Samurai Didn't Fight with Two Short (or Long) Katana ...But What If They Did?

Спорт

When it comes to Nitōryu, dual-wielding, it almost always fights with a long Uchi-katana and a shorter wakizashi. But does that mean fighting with two katana of the same length is weak? Let’s find out.
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will experiment what you could do with two Wakizashi and two Uchi-katana. Fighting with two Uchi-katanas is especially intense, and it has led to techniques that only someone like Tsukada Sensei could possibly avoid. So please watch this video until the end.
By the way, we have started a new online lesson on Sundays at 10:30 pm JST. Check out our Patreon page for more information!

So the wakizashi can use precise movements, and the uchigatana has more reach, I believe that's also why using a long and a short sword to dual wield is the preferred method. As the Books of Five Rings says, "The long sword must be wielded broadly and the short sword closely"

Fantastic video as always. All moves are straight to the point, but the standout for me was the double reverse grip. I expected the block to work. However, the restrict and the finishing afterwards are splendid. This may be a defensive technique, but it's really akin to a snake hunting its prey.

It's really great seeing someone so passionate about sword fighting and martial arts as Seki Sensei. Hypothetically where dual wielding fails is cutting power against armored opponents and stability when deflecting heavier weapons. And if you give up cutting power you'd want precision to target weak spots, but doing so sacrifices reach, by using a wakizashi and an uchi-katana you get a bit of everything. Although tradition required one to carry a short and long sword, I don't think it's the main culprit, the main reason would be warfare and training the most effective methods for it.

The 'naginata' art you refer to is Tendo Ryu, actually a Sogo Bujutsu (although this ryuha does primarily emphasize naginata-jutsu). Curiously the 2 short swords are actually slightly different lengths. I have asked about the origins of our nito-jutsu, but no one seems to know any more. It stands in odd contrast to my studies of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu Kenjutsu, although the nito kata both share the use of juji-dome (the X-block/intercept). It's very interesting to see Seki-sensei's take on the use of 2 short swords.

What I love to do with two short swords is to parry with one and thrust with the other simultaneously. That's IMHO the best way to deal with longer swords. Also, you can do a lot from the bind. You can press a longer weapon down until you can reach the opponent with your other weapon. Just as sticky hands, it allows you to feel the opponents intention faster than you can see his movement.

That’s interesting, kind of reminds me of Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus (Star Wars nerd here) in the comics lore he was the same, only respected people who fought with just 1 lightsaber. I know Star Wars did get some of its inspiration from Japanese history though. Also Musashi was interesting because he was known to go against those rules and think outside the box (like the time he used a big paddle in a duel)

  • @DIREWOLFx75

That's not how you normally hold a dagger or knife if you're fighting with it. Basic grip for knifefighting is, well, like you'd hold on to the handle of a bicycle almost, with your left hand in front of the blade(held in parallel to your body) so it can be used to cover the movements of the knife for a moment extra. Preferably with something covering your left hand capable of blocking attacks, most commonly a thick piece of clothing. A knife held blade down like that, you have almost no options at all for movement with it, you cant turn the blade forward and nearly all potential attacks are very wide in their movements. It can work with a short sword, but that's pretty much the only thing that grip is functional for.

This isn't entirely true, or maybe just misleading. Some samurai did prefer to fight with a smaller primary katana and therefore same or similar length to a large wakizashi.
