I recently watched a documentary on Frank Sinatra in which he said Sammy Davis, Jr was the “most talented” member of The Rat Pack. And at that time I don’t recall him playing the drums OR piano. He was simply amazing....an all around showman.

Sammy Davis Jr. was the ultimate entertainer. He was a showman, and a master at everything. I don't think there will be anyone else like him. If he was born in today's times, he would be the ultimate rock star. I coudl see it in his motions and facial expressions.

Good chance of that. I’d agree he was the best entertainer! He was black though, in those days unfortunately black people weren’t going to steal the light from the white folks. I will say he was LUCKY to have Frank and Dean on his side. And that sh*t still goes on today. We just went through 5yrs of more racial injustice

@@robsmalls9656 I agree. Yes, Sammy is talented, but better than Blakely or Rich? Not a chance. I have been a drummer for over forty five years and I know how simple it is to drum with basic skills and sound great. The hard part is drumming to complicated music styles in sync with the rest of the band. Like The Who or Rush, or Genesis, or The Buddy Rich Orchestra, or many other of the best of the best bands and musicians. Sammy was an amazing entertainer, of that there is no doubt. But one of the best drummers, I don't think so. He is good though.

Two entertainers who were also talented jazz drummers that few know about are Bobby Darin (a multi-instrumentalist) and pop singer Bobby Rydell (Don't laugh, Rydell sold millions of records. People forget that fact). Rydell was a drummer before he started singing. I knew Davis could play drums and it's great that there's a good clip of Sam doing it. Many entertainers back in the day could do many wonderful things besides what they were famous for. Even talk show host Johnny Carson was a pretty good drummer.

My friends grew up in Palm Springs and as kids there they had to hitchhike quite often. Who else would pick them up real quick Sammy Davis Junior as well as if it was Elvis when stick them up to but that's another story. Sammy was so kind. He gave them each a hundred dollar bill and told them to spend it all in one place as he dropped them off at the garage where they played punk rock. Je had an appt. but said he would come back to give them a listen. I like to imagine him outside their broken down garage "grooving" to what the kids were vibing.

Even today directors, editors & camera operators don't know how to film musicians. Why would we want a close up of their face when they are working their heart out & displaying their skills, that have taken years to hone? So much music history has been lost due to poor camera work.

"Some of the best musicians in the world are people that nobody ever heard of". Jo Jones told me that around '71 [That was THE PAPA JO JONES ...]. He was right ... For me, after a certain level of proficiency, it all comes down to - TASTE, room for everybody, and EVERYBODY HAS SOMETHING TO SAY ... Babe Ruth, known for holding that ONE ALL - TIME RECORD for so long, I read some time ago, that Ruth also held the ALL - TIME RECORD for the most strike outs!!! True or false - I don't care - Because what I took from that is this: WHEN BABY RUTH SHOWED UP TO THE BALL PARK, HE CAME TO PLAY ... there was no such thing as a bad day, a bad pitch, or what have you ... It was all good, a fine way to live ones life I think. I saw Sammy Davis Jr., on the ole Ed Sullivan Show way back ... He did sing, dance, nor tell some jokes ... rather demonstrated HOW HE WON THE NATIONAL QUICK-DRAW CHAMPIONSHIP for the second year in a row! He ramaing (for me) in a class by himself. Many thanks for sharing, and thank you all for your wonderful comments.
