In today's editing tutorial, we'll be learning a really cool 'through the floor effect' transition that Sam Kolder used in his 'KOLD - Creative Process' short film. It's in a variety of other KZreadr filmmakers shorts like Seoul Wave by Brandon Li, and even a Hollywood classic like Fight Club by David Fincher. Editing this foreground wipe may take some time to master, but it's a unique editing trick to know how to do.

Thank you for your beautiful explanation. I have a question How do I go from one scene to another through the window, I want to shoot a single take scene The camera moves from the hall to the room through the window. Do you have a video explaining this?
@dylanjohndickerson

Thanks so much! You could have someone on the other side of the window that grabs the camera and continues the journey.
The effect was also used in Eminems Stan video, that's where I first saw it

Haha well thanks man! Glad you think so 😊
wow im overwhelmed. i really wanna do this effect, but the whole gimbal movement thing is tripping me out. I want to transition through 3 floors one after another, but not sure what I should do with the gimbal part... (not great at using my ronin yet lol) Do i just go from the top of the roof until the bottom of the floor?
@dylanjohndickerson
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! Sorry for the late reply. Yep! Follow the instructions in the video as best as possible. Start from the top and go to the floor as low as you can go. I don’t know what editing software you’re using, but if it’s Final Cut Pro, you could get the plugin mShade which is a transition that will make it look like you’re going through floors, etc.
@MendelDanzo
2 жыл бұрын
@@dylanjohndickerson yey im using FCPX, mShade looks sweet, only issue is, I ain't chill paying 70$ for one shot that i need in particular lol. i guess i just have to get better at masking... (sigh) thanks for those free plugins tho, really like the vertigo effect but its practically impossible if you have a fixed lens like me, and im nuts over anamorphic flares, so the more, the merrier!
@dylanjohndickerson
2 жыл бұрын
@@MendelDanzo Totally understandable! I think you'd end up using it more than once, but ya I can definitely see it being a waste of money if you're just using it for one transition. My pleasure with the free plugin video! I enjoyed making it. Well that's the cool thing about the plugin! It makes the vertigo effect for you. Also, you can create the vertigo effect with a prime! Throw your setup on a gimbal and just move forward or backwards in your shot and then in post, digitally scale in or out. That's going to give you pretty much the same look 😊
can i do that without a gimbal?
@dylanjohndickerson
3 жыл бұрын
You can, but it won't look as good. Since the floor won't be shaking like the camera will be shaking, it'll look a little unnatural.
I’m trying to figure out how to do this in a drone video. 🤔
@dylanjohndickerson
2 жыл бұрын
Basically land the drone to get close to the ground and then follow the steps in the vid!
Was this the same transition used in get out? "the sink into the floor scene"

One of my 3 year old videos? Damn! Didn't think this one was still a thing anymore haha. At the time, Sam Kolder came out with a video that was very popular. Hence why I chose to choose a specific person who's used this technique to help search-ability.
