Sample Test - Cambridge Audio CXA61 integrated amplifier

Ғылым және технология

We have received the brand new Cambridge Audio CXA61 integrated amplifier. It's more than an integrated amp though. There is also a dac on board! So we test the analog inputs with our Metrum Acoustics Pavane and compare it the integrated dac. This way we know how capable the amp ánd the dac are.
Samples are made with:
- DPA 4015A microphones
- Grace Design M108
- Grimm Cables
- Vmix - Lossless recording

I been using the CXA81 now for over a year. I’m and have been trying various intergrated amps from $ 1500 - $5000 for comparison. I’m always impressed with its performance. Also the DAC is surprisingly good.

What other amps have you compared and what is the biggest difference? I tend to favor stage depth, good separation and sibilance/glare control. Some amps are too energetic in the upper mids and it seems to bother me. I might prefer a smoother sound to an overly lively one as I use speakers that are typically considered on the brighter side, ex Focal, Dali, Triangle. Any info appreciated.

I have this CX61 together with LS50 original speakers (the little difference between those and the new Meta is not worth the more money for me) speakercable Audioqauest Rocket 11 and a subwoofer SVS 1000 Pro and this is heaven for me. It sounds even better than a few numbers her above.

You get the sound of your dac thru the amp via rca/xlr outputs of your dac. If your source player has digital outputs (coax/optical out) in addition to RCA/XLR, you can compare the differences between an external dac and the one in the amp, plug output from source to the digital input of the dac in the amp.

@@user-pd7zi3sf3o I like my hegel h160 and its internal dac (competes with those around $1000 US or so in SQ but can't do high resolution streaming via usb). But if you listen to more budget speakers at moderate volumes, less powerful amps can come close in performance, not all but some like my small Keces E40 does very well until you turn up the volume to loud levels, it can run out of steam sooner. The Hegel has lots of power on tap and lower distortion levels, but the Keces isn't too far behind in performance (within its power limits) and provides more bottom end on small cones while remaining tight due to added db output per its frequency curve. You get a bit of boost but it remains tight and layered. No other amp I have seen does that. By distortion, its better than a rega IO or BRIO. The CXA81 has a decent distortion rating so I expect the CXA61 to be up there as well, just a bit less than the Keces E40 I have. Which would sound better? I don't know. If you have floorstanding speakers, or standmounts that are hard to drive and like high damping, a Hegel or similarly quality amp may be the way to go. Otherwise, alot of smaller, lighter amps do just fine, even a Rega IO/Brio, etc will sound great. Many of these British amps do have their own sound so unless you compare, its hard to describe any differences outside of reviews or others' opinions. Also depends on room, source, dac, etc. But the CXA61 seems a capable performer with alot of inputs, a dac and a sub out. I like that the power cord isn't attached too.

Hello team AlphaAudio, I really do appreciate when you test affordable HIFI, and thank you for making this test available. I though the Cambridge sounded decent with the Jacques Loussier track, but the whole thing fell apart with the Adele song - terrible. The sound of Adele voice was like if she was singing out of her nose, and the guitar strings, symbols sounded buzzy, thin, and unnatural. I went back and listened to your M33 and Yamaha S2200 review/test and the whole Adele song sounded much, much better through both setups. I have no doubt that your recording setup of the Cambridge was accurate, but would it be the internal DAC of the CXA 61 that is the weak link here? Would there be any possibility of redoing this test using the Metrum DAC as source and go back between Metrum and Cambridge internal DAC or maybe test it agains a Hegel H95 or Parasound Newclassic 200? It would be interesting to hear what a better DAC could do with Cambridge. Take care and stay safe, Brian

You have got this done in this video above - read the yellow background with white writeings. Once its playing Metrum and next Cambridge DAC. Sopras are hi-end speakers and easly shows every bit of a flaws from CXA61. They deserve much better company than a Cambridge. Dont know how about the Edge amp.

@@sheerenergy8602 Hello Sheer, thank you for pointing this out and it’s twice now I get caught not looking at the tags. I normally only listened to the test so not to be influenced by the visuals. I would do terrible in a double blind test. Re-listening again ... it’s the whole Cambridge setup that affecting the musical performance and not just the DAC as I originally thought. Now being influenced by what I see and hear the Metrum brings some improvements, but not 4K worth. So the Cambridge CXA61 at 1.4k is maybe good value for the money? It Would be interesting to hear the Cambridge against other integrated amps at similar price point. Thanks again, Brian

@@frostycanada6404 That CXA61 is a bit wierd amp, its upper midrange is kina a pushy and sound isnt enough analitical as a higher class standard, so its sound as you hear. And about blind tests, its not reliable cause humans are easy to get mistaken. The best method is simply listening for 2 weeks or more and change to a cheaper element - and you know you dont want to give it back. In blind test you can mistake for instance a 1k$ amp with 7k$ amp with several switches it's easy to get confuse. And always do testing on your system in your room- its most reliable than. Yamaha A-S1200/ 2200 is much more analitical and also pushy in upper midrange, but sounded much better to my ears.

Integrated internal run-of-the-mill sabre chip vs $5000 external NOS DAC, LOL. That's fair. Hahahahahaha. 😂 Too bad Schiit is the only company producing R2R amps. These companies need to actually spend time putting together a decent DAC for once in their life, which means spending the cash to produce an R2R/NOS chip. Stop buying the same dumb sabre chip. What are these bells and whistles worth if the end result is poor? Result of this vid: the DAC in these things sucks, buy external. ):
