Samsung QE T.V very strange aerial socket

Ғылым және технология

Here is something to look out for on new TV s , I have no idea what the purpose is and yes I did manage to resolder the new aerial socket which was not easy.

From that switch, Samsung will collect statistics about their customers and sell it to others or decide certain markets don't need a tuner, etc.. Assuming the customer hooks up the smart features that is. Would be interesting to back probe a bit. Thanks for sharing!

As the connector has broken off once and will almost certainly do so again I'd be tempted to solder a flying coax lead to where it's soldered in, bridge the 2 pins and put an F plug on the other end, a belling Lee to F adapter can then be connected to it. Not going to then come apart. I remember on some old Pace satellite boxes the Uhf pass through aerial socket diameter was a fraction small, made for a very tight fit and guess what happened when someone tried to remove the Uhf aerial plug 😊.

Customer said it was fitted to a wall with a very short RF lead and someone swung the TV out. Knowing what mistake he's made I doubt he will be doing it again.

@@benparker4290 solder is only a soft metal so its very common for customers to break off the socket's, due to the small space inside the tuner it requires great care to re solder both wires but not impossible and you could always replace the whole tuner if you cant manage to re fit the socket.

Thank you for sharing this video with us. When you get the TV working again perhaps you could try plugging in an aerial (i.e. shorting out the switch) and seeing what effect it has on the TV. Do extra menus appear or perhaps some menus disappear dependant on the aerial being present?

Guesswork on my part but that may be a socket for the male F type plug they used to fit on some indoor digital HDTV antennas. Another guess, the socket detects when that antenna is plugged in and disconnects the feed from the satellite box cable.

Thanks for another interesting video Michael. Have you made any videos about the active power, via the antenna socket, that many TVs use to power a masthead antenna. My Sharp TV outputs a fixed 5v but I can not find the maximum current anywhere. I would like to use the 5v to power a relay to turn on other TV related appliances, which I imagine will need a filter to separate the 5v DC from the RF - maybe another subject for a video?

The times we used to get the 60 Watt soldering iron out to resolder the aerial sockets, was it ECL 1043 tuners back then?

  • @PRDowding

I seem to remember having one of those in a year or so ago, I put a "standard" socket in and soldered the two points in the tuner together, my thinking was that they would be connected together when an aerial plug was inserted any way. Seemed to work ok. Could it be that it's to grey out the aerial input symbol on the input source menu when no aerial was connected ?

Doesn't make any sense as the TV would know there was no incoming signal if the aerial was disconnected, don't know what would have happened if the customer didn't bring the old socket in and I just fitted a single pin one without realising.

Not knowing these models but just a thought. Don't these Samsungs have that easy autosetup where they ask the user to connect all sources and initiate setup by detecting devices in the background, including auto tuning in the background while the user is entering internet settings? It would be pointless to auto scan through an unconnected tuner (especially if the user was connecting both aerial and satellite) so maybe it's to detect that and autoskip an unused socket?

  • @m29ele

Could it be used to detect if aerial plug is plugged in, so on the input source menus, normally hdmi sockets are greyed out of there is no plug/signal in them, so could the tv input also be greyed out with no coax plug in the socket? Ill have to test this , next time i get one in.

If the TV has a smart diagnostic - to on-screen guide the user through an installation or 'why isn't my TV working' procedure - it would allow the logic to distinguish between cable not plugged in and cable plugged in but still no-signal condition. This would allow for awareness of user plugging a different cable in thinking that was the antenna, plugging in a plug that has left its center pin behind in the previous TV, or there being an antenna/cabling fault resulting in loss of signal.

When any connected device ie console/sat box is turned on, I have noticed in the past that the tv switches to the other channel ie scart or hdmi automatically so this must be the same tech.

  • @PlatypusPerspective

That's a good thought, since I'm retired I no longer have access to schematics to investigate. Energy saving is certainly an issue nowadays, and with sections of TVs having rails supplied by individual buck converters, that would be easy to implement.

If not, it'll hide the options for DVB-T/C in the menu or skips those options when using the source button on the remote, so you don't have to press it 10 times to skip past inputs you don't even have connected. Even my 12 year old samsung does this with all the inputs, it checks the resistance of the composite/s-video/component jacks to sense if anything's plugged into them and if not, it removes those options so they don't show up when pressing the source button. They still show up in the TVs settings menu though (grayed out till something is connected)
