Samson François | Frédéric Chopin: Piano Concerto in E minor, Op 11

Музыка

This is, in my opinion, one of the most magical and spellbinding recordings of this concerto. Piano and orchestra are in perfect balance. The lightness of Samson's touch, the sense of freedom he conveys and the perfect balance between piano and orchestra result in an inspired and imaginative performance.

His playing is very elegant, especially in the ornaments and cadenzas. It is improvisational, and his individuality is well expressed, but that elegance is sometimes eloquent and egoistic, sometimes tolerant, and sometimes sensitive, and has a sexiness that seems to sum up the romanticism of a man.

Well that was a unique performance and as different to everybody else as I’ve ever heard. His choices of tempi (which varied elastically) were intriguing. I especially enjoyed the end of the rondo that tripped along jauntily rather than the common breakneck speed we hear often. I’m going to have to listen a few more times to wrap my ears around it !

Thank you so much for posting this! I've tried a couple times to "get into" Francois's Chopin as I love his Ravel, though without much success. Your post persuaded me to try again, and I'm glad I did. I'd forgotten that Chopin could be played with such style, personality, and grandeur. Truly Francois's Chopin is of a different time recalling Rachmaninoff and Hofmann where already such playing was falling out of style with a new generation of pianist like Pollini, Argerich, Ashkenazi, Cliburn, and the like popping on the scene.

Thank you for this rare VDO. One of the most elegant versions of this famous concerto. However, personally, the interpretations of Zimerman, Lipatti are the two I like the most. For the listeners who don't mind some wrong notes, the playing of Annie Fischer was also having full musicality, IMHO.

3 minutes into this video, and I'm really loving this footage already. I heard Francois's recording of Chopin Etude Op. 25 No. 1 which was impeccable. The clarity of his notes was unlike any of the others in the 20 soloist comparison, so I had to hear more of him, so here I am. I wonder what's the reason for the camera under the keyboard and not above it? That's different. When I see videos like this, it gives me another level of appreciation for the Charlotte, NC Youth Symphony when I was a senior in high school as Principal Clarinet. I'm grateful to have also had the opportunity to study piano, and I do really enjoy the International Chopin Competitions, especially Kate Lieu's final Concert where she received an emotionally riveted standing ovation. I'm excited to hear Samson's performance too, who is way more conservatively composed as opposed to Kate Lieu who seemed to bounce with the beat at she finished the piece; however Samson Francois's performance was very very tasteful and delightful. He's very good.

It is a version that will delight the proponents of an elegant and delicate Chopin. Personally I prefer a more energetic and passionate version such as those of Martha Argerich and which are no less poetic.
