A few people have found our spider charts a bit confusing, so just to clarify - the scores on the spider charts are for the corresponding usage rating (eg. TV Shows, Movies, etc), not for a specific test.

I’m buying the COSTCO X90CJ 75 inch that automatically comes a whopping total of 5 year warranty. Costco tend to change the model so you can’t exchange or price match. I hate that. How we X90CJ is same model as X90J. Costco is king of selling TVs at very good price and warranty full coverage is a plus!

You did a nice job with this review. I just happened to be at the store today making comparisons. My main use would be sports . While I appreciate the wider viewing angle on the Samsung the dirty screen effect concerns me. I watched the Samsung when an NFL game was on. Beautiful picture indeed. I would suspect the dirty screen effect might show up more during a hockey game but there was no sign of it on football. By the same token the Sony also looked very good on the Football game. Seeing these TVs in person is big. I suspect the Sony might have an edge in the reliability department. Too many choices out there lol. Thank you for this review.

Thank you for the great video. Watching this in March 2022 and I want to replace my almost 10 year old LG 47LM615S, I assume that both TVs will be a huge improvement over what I have now. I just wonder how relevant Dolby Vision support really is compared to HDR10 and HDR10+ ... Right now my old, trustworthy LG has none of all those features, it even is edge-lit. For someone with the following use-case, does anyone of you have a suggestion what to choose, maybe even a completely different brand? 30% TV, 40% streaming content (Netflix, Prime), 20% Gaming, 10% Sports. Console right now is Xbox One X, but will be upgraded to Series X this year and sooner or later there will also be a PS5. Not playing competetively, just for fun, maybe coop multiplayer. Never used the game mode on my old LG anyways. Also, what can be said about the support of the software? I tend to keep my TV for a long time and don't want to be forced into buying a set-top box after 3 years just because Tizen or Google TV or whatever system is being dumped by its company. This is somewhat looking into the crystal ball, but how did companies handle this in the past? My old LG is basically just a big screen without any smart functions. I can do everything via the Xbox, but having the apps natively in the TV is nice.

I did not see this review till today but last week purchased X90J. In this review it may seem the 2 sets seems closely matched but after comparing the tv's myself before my purchase, the Sony X90J has far superior picture quality to all the rest. You say the viewing angle makes the Sammy better as a PC monitor, I do not agree with that, and this is 100% of my use case. I sit right close and better picture quality is a much bigger factor than the viewing angle of VA, for me. In store I just put the same content on both and try and adjust the picture till I'm happy and the X90J was a no brainer for me. Why would I game at 1440p? The RTX 3080 smashes out over 100FPS on this at 4K and its just beautiful thing. Have a great time ya'll with whatever set you choose ! The RTings for each use case is important because people do use these things differently.

Seriously this isn't even a competition. The X90J is better in every single aspect. Come on Rtings... Starting to lose faith in you guys. No the QN80A isn't better at anything. Nothing matters if it has THAT shitty contrast ratio and black uniformity. The color volume makes up for the lack of color gamut that you see. But in the end it's not just about static numbers. It's about practical image quality. The X90J is simple way better.

@Ronald Trump Yes they are important. Some of the new and expensive Qned from LG with MiniLED might help if they still use IPS panel to make the blacks much better. But IPS panels are not good for contrast which is important. They have wider viewing angles but that can be had on VA panels as well when they do optical layers on them. The X90J should be 1200 for 55".. It's a good TV. It is certainly WAY WAY better than LG Nano. That is a guarantee.

Considering you photograph and record the subpixel structure with every review on your website and sometimes make references to it, could you perhaps actually test the TVs (in the future maybe) as Windows monitors to see how sharp and correctly text renders? Because nearly all of them use a BGR structure, instead of RGB, which is what Windows relies on to render things in a pixel perfect kinda way. This is the one and only reason I'm considering the Q80A, because it seems to be about the only choice I have for RGB subpixels, and considering I'm going to hook up my PC as a main monitor, I want stuff to look correct. IDK, maybe you could slip that in somewhere in the future ;)

As far as I know (from long term usage), Windows only cares about the sub-pixel layout with text rendering, and you can use the Clear Type tuner (comes with Windows these days, called "Adjust ClearType text") to tell it what kind of sub-pixel layout your particular screen uses, last time I checked BGR was supported implicitly.

