The Galaxy A53 5G’s large screen, high refresh rate, versatile camera and long battery life make it a great value at $450. Yet there are moments when its price shows, such as when the software occasionally lags or the screen becomes harder to see in bright sunlight. But overall, the Galaxy A53 5G gets a thumbs-up for the balance of features it offers for the price.

I have always purchased flagship phones for the build quality, even though I'm not a power user. I wanted something new and didn't want to spend $1k. Wanted to see if I could "survive" with a lower end device. Saw the unlocked A53 at BestBuy for $349.00 USD and I had a $110.00 BB credit. For the money, I'm pretty impressed. Good feel considering its mostly plastic, bright, smooth display, usable cameras (macro camera is fun), finger and face unlock work well, stereo speakers are good, expandable storage, plays Genshin Impact well enough for me, Android 12 and four years of updates. For $349.00, it's a heck of a device. It even makes and receives phone calls! Whouda guessed!?

@@davewylie654 vs the s10+? I'm not real sure. It's pretty good. The 64mp mode where it takes a few seconds to process all the pixels to turn them onto a really high resolution picture gives you a resolution of 6936x9248. I've not tested how well image processing goes, especially not next to a s10+. It probably takes better pictures though. The camera app is not very smooth when previewing a shot, it's likely due to the preview being so high res, or it might just be that it needs an update or something. The phone hasn't been giving me much issues yet, I've had it for a day. Some games aren't optimized for it so they might not play well. I presume the battery life is good, I say that because I've not owned the phone long enough for android to optimize battery life, it needs to learn usage patterns for a while and then it will be able to put apps you don't use into deep sleep and or limit their cpu and ram usage, giving you better battery life. I would recommend setting the display to 60hz for normal usage to save battery as well.

A lot nitpicking for a midrange phone. Honestly, they packed a lot for a midrange. People that get these phones don't care about the snappiness, photo quality and max brightness. They get the phone to get basic smartphone needs day to day.

It's certainly not a step down from the S22 if you value storage space: the "flagships" all lack expandable memory. Hard to justify losing such a feature when micro-SD is such a small form factor.

I'd be willing to bet an annoyance backup 'feature' is in the works ala iphones where you get a certain amount free backup storage and then pay monthly for progressively more backup storage. Has anyone ever tried to copy files off of an iphone manually? It's next to impossible. I've heard of iphone users constantly running out of storage because of all the videos they take. What most people don't realize is this stops email (and possibly other apps) cold until storage space is freed up. Or, more backup storage is purchased with a monthly charge. This, IMHO, just makes digital hoarders of anyone with this type of piracy, excuse me 'feature'.

I received my Samsung A53 phone one day after it was released. I've had it about a month now. The only negative I have is that the battery, even at 5,000 milliamps, still doesn't last all day under reasonable use. I was spoiled by the Moto g power series phones I've had before, with their battery would last almost 3 days. So automatically having a larger battery, does not mean automatically receiving a lot longer play time. But the positive is, the previous phones I've had, from Motorola, and nord oneplus, with 5G capabilities. They did not pick up the higher spectrum of 5G, on T-Mobile. So the best download speeds I would get were less than 100 megabits. This new phone. Used in the same areas. Has achieved downloads of over 330 megabits. I have another sim card in my Nord OnePlus phone, and even side by side using the same T-Mobile network. This Samsung a53, downloads a lot faster. To save battery I've just defaulted to 60 MHz refresh rate, and don't really notice the difference.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm reading this and I'm just like "you can get more than 100 mb download speeds?? you were able to get 3 days of battery?" then you mentioned playing on the phone and now I'm questioning what you mean by like, "reasonable use" do u mean like, checking social media, and listening to spotify, or do you mean playing a game for an hour or so? I'm just curious, I'm not really like... a phonephile, so I don't really like, know much about phones nor really care, but I'm just shocked and confused

I've been using my A53 for almost 2 weeks now and it's been pretty decent. I bought it straight from Samsung's web store which had an offer which bundles the Galaxy Buds Live ($169) for free which offsets the lack of a headphone jack. I do most of my serious music listening on my PC with a DAC and IEMs anyway, but the buds sound surprisingly good for what they are. It doesn't come with a wall adapter, but I already have some, you have to remember that's part of what makes it cheaper. On the surface it might look like a downgrade to some people, but if you have ways to offset them then what you're left with is a good phone. I've had nothing but bad experiences with Samsung products but this might be the first decent one.

