It's theorized that Renner poisoned the food she made for the orphans so that she may fulfill one of the conditions needed to be able to open the box to get the fallen seeds to turn into an imp and join Nazarick. I was skeptically at first, but after reading it again, I realized there was no point of adding this info in the LN if it wasn't something related to Renner and the aftermath of the war. The anime further proved this by adding the scene of Renner telling the workers to eat the food as well, meaning she didn't want any witnesses of the poisoning to be alive. Edit: I forgot that Renner thanked Albedo for preparing the poison in Volume 14 and now in Episode 13, so it should be pretty obvious that this theory has been confirmed.

Had the same thought, strengthened by the possible parallel with Blue Rose poisoning Lakyus. Another guess, combining with my hypothesis when first reading the volume, was that Renner knocked out the kids with the food so that (1) they could get transferred to Nazerick and wouldn't get killed accidentally in the invasion so that (2) they would serve as the sacrifice for Brain's class change like how the her father served for Renner. That is, if the kids weren't already used for Renner's ascension. Reasoning being that I am guessing some level of personal attachment is required for the sacrifice, and at this point the only ones Brain has attachment to that could still be alive after the invasion are the orphans.

He may tell Ainz that he is the strongest human in this era or something. It is extremely rare for humans to attain this level. Even stronoff wasn’t that level. The fact that Brain fought Cocytus at the end of his story was the best possible outcome in my opinion. He fought an enemy that would allow him to die with honour and respect. There was just so much symbolism in that scene. Both took stance with their katana and introduced themselves as samurais would, moreso Brain thanked Cocytus for indulging him. While Brain died satisfied, Cocytus prioritized Brain's resolve clearly over Nazarik's benifits. He then took a turn so as not to belittle Brain's corpse much like a pebble by the road, knowing full well his Master is in waiting. In his own words Cocytus considers himself his Master's sword who does not think, rather strikes down his foes. His actions clearly contrasted his ideals.

So the respect Cocytus show to Brain is very important that in martial arts you never walk past someone who is a honorable , higher rank or even a equal. It's a huge disrespect to due so. So by Cocytus walking around brain he is showing the up most respects to him both as a Warrior and a equal. Not a equal in power but in spirit.

The anime has done the books an amazing service. Of course the books being the first anime anything I've ever bought, I can't stress how good they are (paladin of the holy kingdom so far is my favorite arc). I highly recommend supporting the author and buying at least a few of his books. The world building, the character building. The fact that it's not afraid to game of thrones (pre season 6) a character that has been built up and audiences have grown attached to that person. The respect cocytus gives brain as a warrior. Unbelievably well done anime/book.

@@Zikkar I mean that's what web/light novels mostly are. The authors have great ideas in their heads, but implementation is... meh, so far behind of any world-recognized ones, e.g. the mentioned SolaF (game of thrones). This kind of quality will never pass through publishing houses outside Japan. Yet japanese otakus and you guys don't really care at this point, it sells somehow. Thanks to that I can enjoy the anime tho. I do love spoilers and I'm really trying to get into reading this novel, but the more I read, the more it feels like a waste of my time.

@ Spooky Scary Graviton You realize most western authors are given two to three(sometimes more) years between writing each installment to a novel series so they have more time to refine the narrative however they want it. (Except for Tolkien he dedicated over a decade researching and working on his worldbuilding before writing the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I remember the author of Dune, Frank Herbert, spent about twenty years writing his novel and the world of its setting before it was finally published as two separate books. Originally Dune was going to be one book, but the publicist thought a single book over a thousand pages would be too intimidating for most readers. As for Game of Thrones I don’t know, but based on what I’ve heard the author might have a case of worldbuilder’s disease as well.) Japanese light novel publications are usually given a year or so, but not usually any more than two years. So you can’t really compare the two because the authors are under different time limits to publish their work. Given how much content Maruyama packs into his work I can’t help but be impressed.

