    YES! More science based content please!!!! I loved this and would love to see more videos like this where you talk with scientists, doctors. I love learning and would love to see more educational content. I would love to see him or other cosmetic scientists talk more about parabens. Also, more about sustainability please.

    I actually feel like I should have paid for this! It was like a TedTalk. After working in the industry for 16yrs I have to say are topics like this never get discussed. We are not equipped to answer questions on these kind of issues. It is more important than ever for me to education myself and I will definitely look out for more videos with you and Sam!

    🙏🙏🙏 Sam thank you for drawing attention to the marketing to young girls versus boys. It is just maddening to me. Particularly impressed that you as a dad picked up on this and felt so passionately about it. Love that Caroline brings us content like this that cuts through the copious amounts of BS in this industry. Well done guys ❤️

    Crude oil is natural unrefined petroleum as it lays in the earth before being harvested(stolen by us from the planet),so yes its natural and organic,but obviously not a good thing.

    BOOM!!! Finally a conversation on natural vs. synthetic by two experienced and intelligent people! And yes, in the USA, people love to throw buzz words around like, "clean, green, natural," when they have absolutely no background knowledge on any of it. So much marketing bullshit too. Great example about people having no problem with supplements, yet all skincare and makeup must be, "all natural." When my friends and I discuss this, I always ask, "Define 'all natural' for me." And as someone who has a chemistry degree, I can assure you most people have no idea what they're talking about.

    Thank you so, so much for this video - it’s an issue I’ve been really struggling to get my head around and this is the first balanced and thoughtful conversation I’ve seen in this subject. Sam’s brilliant - please do a series with him and tackle the natural vs synthetic, sustainability, marketing etc topics to help give us food for thought when we’re contemplating buying something new. I’ve worked in the food industry in the past and the issues over ingredients safety and sustainability are very similar but on a much, much larger scale. After years of yo-yo-ing between ‘natural’ and ‘synthetic’ I have ended up looking for key ingredients to help manage my acne, buying less (or trying to!), and trying to buy from companies whose values (particularly environmental) I admire and respect. It feels like this the best I can manage as the whole subject is so overwhelming and confusing. Thank you again x

    THIS is an amazing video. I mean all of yours are. People want education to understand the ingredients; I feel normal people want “natural” because it sounds like ingredients people understand. Caroline and Sam, THANK YOU. Common sense is far from common these days. It's so important to be vocal about dispelling these myths because our society as a whole, not only the beauty industry but public health even our politics, is swayed by the popular myth du jour. I am sick of it. Like you with anti-vaxers, I don't engage anymore. I expect the respective industries these myths affect to stand their ground and educate rather than feed into this nonsense.

    I love this. I will say that in some cases as a person with hyper sensitive skin, many brands marked as "clean" work for me because they tend to be limited ingredient and lacking things like fragrance and other things that will make my face look like a tomato. But I have had to educate myself about irritants, even understanding the difference between dry and dehydrated skin and how to treat it. The industry does NOTHING to help educate the consumer.

    At last you have clarified the term and explained ' medical grade' thank you for this! X

  • @momcat589
    @momcat5895 жыл бұрын

    I'm from the states and the term "medical grade" always gets me. I mean, why pay so much for a brand (ahem, Skinceuticals, ahem) where they are claiming to be far superior to other brands, but it is simply the same chemicals? I mean, while you are pondering your retinol Q and A, is some high end brand, like Skinceuticals, worth the extra price? Is their 1% retinol better than anybody else's 1% retinol? Is there a difference? Is it more finely milled? Magical? Will I get a unicorn with it? Isn't 1% just 1%? I get that some companies, like Neutrogena, don't like to disclose how much retinol is in their products, so with brands like those, there is no guarantee. But if a brand puts their percentage on the bottle, can we trust that? Or is some other high end brand (i.e, that costs more) more trustworthy on their retinol percentages? Thanks for letting me vent. :) Love your videos! Keep the education coming!

    I'd love to hear a discussion on peptides and what it would take/takes to formulate a product that results in them actually absorbing to an effective level of the dermis. I read a few scholarly articles/studies recently that seemed to indicate that they had to be formulated in thin solutions with what the study termed as "micro-emulsifiers" (they used some proprietary emulsifiers in this particular study) in order for a significant percentage to get to the proper level of the skin. (Primarily because the peptides were water-based and would normally be prevented from absorbing significantly by the skin's lipid barrier.) And even then...if the packaging isn't adequate or appropriate, they would have degraded to the point of uselessness before they even make it to the skin. Cliff notes: are peptides actually worth spending money on? If they are, what types of formulations should we look for?

    I love this so much! I absolutely hate how the world seems to be moving away from science and moving towards the “it feels right to me, it’s MY truth” crap. And it’s so easy to buy into the fears and change how you view the world based on false information. I realised I was starting to buy into the paraben fear, and I have no credible source to back that fear up. But when you see and hear things enough times you start to believe it and all of a sudden it’s THE TRUTH. And thank you for mentioning the glass bottles and increased carbon footprint thing, it’s so important to look at the carbon footprint of the whole life cycle of a product to determine how sustainable it is. People think I’m nuts when I get a plastic bag rather than a paper one (because of the increased shipping weight and hence larger emissions for paper bags), and the whole “use cloth bags instead, it’s more environmentally friendly” thing can drive me bonkers. You have to use a cloth bag up to 400 times to bring the carbon footprint per usage down to that of one (!) sugar cane or corn derived plastic bag. And you can use the plastic bag several times and then recycle it or use it as a bin bag, which in Sweden where I live gets burned and turned into energy in the form of remote heating or electricity. People shouldn’t be afraid of (the right kind of) plastic, as long as you’re being smart about your usage and make sure it doesn’t end up in nature. And don’t even get me started on the vaccine debate.. vaccinate your kids goddammit!! And don’t take antibiotics if you don’t absolutely need to! There, I’m done.

    Bloody love this video, so enjoyable to watch! With every video / blog post I consume that focuses more on science based content, I honestly get so inspired and excited to learn more and more!! I'm not in the scientific field, but it's a huge passion of mine. I think I need a change in career path haha :D

    Yes! I'm so sick of hearing other people spout off about stuff they THINK they know about because they read the label on something... very tiring. This discussion is why I love your channel, Caroline, and people like Sam. Science, logic, common sese...

    I wish there was a “superlike” button! As a science teacher I am always trying to get students to understand the importance of EVIDENCE (not just WIki). Lesson plans for next week might have be showing them this video; hopefully it will have the added bonus of encouraging personal hygiene 😂but at least it should make them consider the negative connotations of the product marketing and maybe sell a few of Sam’s products. Keep up the great content.
