SAMSON LONG CAST EXPANSE LS | LURE FISHING FOR BASS & MACKEREL

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Samson Long Cast Expanse LS is a 12ft rod designed to cast lures from 15-60g. It's the lightest version of the Samson Fishing range of rods and is a joy to use in UK waters for bass, mackerel, pollock etc. This rod is designed to work surface lures with ease and also hit maximum distance when fishing against strong winds or when you need to target certain areas of ground at range. Having used the heavier, 30-100g Long Cast, I was excited to fish with this lighter version on my home turf in Guernsey.
This video includes a couple of sessions I've had so far whilst out and about with the rod when I was targeting mackerel on metals and bass on lures.
Check out the video and let me know in the comments if you've also used this rod, or any in the Samson range and your thoughts on them. As always, thanks for watching and see you on the next one 🎣

    Hey Cal. I started sea fishing only two months go after winning a rod and reel. I was looking for a retirement hobby when this happened. So I bought some 42gm metal lures and my first fish was a 6.5lb bass at Scarborough. I’m well chuffed.

    I really wanted to get this rod in the travel version as I’m limited to bike travel. Sadly it only comes in the heavy 30-100g though which seems far too limiting to me. Hopefully they bring out a travel rod in the lighter version!

    I’ve got that Samson Expanse LS. It’s a great rod for throwing weighted mackerel feathers and heavier work but I do find it a bit of brutish scaffolding pole. Quite heavy for long sessions and not much sensitivity for keeping in touch with the lure. I suspect they beefed it up for dead lifting fish out the water. Certainly a great rod but needs to be for the right type of fishing. 12’ is a great length but for casting 20-40g lures I have an 11’ Hardy Demon spinning rod which gains in lightness and sensitivity what it loses in strength. Horses for courses.

    No I think you’re right mate. I agree with what you’ve said. I think they have beefed it up for a lure rod yeah. Obviously you can find lure rods around the same length and they’ll feel lighter and be easier to use on long sessions. Working heavy topwater lures with this rod can take it out of your arms after a while (and I’m certainly not a big guy 😂) I think it will depend on what you’re using it for. For me, it’s for when the wind is howling and I need that extra beef to fish through it. Having said that, I’ve also used the heavier version of the rod on flat calm days too. It’s great for distance, hence the name obviously. As far as the sensitivity goes, when working heavier surface lures I can’t fault it. When using lures at the lighter end of the scale yes, you do lose a bit.

    Nice Bass there Cal but some really serious ankle breaking territory to negotiate before you can start fishing. Enjoyed the video, great bit of action taking that fish.

    Thanks mate. Yeah it was a big tide that day so all of that ground was uncovered. It can be tricky getting over those rocks, could’ve done with some studs really.

  • @FISHINGWITHCAL

    @FISHINGWITHCAL

    Thanks mate that means a lot! No I still use 20lb braid on the reel for this rod. I use 20lb for pretty much all my bass fishing.

    I use that rod in a similar way to catch mackerel but I attach feathers and use a 40g metal lure as a weight. The rod makes the difference I think. I've been spinning next to other chaps and caught mackerel, whereas they blanked with a beach caster and 3oz lead. I was easily getting an extra 30yds which is where the mackies were. Also caught my pb bass on the rod so will never use anything else now.😅😅

    That’s awesome mate! Yeah a heavier metal at the end of some feathers can be really productive. Good if you’re fishing over kelp in deep water too as you’ll have the chance of picking up a pollock also.

    Love the videos, got me hooked. Order myself a penn regiment 15'-56g rod and a spin fisher vi 4500 to get me started. Looking to do a little bass fishing, some squiding and flick of a boat. What line do you recommend. Assuming braid x8 strand. Not sure on Lb. Any advice much appreciated.

    Hi mate. That’s a nice set up to get you started. I use 20lb braid. The braid I’m using at the moment is from samson fishing but before that I was using daiwa j braid which I liked. I use anything from 15-26lb for bass fishing. Most of the time I’ll use 20lb which is ideal.
