Sam Harris is a neuroscientist, philosopher, and author of five New York Times best sellers. His work covers a wide range of topics-neuroscience, moral philosophy, religion, meditation practice, political polarization, rationality-but generally focuses on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live. His books include The End of Faith, The Moral Landscape, Free Will, Lying, and Waking Up. Sam hosts the popular Making Sense podcast and is the creator of the Waking Up app, which offers a modern approach to living a more examined life, through both in-depth mindfulness training and secular wisdom. Sam has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation teachers, both in the United States and abroad. He holds a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA.

ABOUT THE TEN PERCENT HAPPIER PODCAST
Dan Harris is a fidgety, skeptical journalist who had a panic attack on live national television, which led him to try something he otherwise never would have considered: meditation. He went on to write the bestselling book, 10% Happier. On this show, Dan talks with eminent meditation teachers, top scientists, and even the odd celebrity. Guests include everyone from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Brené Brown to Karamo from Queer Eye. On some episodes, Dan ventures into the deep end of the pool, covering subjects such as enlightenment and psychedelics. On other episodes, it’s science-based techniques for issues such as anxiety, productivity, and relationships. Dan's approach is seemingly modest, but secretly radical: happiness is a skill you can train, just like working your bicep in the gym. Your progress may be incremental at first, but like any good investment, it compounds over time.

Didn't Sam Harris start meditation under Ram Dass? Just wanted to know what does Neem Karoli baba exactly do... What are his teaching and his practice for meditation?

I think he practices brochen. It's a variant of Dzogchen, but with an emphasis on the bro component.

Who bought that Panerai? Who or what ego does it gratify? Sam's or some dissociated alter? Honestly, this whole selflessness talk is just Sam at his most nonsensical. It becomes just gibberish, the same type of word salad that comes from Jordan Peterson or Deepak Chopra

Communicating a description of what it is like to be is certainly doomed to all flavors of word salads. I agree it sounds very similar to JP's gibberish. But I think there's a difference. Sam isn't drawing a connection between insights about consciousness and the overall nature of the universe. He's just talking about what it is like to be conscious through the filter of his brain. But honestly, its like trying to describe any subjective experience. The words have to resonate as a meaningful conceptual pattern to make any sense. And still, you can't ever be certain.

@@tyl3rb3ck LOL, I think one difference is Sam is generally extremely lucid and articulate, whereas with JP it's always gibberish. Sam always cites Douglas Harding, and his "having no head," but having dated a girl with multiple personalities, and thus researching the topic I think Harding, and perhaps Sam, and maybe Buddhists as a group are more suffering from a depersonalization disorder. For which, I think is maybe nice to think means you're "enlightened," but probably not. Douglas Harding's book is a yawner, let me tell ya, lol.

Fascinating topics! It feels like 2 completely different Sams when ideology and bias come into play. I hope he won’t get into how “Israel is the lonely outpost of civilized ethics” and hasn’t “invaded or occupied anything in a long longtime”

I don't think there is anything wrong with the first statement. I would just add the caveat "in the middle east", just to contextualise it. I don't think second statement is true, but neither does Sam imo. In fact, he has even criticised Israelis for their settlement approach. However, one does wonder what other solution one has if not to destroy the terrorist government of Palestine and occupy the region to civilise it? It had become painfully clear Palestinians as they stand today are completely unable to come to terms with existence of Jews, and peace. So, rest of Arab states and the world should help Israel in transition & de-radicalisation of Palestine