I am a blind user, so use TalkBack, and navigate the phone through explore by touch, moving the finger over the screen to get to a desired icon. Then double-tap the icon to execute. Since I got the phone on Monday, I have noticed the lag, sometimes. The unit has gone through a software update already, plus a TalkBack update. I would like to see stronger vibration intensity feedback, which would help in the explore by touch navigation. This would be like crisping up a blurry screen for those who are sighted. The only thing I do with the camera is take selfies and regular pics for sharing, so not worried about the finer details of photography. The dual speakers are amazing, and do wonderful things for my KZread playlists. I have over 100 apps on my phone, but let the app tray do all the work of organizing, by sorting alphabetically, and that's where I spend my Navigation time. I use the 5 by 6 grid, and don't allow apps to download on the homescreen. The main thing I have there is a time/weather widget, so I use it mostly as a landing page, with docking icons of phone, messages, browser, Gmail, and I moved the Settings icon into that last slot. I simply swipe up with two fingers to get to the apps pages. Reading Kindle books is wonderful on this device, and I like the smaller width to fit my hand, (3 inces across). I did forget to say above, that this device, like all other Android devices now, can have TalkBack load at the first unboxing, so a blind person can set up the phone independent of sighted assistance. I don't prefer many of the Samsung apps, preferring Google and others, but I must say, samsung is doing a great job in upgrading its TTS engines, and, hopefully, the 3.1.02.95 TTS version will upgrade to the --97 soon. This all depends on if the phone you get is unlocked, the region where you live, and your carrier. Anyway, a great phone, and I got myself a rose gold floating crystal bling case for a fun touch. This is, indeed, a great phone.

It's a mid-range phone that can be bought for $330 or as low as $250 right now depending where you look. I think when some of these reviewers see the big bright 120 hz display, and large camera cluster, it's easy to compare it to the flagship phones. But it's not a speedy flagship with ridiculously good cameras like the S22 Ultra... it is however a great midrange phone. The camera hardware is excellent but the software is tuned a bit saturated. The battery is excellent, and even powering the screen at 120 hz it still does well. The processor is not a speed demon, but again, this is not meant to be a $1200+ flagship unit. If speed is your thing, a new iPhone or S22 Ultra is where to look, but it will also cost you much more.

I've had it for a little over two weeks now and I have to say the exynos 1280 seriously sucks. It has serious stutters while gaming and and there's even screen lag. The battery is solid, but if you already have the Samsung A52 5G, your better off with that phone. I want to say it out performs the A53 5G in daily usage, benchmarks dont always tell the whole story. I'll be sending this phone back this week.....its been a complete disappointment for me.

Agreed. I have the S21 FE now and have just decided to "downgrade" to the A53. Cost me quite a bit to pay it off so quickly, but there was no way I could deal with that battery one more day. I literally had to keep it on a charger at least once during the day because it couldn't even handle checking a few emails and doing some audio streaming for a couple hours. It's hard to believe it's a 4500 in that phone because it drains faster than anything I've ever seen. I'm constantly checking to see what is using the battery, and there's never any particular app that's using an unusual amount of power. That phone and processor just have terrible power management.

Fun fact, the iPhone 5S from 2013 genuinely has a higher max brightness than the 2021 Moto G Stylus. Moto claims 450 nits but I absolutely think it's even lower. It looks as bright as my old LG K20 at 280 nits. I have no clue how they could launch a $299 phone with a screen that's genuinely unusable in sunlight.

120hz takes more processing power (and energy) than bumping the refresh rate down. That's just physics and how computer processing works. The same goes for bumping down the screen resolution. You get more of a performance boost and a longer battery life 🙂 For those of us who don't play games, the downclocked frequencies on the more efficient 5nm platforms are ideal. It's plenty fast enough to do video processing and the essentials while making extra use of that battery for things like video recording and Google Maps. 🤳 For most, stereo speakers are important and when bought used, this phone delivers well enough on the essentials while being a viable alternative to those on budgets. 🌳

To wake the new phone you have to go up the side of the phone to the power button to wake up phone,,, on the J3 there is a simple button at bottom middle which you can do easily no matter where you are in relative relation to phone . No telephoto lens? The camera has 10X zoom and takes great pics from a distance. As far as no headphone jack? My cheap earbuds work great. I don't like wires hanging around my face. Also, I use blue tooth headphones.

But the zoom is a digital zoom, what's lacking is an optical zoom which would not reduce picture quality at all.

I enjoy using wireless headphones also. 😊 A telephoto lens would be amazing, but it works well enough for my use with a macro lens. The stereo speakers, a tuned down 5nm efficient processor, brighter screen than my Pixel 3A, and at a budget price when buying used, makes this an ideal phone for me, especially for GPS and maps. 😊🌎✨

Great midranger for people who don't need a more powerful phone. But yeah.. The phone should auto boost the brightness in sunlight. Use auto adjust and then finetune it so it remembers your prefered brightness settings. Kinda basic. And why do you complain about it if it gets bright enough to use in direct sunlight anyway? That is all you can expect. And no.. Actually supports 2TB external.. Basicly been standard since the LG G3... Just not easy to find 2TB cards😅

she didn't even highlight the IP67 rating for this phone. it's actually a plus point for a midrange device.

@@francisanthonygo8344 It's pretty standard today in midrangers and up with IP67 or 68 ratings
