I have a interior door I want to stain. I am not sure what type of wood it is. It currently has a dark stain. I am unsure of how much prep I need to do. Do you think I need to strip it all down? or just a good sanding. I am interested in using the voodoo gel stain and I want the door to be lighter, either like a white oak look or a beach wood look. You can just paint is a very good product. Brandy said is reformulated. I can way to try it😀

If you’re staining over another wood finish, do you need to sand down first? Or scuff the service?

You can use gel stain over an existing finish, not penetrating stain though

I have 2 questions: 1. If I have a chair that was already Stained and I began to sand it to start fresh with a new stain and unfortunately sanded some areas way too much, will the gel stains cover all areas evenly or do I need to sand the entire chair completely to get an even color? 2. What separates this gel stain from just using paint? Do they actually look like stain or do they look like full coverage paint? I really like the look of Stained wood so I don't want to have to end up painting my chairs just because I sanded them too much.

You can layer gel stain to get opaque coverage, would take 3-4 coats to not see any variation from underneath

@@BrushedbyBrandy thank you, so if I were to layer it to an opaque level, will it still look like a stain or does it defeat the purpose. would I be better off just buying a brown paint if I had to coat it that much?

Was stripped to bare wood

Used the DB gel stain tonight on a table top and first coat is blotchy. Sanded down well and cleaned before and after. The stain is sinking into the woods showing all kinds of irregularities that I thought didn’t happen with the gel stain. Thought it sat on top more and was to be used in a situation with more of an imperfect top. Help.

Gel stain only penetrates top layer of the wood. Irregularities can be emphasized. To get opaque, and cover damage, you need to build up coverage with 2-3 coats

Brushed by Brandy thanks for replying. I’m not understanding “gel stain pentwater the top layer of wood”??? Is this conditioning the wood? Some areas are almost black and some wiped off. The table looks like a cow pattern. Not sure how to fix.

@@natalieramsey4091 corrected last comment, auto correct. Gel stain goes on more like a paint, penetrates more shallow than a peneteating stain. If you want thicker opaque coverage, brush on and let it dry rather than wiping back

No pain gel stain is oil based so it does have a normal wood stain odor. Voodoo gel stain is water based and no/low odor if you are more sensitive it may be a better choice

What prep should be done other than white lightning for using the stain over a kitchen cabinet that's a traditional wood ,that regular yellow wood color ☺️. I don't know the wood name myself either 😂
