I was stationed in the Air Force Band at Langley AFB in the mid 70's and heard the Commodores at the Navy School of Music with soloist Bill Watrous around 1977. They were quite possibly the finest big band I had ever seen. And I had seen Buddy, Maynard, Kenton, and Woody Herman at that point.

My father was the band conductor for the Navy Band in Norlfolk, VA in the 70's and then we moved to Italy for a couple years, and then back to VA to come to San Diego, CA and retire from teaching here at the School of Music at the Naval Training Center in the late 80's. Do the names LCDR R. Van Hoose or MUCM Jack Dye ring a bell to anyone? We have found reels of concerts, but only a few. Would be interested if anyone found anymore? I have searched and you are the closest I can get to this stuff on here.Thanks and Cheers!

Sounds great, I knew many of the musicians from the 1976 Commodores. Great cats.

Arguably the best trumpet section ever! However, it is Don "Jake" Jacoby not Joe! I had a few lessons while in h.s. when "Jake" was a guest artist as a "rep" for Conn Inst. Co. He played that "hugh" 60 B Conn Bell. His LP "Have Conns Will Travel" was legendary!