How can you determine which panel your TV has? I ordered a Q75Q8BA from CostCo and have read conflicting theories on that naming convention. Some say that the "BA" is the Q80T from 2020 that has been repackaged as a 2021, while others disagree. I'm hoping to get the 2020 model as that has the VA panel but I can't seem to figure out where to look.

This was the dumbest shit I've ever seen.. Their logic is so flawed it made me vomit.. Their "categories" makes no f**king sense when the Base important aspects are ignored.. Am I the only one that saw how bad the contrast was on QN80A and how bad the black uniformity is.. Literally clouding. Why would ANYONE ignore those aspects when for example choosing a PC monitor between them? And go "hurr durr, the Samsung as 5ms faster input lag", which isn't noticeable. They claim better viewing angles. First off More of a SHIT picture doesn't make it better. Second you DO NOT sit closer than 5-6 feet with a TV that big. You will get neck problems and eye issues. So viewing angles head on will not matter. I mean SERIOUSLY did you SEE the black uniformity and local dimming and DSE? Why the HELL would anyone pick that for a PC monitor.. 1440P doesn't matter when games have resolution scaling. You would always keep your PC monitor AT NATIVE resolution or it will be a blurry mess. These guys are clueless. DSE would also be bad on a monitor with a lot of white screens/pages. Low contrast ratio would be worse for legibility of text and overall Picture IQ..

What a great review! I am looking to buy a 50in and had already narrowed it down between those two. I had a slight hunch that I ll probably go for the Sony and this review also confirmed that. Couple of remarks/queries: 1) Looks like VRR support is finally here! Current X90J series is the X93J and X94J and at their page, VRR is listed as supported So the Sony should be closing the gap with the Samsung, as far as gaming goes 2) For me, the lack of HDR10+ is more of a consideration, as I ll mostly use the monitor for watching UHD content (e.g. movies/docus). Does the lack of HDR10+ is a big disadvantage in that respect? Is it something that may be supported in the future via a firmware update? 3) Since your review is based on 55in models of the two, this is a bit tricky for me. Because I will go for a 50in, then the comparison isn't quite the same. At 50in, both Samsung and Sony are VA panels.. In my case, the Samsung will also have a VA panel (same as the Sony) So I am not sure how the balance would shift between the two - or if it would be a clear win for the Sony for the 50in..? As far as I understood the differences between the two panels - VA is superior in terms of IQ/contrast and ADS scores better in viewing angles... What about longevity? From your experience, is there a different 'life expectancy' between these two panels? I don't buy TVs often, so I would like to have my chosen TV last for the years to come.. Is there an upper mid-range TV like those two, with an ADS *50in* panel? 4) The TV stand of the X93J/X94J is listed to be a total 111,7 cm from foot to foot I have a TV stand which is 112cm (!) So it probably won't fit, *unless* I can adjust the TV stand/legs to be positioned a bit further closer to each other - is that possible? Are the legs on that Sony adjustable or fixed only to be positioned at the very edges of the screen? From your video on that X90J, I can see that the feet are adjustable - so is it safe to assume that the same goes for the X93J? Would really appreciate your input to the above, so I can decide today if possible. Wimbledon is already on, so I would like to have the TV asap :)

Just to add to my above remarks/queries Seems that Samsung is using ADS panels on 55in size and above At the same time, Sony goes VA in all its range I have checked your website reviews, according to which Samsung QN50QN90AAFXZA is the best 50in LED option to go...which apparently, also uses VA panel So my question now would be, how that Samsung QN50QN90AAFXZA model compares to a latest Sony X93J/X94J model (also for 50in of course) That differentiation on the panel usage for the Samsung models makes a choice between Sony and Samsung not very obvious... Regardless of the key difference between VA vs ADS (wider angle, response times vs superior contrast), are those panel technologies have similar life expectancies? Are any of the two more prove to have dead pixels (either on arrival or in the future)?

