I'm a Lions fan from Iowa so you can imagine how excited I was when the Lions drafted him. Laporta was the one bright spot in the putrid Iowa offense. I knew that if he was on a competent NFL offense he would crush it.

The best schematic football coaches in the country coach high school or small college ball. The NFL is mostly nepotism. You make very little money as an assistant coach non coordinator. A high school coach makes enough to support a family of 4, pension, health insurance, and the better they are the higher their stipends get on top of their teaching salary

I don’t remember the 2pt conversion with that play where Laporta ‘falls’…? I do remember though that play was used- fake to Montgomery and then TD pass to a wide open Laporta- to get the first Touchdown in Week 18 vs PIS last season. I honestly wasn’t sure at time if the hiccup fall was part of play 😏, or if he actually fell and it was an advantageous moment.

Great illustration of his strength and toughness. I nearly included that play. Had it in the editing program, just never included it. Tough hit over the middle left the Lions about 6 yards short of the 1st down with one down to go, I think. What I do know is that LaPorta popped right up and the ILB needed to be helped up, because he was on bad legs.

Thanks again for another outstanding analysis. As a +50 year Lions fan, LaPorta brings back memories of Charlie Sanders who was also a fantastic receiving TE for Detroit. Although I have to admit that I am not sure that Charlie could block as well as LaPorta. Charlie was active in the seventies and made the HoF. I can see Sam on that same path. And to think I was not initially a fan of the pick.

Thank You Coach! Another quality video. As to the chat please pardon my incomplete comment as I was unprepared for the chat format; never done that before. Mostly I wanted to acknowledge and echo your comments on the versatility of Sam LaPorta as truely unique. Having grown up a Lions fan I cannot speak to your basketball comparisons so much as memories of All Pro TE Charlie Sanders & David Hill ...Detroit fans have had few truly talented TE to cheer for in my time and yes LaPorta has the ability to exceed both those players. Also too many TE in the modern game are only one dimensional and drawing comparisons to TE Kellen Winslow who was essentially a large slot receiver in the Air Coryell offense in San Diego. So few players today who line up at TE can block and play receiver as well as LaPorta!

Laporta and Hutchenson are the last two max contract players the Lions will give out for players they have now. It's just too hard to find and develop tight ends that are top 5 at their position. Laporta and ARSB can cause matchup problems because of who other teams put on them for coverages. The only teams that seem remotely successful vs them are ones with very athletic linebackers. Fact is most teams just don't have the player types to slow them down.
