empty all the overloaded bins without spilling anything! Frank told me that he was given a new Autocar some time last year, but he didn't like it and asked for his Mack back. Smart choice!
(5:37) - 211352: Here's my favorite truck in the El Cajon fleet - the one-of-a-kind 211352! This truck is a 2011 Mack MRU with a 2009 Amrep body. Mack did a demo with WM with a new LNG chassis back in 2009, but it didn't go too well and the truck was retired just two years later. So, the body was taken off and placed onto this newer 2011 CNG chassis. Once we discovered this truck was in the El Cajon yard, many of us have tried to find it, but with how big their operation is, that was really difficult. I was able to connect with the driver, Eddie Miranda, back in December and finally get some video of this truck! Eddie is another awesome driver who runs the truck nicely. He too really likes the Macks - he had driven a dual axle MR/Wittke for many years before getting a Peterbilt. He didn't like it as much and finally switched to this truck once it opened up. The Downtown route has some cart stops, so I was glad to be able to get some video of that in action.
(14:04) - 263584: Back in September 2018, Moises and I made an attempt to find 211352. We knew the general area the truck was going to be working in, but couldn't find it. Instead, we got to meet Uzi Merino in this LE/Wittke. I actually didn't know El Cajon had this particular truck, so that was an awesome surprise! About six months after I filmed this, Uzi was given the MRU/Amrep, but handed it over to Eddie when he changed routes.
(15:01) - 211922: Ricardo Aguilar does the recycling route opposite Frank in Rancho Bernardo. Ricardo was filmed years ago doing residential in 4s Ranch, so it was awesome to meet him myself. He keeps 922 really clean and runs it really nice!
(16:54) - 263580: This LE/Wittke was helping on Ricardo's route. I love how nice this truck looks with the "Think Green, Think Clean" paint scheme so I wanted to grab a couple clips.
(18:17) - 214600: 4 of these LNG 520/Amrep FLs were originally destined for Fresno, but somehow, El Cajon got their hands on them along with a bunch of LNG ACX/Amrep ASLs. Interesting to see and a nice change from the ACX/Amrep FLs that flooded SoCal the past couple years.
Thank you to all the awesome drivers from Waste Management of San Diego! Another thanks to Alex and Moises for making this video possible.
Enjoy! Comments are always appreciated.

That MR Wittke sounds great and still has great speed thank goodness those are still around. I'm glad the MRU Amrep was saved, that also had incredible speed and looks great, hopefully that is around for years to come. That is neat seeing it collect carts too, glad you filmed multiple clips of that. Nice to see LE Wittkes on commercial, I miss seeing the Baldwain Park ones on commercial. The sound of those trucks never get old. That is nice seeing new LNG trucks in El Cajon, they look great. I look forward to more El Cajon videos in the future.

It was really entertaining, especially with such a skilled driver! Would love to see new MRU Amreps out here, dream combo right there. I also miss the LE/Wittkes, wish I got to film 265 and 206. Thank you!!

Awesome video Aaron, always look forward to your projects! As an east coast boy, the sight of the Mack’s over the seemingly endless Autocar/Pete’s of the west coast is awesome. Great work, can’t wait for the next!

Thank you! Always happy to see Macks out here, certainly hope the number increases over the next few years now that Mack is offering Cummins NG in their refuse line. Appreciate your comment!

Fantastic video! These trucks are all so entertaining, perfect way to start the video off with one of the MRs! One of countless examples of how old trucks will always be better than the newer ones. That rebodied 2011 Mack was super interesting too, hearing it’s back story was really cool. If I had to choose a favorite it was probably the LE Wittke 263584, just because I’m so used to seeing them with Curottos and they’re such great trucks. Do you know roughly how many of those LE Wittke’s are in operation, including the CNG converted ones? Outstanding video man, really enjoyed this one!

Thank you!! Agreed, I've heard mixed things about LNG Macks but most drivers down there love them. The story of the MRU only makes it even more unique! Wish that was the go-to combo down here. The LE/Wittkes are awesome! Wish I got more of 584 looking back. As of now I estimate roughly 12-15 LE Wittke FLs in El Cajon between commercial and resi, all LNG. Always appreciate your comments, thanks buddy!

Great video Aaron! All of the front loaders were really fun to watch. Interesting how you caught a lot of commercial recycle trucks down there. Hard to come across a commercial recycle truck up in North OC when they only run one route for four cities. Looks like a lot more businesses have recycle dumpsters in San Diego.

Outstanding vid Aaron! I love these MR Wittke’s. Both are a really solid product, I can definitely see why he chose those over the Pete. I’d have to say that was my favorite truck, you could tell that guy has been running FL for a long time, definitely impressed. That truck seemed to be running really well for its age too, and of course sounded great. How many of those do they have left? Also really love those MRU Amreps, those are probably my favorite new FL’s, its just too bad they don’t sound like MR’s. Cool to see him doing carts too. Interesting to see LE’s on commercial too, I’m guessing thats where they will live out the rest of their -now short- lives? I also find it funny how you guys really don’t have anything larger than 3 yards, thats so strange to me still, lol. Great job on this one!

Thank you!! Love them too, amazing how many El Cajon had. I honestly thought he was a 20 year vet or something but he's been at it like 5 years I think haha! I'm glad they kept it around so Frank actually had the option to switch back to it, thought it'd have gotten scrapped when he was given a new truck. I estimate about 30 left? Not sure how accurate that is but there's still a decent amount as frontlines last I saw. The MRU is a very elegant truck and not horrible sounding for CNG! Those LEs will stay on commercial, just glad they're around at this point. Yup I saw 1 6 YD bin but missed catching it unfortunately! Thanks again, always appreciate your comments!

Fav had to be 211352. I don’t know what type of engine that is but they always sound better to me in the rain for some reason. Super cool seeing that on carts. 205851 is another awesome truck, kicking myself for not filming AV’s more. Hope I can catch 884 one of these days. The LE’s sounded cool but I’ll always think those look better with currottos. Any of them use currottos? Chrome bumper on 211922 was a plus, also really love the 520/FL pairing lol. Wish AV would steal that truck 😉

Loved 352 as well, wish that was the go-to out here. Would be great to see 884! Half the time I forget it is up there. Imagine Sergio in that thing lol. Agree that LEs seem more in place with Curottos. There's a handful left luckily. Haha, hopefully AV's next batch of FLs are 520s! Thanks as always!

851 was such a classic WM truck! How much longer do they plan on keeping it around? And I still wonder why El Cajon got the 520s and we got sent Autocars lol. Great video!