Hey Jason, We're definitely happy to try and address some of your concerns. 1. That's a fair conclusion. When we made this video Sony hadn't rolled out VRR support yet, so that gap was still present. 2. As for HDR10+, that's just what Samsung chooses to focus on instead of Dolby Vision (which Sony has). You can read more about that here if you'd like. www.rtings.com/tv/learn/hdr10-vs-dolby-vision Overall though, they're pretty similar technically speaking, but there's just less HDR 10+ content available at the moment, that's all. 3. You're right, going for the 50'' models (which also happens to be a VA instead of IPS for the Samsung) makes it a bit trickier. For the most part, that's right. IPS panels will have better viewing angles and VA panels will have an increase in contrast. However, since we haven't tested the 50'' Q80A with a VA panel, we can't say how they compare. Sorry about that. With both of them being VA panels though, they should be a bit more similar performance wise, and you'll probably be happy either way. As for other ADS options, you could try something like the X85J, though it's only ADS for the 43'' size. As for longevity, there's really no way to say if one will last you longer than the other. At the end of the day, so many different things can impact longevity, and you could by 10 of the exact same TV and give them to 10 different people and some could last 10 years while some may only last 2. If you treat either TV well though, you should be just fine! 4. We usually try to comment on the stand in the full review on our website, but unfortunately there's no option to position them closer, so you need a fairly large surface to put the TV on (at least for the unit we purchased). Best of luck!

@@RTINGSdotcom Clear about (2). From that article, it sounds to me that Dolby Vision isn't lacking anything in comparison to HDR10+ Regarding (4) - which unit are you referring to? On your X90J review, I can see that the stands are not positioned to the very edges. At least not for the 55in version of it. Are you saying that for the 50in variant, the stands are fixed only to the very edges? I can see that the list with the best mid-range LED TVs are mostly using VA panels. Which is interesting, as it would seem that in some models, they ve managed to imrpove the viewing angle limitation of the VA, without losing much of the contrast. So if that is the case, I don't see a reason for me sticking with an ADS option But for me, looking for a top mid-range 50in, seems my options are very limited Looking at your full list of 'best TVs', and filtering out the OLED and selecting only 50inch, seems there are only the following options: Q80, Q90A / Q90B, X950H / X95J, X90J The X950H (or its successor X95J) isn't available at 50in, anywhere I ve looked here in Germany. One additional reason I favoured Sony, is because of the Android. And that Samsung remote looked ackward to me, but I guess this is something I can live with, if everything else is close to perfect But then, I can see you are based in Canada. And here in Europe, it seems we are getting different panels with some of those models For example, I know for sure that the 55in Q80A (QE50Q80A), in the Greek market, is actually a *VA* panel. Which contradicts your review (according to which 55in till 85in are ADS). So in the EU market, we are kind of 'in the dark', as we don't know which Samsung model has which panel. Luckily, that doesn't seem to apply for Sony - I think they are all VA here in Europe (...) That leaves me with Q80 (GQ50Q80AATXZG) X90J (XR50X90JAEP) Q90A (GQ50QN90AATXZG) Q90B (GQ50QN90BATXZG) - which for some reason retails +400EUR more than the Q90A! How can I possibly confirm that the above product codes (in the parenthesis') that are on sale here in Germany, are actually the models you reviewed - which apparently are all VA? For example, how can I tell if GQ50QN90AATXZG (Q90A on sale here) has VA panel? That Q90A was the best rated LED on your site. But if the one I buy here has ADS panel, then I am stepping into the unknown.. If I cannot confirm what panel those Samsung models boast, at least can I safely assume that XR50X90JAEP (X90J variant on sale here) has VA - therefore is the one that did pretty well in this review here? Is the only way, me going to a local shop and start pressing on the panels, to try and figure which is VA and which ADS? Seems quite unfeasible Apologies about the long thread, but if I m to spend 1K for a TV, just wanna make sure its the right one for me

