This type of discipline is taken very seriously esp during the bakumatsu era. Where most of the assassination attempt were done in restaurants or inns. The assassination of Ryoma Sakamoto is a very good testament on this practice

Great documentary. It's a little confusing why well-made documentaries like this and lesser documentaries on the "katana" forget to mention similar sword-making techniques already in practice in China for many centuries prior. The point is to be more historically accurate. The Japanese refinement of the process seems clear, but the origins need to be made clear, as well. Consider the Zhanmadao, curved-blade in China in the Song Dynasty, and folding forging techniques in China with the use of clay as far back as the Tang Dynasty. Also consider Shimane Japan, the center of katana making since the making began, is in the southwest, quite near to Korea. The Kanji for Shimane is the same as the Chinese characters for "China" but literally meaning "middle kingdom," etc. Historical accuracy is important, is all I'm saying. I'm very fond of the katana, Japanese arts, and so on, but I also like historical accuracy, which in the end, makes the story of the katana richer and more interesting. Not everything is a competition between nations. The English cannot deny the Greeks and Romans made the English alphabet possible, for example, which is now the most widely spoken language in the world. Without the Roman alphabet, the civilization of Europe would've been highly unlikely. Without the written word, civilization is very difficult if not impossible to accomplish.

I really don’t get why you always need to follow the etiquette of no attack but self defense. Seriously, if I would have studied martial arts for years and years I’d use every chance I got to beat people up. That fly over there looked at me wrong. Beat his ass up. The Mosquito tried to bite me, chop his ass. Shit is about to go down!

I have heard that one can defecate themselves after immeadeate severe trauma occurs such as having a limb snapped as your face spirals to the ground, or missing an eye or receiving a crushed trechea. So you might be right.
