I was really enjoying the initial "Ask Me Anything" segment where the audience participated but felt that Eric Weinstein stole the show during the second half. Eric Weinstein's appearance onstage didn't seem planned. I have nothing against Eric Weinstein but it seems that he invited himself onstage and then the rest of the segment was just a duet conversation between Eric Weinstein and Sam Harris where the audience was mostly left out.

  • @Cyborous

it seems like they planned it. “You said something on the phone I would like to air publicly..” Eric: can I come up? Sam: Sure come on up” it didn’t seem that out of the blue.

@@Cyborous Eric Weinstein's appearance onstage doesn't appear planned and this is why. 1) If Eric Weinstein was planned to be onstage, why didn't Sam Harris say something about Eric Weinstein at his introduction and why didn't they put out a stool ahead of time? 2) If Eric Weinstein was planned to be onstage, why didn't they set him up with a headset mic like Sam Harris? It seems odd to give someone a handheld mic to speak for a lengthy amount of time. 3) If Eric Weinstein was planned to be onstage, why are there three water bottles on the table? If they plan to have two people onstage, an even number of water bottles would make sense but not an odd number.

@@prabhanshurajpoot7419 There definitely is. I've been paying attention to Sam Harris pretty much since he burst on the scene, and he has not been in his best form in recent years. Still insightful, but I feel that fear has started to guide his thinking a bit more. That being said, the side that has started to attack him relentlessly in comment threads is a pretty sad thing to see. It proves that those who listen to such rational and reasonable people like Sam and Bret can so easily be taken by the same foolish tribalism and schadenfreude they so often defame others for.

These kinds of Town Halls or professional panels should be mandated or at least heavily incentivized for anybody participating/living in a community, similar to getting jury duty. It used to be that you only had to provide for the basic needs of a society, such as being a juror or voter, but with the regime change led by tech, there are too many interconnected variables that, even in moments of good faith, can always plummet conversations or any relationship-based activity into chaos, which is why we are seeing such a wild west behavioral culture in politics and all media forms. A randomized selection of citizens to converse with each other in this kind of format with a panel of various experts. Every few months or however long, people should kind of be forced to work together to address the cultural problems that we so-often just place onto our opposition, whoever we perceive them to be at the time. The problem that I see is that there will always be the people that choose to be here, physically or on KZread, trying to develop and there will always be people who just don't care or, more likely imo, don't even think about working towards a better society, and while its great that this stuff is even available, it simply does not provide for those who need it the most. People trying to be better naturally leave the rest in the dust and slowly drag societies forward, it should be the opposite, with those people directly pushing and encouraging the rest to forge the paths themselves knowing we are all here supporting (ultimately we are always superposed between both sides). With the digital world providing everybody with a voice, societies can't depend on people being ignored or dying off, it's kind of an all-or-nothing culture now, so we better work together. I'm probably wrong on how to approach this, but community-driven events that focus on just working together nonpolitically with incentive structures to *literally* include all people in any given community should be a thing and, to my knowledge, there is nothing out there besides these niche versions with people who are already on the "same team"

Eric is that kid who tries to stay over at your house all weekend the very first time he's let into your friend group. I felt embarrassed for Sam after a while. You know he would have preferred Eric gracefully leave the stage after a question or two, but he couldn't humiliate him by hinting at it in front of a crowd. I don't dislike the guy, but I get the impression that Eric could be a tenured professor teaching nine 100-level metaphysics classes a week and still seek an audience for his ramblings.

All of this panic about how people are going to be influenced, ignores the fact that the individual needs to be capable of evaluating information. You can't make the public think or behave sensibly by walking around on eggshells. Everyone involved should insist that the public learn about how to process information effectively. Nobody is even suggesting that it's a good idea. People generally believe that they are born with the ability to understand whatever they hear, and build conclusions. It's a skill that requires effort. People have no idea what Baseian reasoning is or induction or any of the tried and true methods are all about. Critical thinking is not culturally encouraged. Talk about overlooking the root of the problem.

I don’t get that the idea of the metaphysical being irrational. The unified theory of physics has hit a wall in many ways. We know a lot about what we don’t know. So how come it’s so hard to accept that their are processes and information transfers which are inscrutable? That doesn’t prove the existence of any deity but opens a pragmatic choice to ‘choose your faith’. Sorry, still chaotic, but disempowers the absolutists who are the extremes left and right.

I understand you're purposefully conflating religion and the "religion of XYZ", but your jab still doesn't work since there are religions that don't believe in 'God'. Religion necessarily entailing a belief in 'God' would have to be true in order for your slight against Sam to even begin to make sense. Like I said, I get what you're trying to do- Sam is now religious [about the vaccine]- therefore he's no longer an atheist. It just does not work since religion is not the incompatible part with atheism; the belief in 'God' is. So unless you're also trying to insinuate Big Pharma is his 'God' or some crap, the most you could say is that Sam is an atheist that is also religious. *Although I find it ridiculous when people take the position that 'everyone is religious' because they can 'be religious about XYZ'. Take yourself for example, you're a devout Anti-Covidian. Very religious indeed.

I guess Sam likes less critical feedback as he gets from those seeking him out in KZread. I used to follow Sam before Trump caused him to lose his grip on reality

The fact that you think someone criticizing your cult leader means they "lost their grip" is just proving Sam's point that you are someone who has had their mind controlled by a cult. You can't take any good faith criticism, your mind is incapable of even fathoming the idea that maybe Trump wasn't a good guy. Turn the mirror on yourself kid, you have lost your mind hahahaha

I think he's right on the money regarding Trump.. none seems to take seriously what he says because everyone seems to think he's just an entertainer. That has happened in history too many times for us to take lightly TBH, and yet people's stupidity seems to have no limit.

@@johndough1264 Doesn’t that kind of disprove your thesis that he’s a rigid ideologue, blinded by partisanship? If he were, wouldn’t he say that Trump _is_ a dictator? I think you have it wrong; Sam clearly really doesn’t like the phenomenon of Trump, but if you listen to what he says about him, it’s very clear that the primary reason he doesn’t like him is because he lies a great deal, and Sam values honesty above pretty much everything else. He’s even written a book just about lying, and has famously said he thinks it is almost never ok to lie. So it’s not surprising he would have a special dislike for someone who, whether you like him or not, clearly plays pretty loosely with the truth. Moreover, I don’t at all believe the idea that Sam doesn’t like Trump for partisan reasons; he has said on numerous occasions that he doesn’t care about partisan politics, doesn’t identify closely with the Democrats, doesn’t actually like Hillary either, and actually agrees with “probably 80%” of Trump’s policies. That doesn’t sound like a fanatical Democrat to me. He admits he agrees with many of Trump’s policies; he just really, really doesn’t like the lying. And he also thought not agreeing to a peaceful transfer of power was an extreme violation of our democratic norms. It really nothing to do with partisanship or Sam not liking Republicans.