I haven't read the LNs yet but I've heard they put an unnecessary amount of detail about the Yggdrasil game in there. Not that that is a criticism but it's a lot that doesn't have to do with the main story. Is that true? Also, the fact that there was so much detail about the game could set the ground works for an actual game. So yea I kind of hope a game comes from this as well.

It had a strong western / samurai showdown vibe also I felt. It made sense and Brain was actually one of my favorite human characters also. I really would love to see him come back but if he does not the ending was dang near perfect for him. I have a sliver of hope he comes back and is able to put all the characters together and who they work for. Plus I really loved the trio of Sebas, Brain and Climb. Some of my favorite parts of the anime was seeing them 3 together.

Personally, I don't think the internal dialogue was needed for the Cocytus-brain stuff. Sometimes less is more. Brain's satisfied look after falling on his knees tells it all. Cocytus slowly moving around his body shows the respect he has for this warrior. Honestly, this was an improvement.

It’s true. When it comes to sword fights between masters, it ends pretty quickly. I used to do fencing and our two saber instructors had a match to show us what it was like at a higher level. Most didn’t last longer then 10 seconds. The rushed the middle of the fencing lane, two three strikes and it was a hit. The longest was probably around 30 seconds. Both went in, parried everything, tested each other’s concentration then another two or three strikes then it’s a hit. It’s all really quick.

The duel between Cocytus and Brain actually reminded me of another anime duel between Ikki and Touka in Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry. The tension before that one strike is overwhelming and you can feel it in both scenarios. Kudos to the anime staff for bringing this scene to life.

I think Brain’s should stay dead. He has a warriors spirit like gazef and I don’t think he would want to be resurrected anyway. In my opinion, Brain’s death might serve as a motivation for climb or the children he helped train to maybe take up the sword against ain’s. Not only that but Nazarik has already move forward on their path to taking over the world so I would love to see a conflict with the arcland council state or the Theocracy having refugee’s or survivors from the Reezties kingdom working with them to challenge ain’s. I also really want to see more about the godkin. I feel like all the information involving them is cool but we haven’t seen any of them since season 1.

He's dead for good. I don't get why other people are so obsessed over him. Some people claim that Cocytus commands the frost virgin to take away his body but it didn't happen in LN. Also Mare is going to raze the kingdom with his spell and there is also another npc who's going to do a 'clean up' in the kingdom, so Brain's corpse is gone for good.

As far as your thoughts on Brains death go and it's effect on other characters, I think people would find it hard to disagree considering Gazef's death alongside it. I hope they show more of the children later as a substitute for the refugee idea though since it's implied most of the Kingdom's population was wiped out expect for the 1,000 people the 8 Fingers people were with. Spoilers for anime onlys until episode 13 comes out- It would be cool if later in the light novels when Climb and Renner are working at Nazarik they see Brain frozen in Ice somewhere there.

    - That ending where Cocytus shows his respect for Brain by preserving his body in ice and then go around his corpse surprised me, you can really feel his individuality come out there as he knows he'd be a great asset to Ainz but wants to respect his warrior spirit, it was kind of moving to watch that pan out. Brain really went all out though, it's unfortunate he couldn't get a hit in. - Lakyus' party was such a surprise though lol, the way they all attacked her in order to take her out of the capital, I was so confused by what was happening. Renner wielding Gazef's sword was also an unexpected moment, she looked really comfortable with it which before this episode I wouldn't have thought to imagine. Climb was so taken aback by it lol. - I thought it was funny they gave Aura's monsters personality.

Evileye is a Mage. Lakyus is an Warrior. People tend to forget that even if a Mage is higher level than a Warrior, they don't have a chance of overpowering the latter thru strength. Also regarding the bonus volume, it really is a must read. Lemme spoil it a bit to entice you... It is an alternate timeline where Ains is known as Momonga. He was not transferred with the Tomb of Nazarick and is not emotionally suppressed. The first denizen he met also happened to be Evileye. And they became companions as well.
