What a golden song, he was shot dead in December 1964, his last words were “lady you shot me” so at 33 he was no more. You can hear his fight, in this song, where we still live in a world, where just for being a different skin colour can spell your death. This breaks my heart, beyond what mere words can ever say.

There is NOBODY like Sam Cooke. This song had me ugly-sobbing the first time I heard it, and I’ve never once made it through without crying, and just now was no exception. That man could WRITE, and that man could SING! I grew up on his early solo work, because he was my Dad’s all time favorite. Later I got into the rest of his career, including his early work with the Soul Stirrers, the best ever classic gospel group. He had many phases to his career, and every bit of it is gold. PLEASE make your next Sam Cooke reaction be “Bring It on Home to Me” from his 1963 Harlem Square Club concert. That live album captures one of the best performances ever in the history of recorded music. You will love it! Thank you for this. My favorite reaction so far. ❤️

Great singer, great song, another tragic story. Rumor has it that the first house I owned in Los Angeles was once owned by Sam Cooke. Just before my time, and I did not hear his story until decades later. But his voice and material are not only gorgeous, but, like this one, important. You may have heard his cover of "Venus". That's been licensed a lot.

Like others in the comments, I've listened to this song since I was a teenager but my first hearing of it was by Otis Redding and it's always remained my favourite. Sam's voice was emotional and beautiful but to me it was Otis Redding's raw passion and the pain he expressed so well that draws me back again and again to this song and everything else he ever sang. (Dock of the Bay. Good God!) Good news is we don't have to choose, we have both. Btw. I'm an old white man in Scotland but even so and even as a teenager I felt the message in the song so strongly.

Sam Cooke has a voice that can make anything he say sound sexy, wonderful and soulful. My favorite songs of his are "Nothing Can Ever Change This Love I Have For You, You Send Me, Cupid, Chain Gang, What A Wonderful World This Would Be. He was truly One Of A Kind. It's so sad how he died.😢 I guess If you are an Icon in this world tragedy sometimes finds you.

U made me REALLY tear up, for I could see ur emotions! They had it VERY hard back then & I hav ALWAYS felt a great sadness for them, for the people my family decends from, the Native Americans, had it..... JUST AS HARD. If people would simply look past the color of ones' skin, for that's ALL IT IS, is.... color. "No tree has branches full enough, to fight amongst each other"!!!

He was amazing. The first black artist to own his own record company. Many, many artists have covered this song. Huge controversy and suspicion over his shooting in LA.

This song touches everyone. It comes from the heart of people living in tragic times. People today live a much softer life with as much potential as you are willing to work for. This song keeps it in our memory and hearts that this was not always so. That is why it is covered so many times.

I have loved Sam Cooke since I was a little girl because my Dad loved him and played his records! Sam Cooke is definitely the GOAT and a part of the soundtrack of my life! I love all his music, including the Gospel music he made as a member of the Soul Stirrers when he was starting out as a young man. My Dad was also in a Gospel group which is why he identified with Sam Cooke so much! Sam Cooke influenced a lot of great musicians that came after him, such as Rod Stewart, who always praised him. Sam Cooke was a great singer/songwriter as well as a civil rights activists who was famously friends with Malcom X. He wrote this song about the Civil Rights movement of the 60s after hearing Bob Dylan's song, "Blowing In The Wind"! Jim Crow laws were very big in the South and the lyrics tell the story so heartbreakingly. His murder is still controversial because many people believe he was set up because he chose to be vocal about civil rights!! He was taken way too soon! RIP! This song always makes me cry because his voice is magical!!
