the way havoc comes In on the 2nd verse always has me stank faced
I learned particularly, that this wasn't a flip of a sample of some long-gone 1920s-1950s dark piano song that it was just more of a matter of slowing it all down. Wow. Whoever caught this one was damn good.

The person who found it was actually on spotify looking for samples for his own beats. Before that, he pitched Survival of the fittest to what he thought was the original pitch of the sample. Soon as he came across this sample, he immediately recognized it, then pitched it down accordingly.

Using it IS flipping it.
One of the sickest sample loops in Hip-Hop history. Havoc was on some other shit when he came up with this one. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Truly. I think the best sample flip of alltime tbh. It epitomizes that dark gangster rap golden age of the 90s, boom bap, piano samples. It's a landmark
I went down the rabbit hole of this channel and this is the most impressive and mind-blowing sample flip. So simple yet profound.

One of the most recognizable and iconic sample flips in hiphops history....i actually thought as a teenager, this is how it was actually played - not realizing it was pitched and slowed right down 🤣😅 riL Bandana-P

A phenomenal educator too
The most impressive thing here is where Havoc starts this loop, it's not on the 1 as you might think, the 1 is also not at the beginning of the sample as one would have thought. Very unusual, maybe it was because of heavy experimenting.

Idk if this was a common thing in hip hop sampling, but I was watching this interview with TokiMonsta of all people and how she finds samples. She will just take the needle and drop it in random places, slow it down, change the speed up, drop it again. totally random but that completely changes how the ear perceives. From there you can hear things that you would NEVER have heard before just listening to the song straight. They also may have just been smoking and playing back records really slowly and discovered this that way. Either way, it is truly one of the exemplars of sampling. my favorite flip of all time without a doubt
Even tho the transition is so simple, every time i watch this video, i get chills from something so silky and smooth sounding getting slowed down into one of the darkest sounding rap instrumentals ever made
You gotta remember that Havoc was like 18 or 19 when he made this and Shook Ones. This is an incredible ear and flip.
Amazing how he made one of the sickest beats ever! It seems so simple but it's pure genius!!
It impress me how a simple fix on pitch and tempo can work for a whole different song.
This is gold! Thank you for this visualization, I finally understand the construction of the sample. Its brilliant that the second part of the beat is actually the first part of the original sample.
@Nickpetronio

I was surprised by that too and thought it was really cool. I figured he chopped it up a bit and played it that way. A simple little loop, but pitching it down and the way the second part is the first made all the difference. Havoc is fantastic
that’s some of the best sampling work ever. super out of the box shit
This is my favourite track of all time. I remember when the album first came out and I didn't stop listening to this track. It still sounds as good as it did nearly 30 years ago.

Wow
How did he have this track and this tiny snippet of the track in his arsenal? And how'd he know that slowing down one tiny piece of it, perhaps not even more than 2 bars, would have this outcome. Wow.
can someone explain to me how he could take a sample thats that low in bpm, make it even slower and get it to match a higher bpm ? im very curious i love this technique
