Horsethief Flat is little traveled black diamond route in the San Bernardino National Forest. The trail is accessed from Forest Road 3N03 about 0.9 miles east of California highway 18 between Big Bear Lake and Lucerne Valley. 3N03A offers easy access for the first section, then become more difficult with a long, step descent into Horsethief Flat. This spur road requires a long, rocky climb to exit the area. In Horsethief flat, there is a spring and a thick grove of Cottonwood trees providing a shady stopping point lunch or a snack. The views while descending into Horsethief Flat are spectacular. You can see into Johnson Valley and the Hammers trails. This trail is best traveled in small groups and should not be undertaken with a single vehicle. It is a long hike out and cell service is spotty at best. There are several good spots along the easy entry section and within Horsethief Flat for camping which makes a great overlanding destination.
