    Love the video Armando! However, I think what would have been a more realistic comparison to include in the test would be a shot where the camera is moving or a shot where many subjects are moving in frame. This would test out the bit depth and give a more accurate sense of how much data is captured and the quality of the 4K codecs. Thanks man!🙏🙌

    I would have loved to see some photographs taken and compared both in good and low light, also cropped in 100% to see the actual levels of detail both can capture. At these resolutions + good light I honestly didn't expect to see much of a difference, phones have come a long way to be able to compete with larger cameras in some situations. I have old Canon EOS 550D budget DSLR and I recently compared Oneplus 6 with it just for the lols. I had my jaw dropped once I realised the phone managed to produce better image quality in some cases (in daylight), even when I cropped in 100% on both. Oneplus 6 pictures had more artifacting going on at closer inspection, but seriously, even though the DSLR I was comparing to is old, I have a decent lens on it, and it has been good enough to do some professional level work over the years. The smartphones we have today are mind blowing, I would love the camera on Note 9, but the price is way too high for what ot offers to me personally.

    Photos would generally look better than videos because nowadays smartphones use image stacking to improve image quality. With a photo, they can stack up to 20 frames for a single image, but in a video, that number is limited.

  • @PhazonBlaxor

    @PhazonBlaxor

    6 жыл бұрын

    Bryan U My point was that you can actually tell the difference between a full frame sensor vs. Small phone sensor if you compare the effective resolution by cropping in 100%. It's hard to tell the difference at this point without doing so at these resolutions. Also, I would like to see your source for this "frame stacking". Do new mirrorless cameras also do this? If not, what would be preventing them from using the same trick?

  • @bryan7300

    @bryan7300

    6 жыл бұрын

    PhazonBlaxor You could tell the difference obviously. However assuming that we compare the pure RAW footage, and both of the sensors have the same megapixel count, the picture quality should be nearly identical in a day light scene with lot of light. Smartphones do lot of processing on the fly that can degrade the footage. It also has to compress the footage so that the processing is done nearly instantaneously. EIS is one of the big factors that can soften up tiny details. All smartphones perform frame stacking. They do it when they are taking photos all the time. Look up "Google's HDR+ algorithm" or "Samsung Multi-Frame Noise Reduction technology". In videos however, it's not certain if they do the same frame stacking, or if they use a more faster solution like zigzag pattern HDR, where it takes a single image where half the pixels have low, and other half high exposures then merges them togethor. What's special about Google's HDR+ is it's amazing at motion blur reduction, sometimes even better than DSLR's. This is because instead of taking a single exposure frame, it takes multiple low exposure frames, then uses fancy algorithms to re-align them.

I found it hard to tell which I thought was better. Would be good to see them compared through some alternate challenging tests such as low light. I did spot that the S9 had some issues with chromatic aberration in some of the pics.

Also what is the out of the box settings of the note 9 1080 2k 4k 30fps 60fps? Not just the dynamic range, the reds but also the depth of field is also a give away. This was an awesome video I hope you do this with more phones and other mirror less cameras!

    This is why I really love technology. We have lived in an age when phone cameras can be equivalent to professional cameras. It is not impossible that in a few years a phone camera can beat a professional camera. I really can't wait for that moment 🙌🙌🙌

    There's a very obvious jitter that all smartphone cameras have when you pan or have moving things in the frame. As such, it was pretty easy to distinguish the two. That said, as far as quality's concerned, they are very close

    It is fairly easy to differentiate it with a trained eye. Due to sensor differences, you lose way more quality even at 4k on a smartphone compared to a DSLR but it isn't that drastic, though noticeable. To think phones are getting better and better in just a few years is amazing, (starting 2-3 yrs ago was when it became super good)

    4k might be slightly sharper with a mirrorless camera due to the higher resolution of the sensor (if the lens is sharp), but you won't be able to see that on a 5" screen.

    I guessed correct for every shot. What gives it away is the sharpness on the Sony! Although the camera on the Note 9 is very impressive the Sony takes sharper images. License plates, concrete walls and other objects appear to have a bit more detail with the Sony. Regardless its impressive Samsung has been able to pull of this level of image quality on a smartphone camera. I cant wait to get my BEAST MODE Galaxy Note 9 with 512gigs of storage! Awesome video!!

    One of the reason is because Note9 has EIS (electronic image stabilization) enabled, which degrades the picture quality slightly, but you can disable that in settings.

    I actually guessed all of the images and it was quite easy to do so (for me at least - might be luck). The Note9 usually manages to pull out more out of dark areas and more color out of skies. Sometimes it even bumps the contrast a little more (2nd picture brick wall color seems a little washed). Maybe I was trying to find the pattern so it was easier but it is really impressive for a phone camera to do that..

    Great video, the phone is very close to the A7III in color. However this was a very one sided comparison as all of your tests were static shots. Add a bit more motion to the shots and the comparison would be much more obvious. I do understand that you did this test to demonstrate how similar the color is for static shots but most people aren't going to take static shots with video like this. Once you add motion the Note 9 will compress it, from what I believe, much worse than what the A7III would do. You can sort of tell in the first few shots where there's motion that there's noticeable blocking and tearing from the Note 9. There is some flickering from the Note 9 from auto exposure/compensation which instantly set it apart from the A7III in a few of the shots. Again great comparison of color, but as always, quality in normal usage will be worse from the phone. I'm really impressed with the Note 9's capabilities in this video, both color and sharpness! I was surprised when you compared the text on the trash can in the 3rd from last shot.

    It's all about the bitrate. Even though both might shoot 4k, phones just can't push as much data to each file as a dedicated camera. It's still the best PHONE camera on the market though.

    The first half of the video which showcases only the Note 9 has a ton of motion including car chase scenes and walking shots which if I would have shot in Manual using Filmic Pro with a higher bitrate it would give me even better quality.

    Now, I've watched this on my 4k monitor, and here the differences ar fairly easy to spot. I don't like the look of the note 9 because It oversharpens a lot also you can clearly make out the difference in Sensorsize by the shallow depth of field the a7 produces at the dumbster, I personally don't like the HDR of the Note nine... I prefer the more realistic looking image of the sony a7... If I could choose...I'd definitly get the a7 III !

    I couldn't tell any of them apart, very impressive results from the Note 9. These are perfect conditions though, bright sunlight. It's the more challenging situations where the Sony should be much better. Would like to see some sunset or twilight comparisons.

    @@BigBoss-gb4cx lol, a phone camera cannot beat a full frame mirror less camera just yet. But, it will be able to very soon. (Next 3-5 years). Just like how a Google pixel 2 takes the best photos with an inferior lens vs most other flagship smartphones, software processing of photos will come to an insane point where it can literally imitate a perfect photo shot from a full frame mirror less camera.

  • @anugrahajendran750

    Big Boss bigger sensor is always better than smaller sensor. Yes, software processing gives many flagships an edge over DSLRs. But you should know that these same software processing can be implemented on DSLRs if the manufacturers wanted to. They are just not doing it yet because of obvious reasons. Doesn't mean they won't. The gap in quality due to physical and hardware differences will always be there. Googles pixel takes best pictures due to its computational photography algorithms. It can't be achieved with manual mode on smartphones just as much as a professional camera.

  • @syk9855

    @syk9855

    @@anugrahajendran750 the camera manufacturers are still living in the old age. They don't understand that smartphones are creeping and catching up in quality. In the next 3-5years, smartphones will 100% be just as good as a DSLR if not better at this rate and it will be too late for camera manufacturers to implement the software. Who will carry a huge dslr when you can have just a phone where you can edit straight from it as well?