Earlier today, and based on my conclusion from the RTINGS, I have received my QN94A Really happy about it. Especially the build quality really stands out from the moment you take it out of the box! And image quality is superb too. I am really happy I went for the Samsung over the Sony (X92J) in the end I just need your opinion once again, this time, regarding proper use My main usage of this TV is to watch UHD content, which I playback from my laptop, and via a high quality HDMI (2.1) cable (Oehlbach Flex Evolution) My question is - should I leave the cable permanently connected to the TV - and just plug it in the laptop, whenever I want to watch content (usually Blu-Ray) I am concerned that taking out / plugging in the cable consistently, could wear out the HDMI port on the TV over time. I have also read on few occasions (for the QN90A model), that some HDMI port went faulty after some time. I don't know if that was due to improper use - or if the QN90A has a defect/weakness on that respect (I presume the HDMI implementation is identical on both QN90A and QN94A variants) Also, when I connect the TV and the laptop via HDMI - is it a good practice to do the physical cable connection whilst both are turned off? Or it doesn't matter? I am worried about static electricity. On my previous TV, sometimes, when connecting the HDMI cable, there was a short 'spike' whilst plugging the cable into the port. I don't know what impact this may have on the longevity of my new TV - I just want to ensure that I don't do anything stupid from my side I am already using an AVR to stabilize the voltage input to the TV and the laptop, but as mentioned above, I m looking for some good practices here, so that I can continue to enjoy this TV for years to come. I could of course use something like the Chromecast Ultra (??), to cast content to the TV, without ever having any physical connection between the two, so in that case all of my concerns would be gone. But I m not sure the quality will be quite the same as with that HDMI cable..

Hey Jason, Based on the information you provided, it seems like the easiest answer is 'whatever's most convenient for you'. If it's easier to leave it plugged into the TV, that's fine. If you prefer to remove it and plug it in when you want to use it, that's also fine. Same goes with plugging in the cables. If you prefer to err on the side of caution and plug it in when both devices are turned off, that's okay, but if not, that's also okay. As for the chromecast, the quality should be pretty much the same. The only thing that could change is if your TV was only able to remove judder from native apps and not external devices (though that isn't the case here).

@@RTINGSdotcom So in other words, from your experience, the HDMI ports are not easily damaged from constant use (taking into assumption that I plug in/out the cables carefully). However, I d prefer to just leave the cable on the TV permanently, and just let the laptop take the abuse by pluging it in/out Also, regarding what's the 'order of power', I think the best is to have both TV and laptop turned on, because that way, the TV recognizes the input source from the moment I plug in the HDMI into the laptop. Before disconnecting the laptop though, I would switch back to another source (e.g. TV), as to not abruptly change it by just removing the cable. I don't know if all these will have a positive impact in the long term, but I m not losing anything by adhering to them As for the Chromecast (Ultra), it says it can do 4K60, which is good enough for me, but it seems that the latest Chromecast with Google TV, doesn't offer the option to 'cast' from a laptop/PC screen - which is precisely what I want (only via tablet/mobile, Android OS). Which kind of makes only the Chromecast Ultra applicable to me. And Chromecast Ultra is getting hard to find now...

So if we compare it with the samsung qn85a, is the sony xr90j successful in contrast and local dimming again. Does it fail until the q80a?

Sony appears superior to the Samsung and a clear choice if you sit in front of your TV. Looking forward to the X95J release.

I chose between Samsung Q8 vs Sony X91j I with the Sony. The blacks are amazing the colors do pop (not as bright tho). But the picture on the Sony looks better. It’s amazing out the box.

Hello, I was wondering if you knew if the 50 inch VA panel Q80A that came out in Europe would have better contrast than the 55 inch ADS panel. Cause I was thinking of buying it but only numbers I've seen say the 50 inch model has a static contrast ratio of 100:1 compared to the 1500:1 of the 55' model which is confusing cause as you say VA panels should have better contrast than ADS no? Is it just a wrong stat and the 50' model will have better contrast? I can't find any other sources for the 50' model. Thanks. Maybe because it's a VA panel and doesn't wide viewing angle or 120hz like its big brothers, I should buy the Sony x90J...

Hey! So we can't say for sure what the numbers would be exactly without our own testing. That being said, the VA panel should have better contrast than the ADS (IPS family) panel. We can't speak to data provided by anyone else though, but as you note, that would be a surprising result.

Can you please share a comparison of Samsung QN90A vs Sony X90J. What's the internal memory. Does QN90A allow installation of new apps from play store?
