I heard that when he was offered the song, Sammy did not want to do it. The songwriters said if you sing this, it will be the biggest hit you ever have! They were right!

Davis himself disliked it, telling his manager “It’s horrible. It’s a timmy-two-shoes, it’s white bread, cute-ums, there’s no romance. Blechhh!” After hastily recording it in two takes at a studio session, he also reportedly said “This record is going straight into the toilet. Not just around the rim but into the bowl, and it may just pull my whole career down with it.

I noticed one thing surprising, in that I saw old people in the audience getting into the song. You would probably not see this much today since almost everyone over 30 hates the music of today, and many people younger than 30 hate it too.

@@ericwitt4359Oh sorry, thought you were being serious. "Music of today" includes much better examples than Cardi B. Perhaps expand your horizons? She is hardly the Sammy Davis Jr. of her time. I would think something more like Beyonce? Bruno Mars? Miley Cyrus. You definitely would see folks over 30 into those acts. And under. Those are even arguably vapid depending on your taste. But I think maybe you just were blowing off steam with the post, which is fine. C'est la vie, say the old folks...

@@ericwitt4359 Sorry for the double post... like I was saying, I mean, Cardi B no doubt is a flash in the pan. An interesting thing about what you are saying, and the reason it got me thinking--those older folks would have been into the Rat Pack when they were *hot*. I mean, when they were the biggest thing in the world. This would have been much later in Sammy's career. I mean, in '71 or '72 he was kind of considered "music the old people" would have been into. Which is to say, jazz and big band kind of backings weren't exactly hip then, you know? But this was a huge song because of its inclusion in "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory," which is why you can also see so many people under 30 ("kids") into it. I was trying to think of something today that would stretch that sort of divide. I was thinking maybe like the way some parent/kids are into ABBA or Glee. Or maybe Queen? It's pretty hard to think of examples. Even Nirvana, a lot of younger teens seem to be getting into them as a "classic rock" band, which sort of blows my mind. But of course, that would not really be "music of today."

@@HipsterEatinShark You asked for an example and I gave you one. That sounds pretty stupid to suppose that Cardi B would be the only person I know. And yes, I know Bruno Mars (who is an exception) and like him and am over 30. However I don't think that many people in their 40s or 50s go to a concert of his.And almost definitely you don't see people of that age going to see Miley Cyrus or Beyonce.
