I recently found your podcast and like it very much. In regards to wet blocking your knitting: I have always used the washer with all of my knitting no matter what the item or yarn type. I have a top loader washer which may make it easier, I am not sure. I choose the temperature of water that I want and let it fill. I then add my wool wash and mix it around. I add my sweater, shawl, or whatever I have knitted to the water. I have the washer on pause (or turned off) or whatever setting so that the wash cycle won't continue. I let it soak for as long as I want to. Then I just turn the dial on my washer directly to spin. Sometimes (not often) I will use a lingerie bag when I place the item in the water. After the spin cycle is over, I lay the item out to dry. So much easier than all other methods and dries quicker. I have never had a problem. Happy knitting.

I had a horrible experience with my washer. But I used a delicate cycle on my front loader. What happened was that I washed a beautiful madelinetosh cashmere merino and silk sweater. It was too big so I thought maybe that I would shrink it slightly! The problem was I washed it alone and the washing machine kept extending the cycle because the spin was getting out of balance being that it was one garment. It is now about a size 4t-6 child. It is totally felted. The yarn was a gift from my husband, very expensive and I held onto it for like 15 years waiting for the perfect pattern. My first grandchild is on the way and if it is a girl I am going to steek it which will be easy because there is zero stitch definition left and I’m going to turn it into a winter coat. Only problem is the weight. It is so heavy that I think a child might not be able to hold it up! Ha!😂 So watch it very carefully especially if it is the only garment in there.

That sounds like a horrible experience after so many years of hanging onto the yarn! 😱 hopefully you can salvage it. Make it for your grandkid and take one photo of him trying to hold it up and then you’ll have the memory 🤗

Another tip for quicker blocking is to lay the garment or item on a plastic garbage bag -- this makes it speedier too.

I did sort of a 3 needle bind and off to give more stretch to my neckband. Using one size larger needle I did one bind off stitch and the next stitch attached to cast on neckband. Skipped a cast on edge stitch, did one bind off, and repeated around. End result was every other stitch attached at cast on edge. Vastly improved the stretchiness.

I opted to cast off and block first to try to stretch the neck as much as possible and then sewed on each 2nd stitch. Seems to have worked!

a friend of mine told me to put a fan on my knits during blocking -- its amazing! My knits dry so quick!

I also saw that episode where she uses her washing machine spin cycle. So I bravely tried it out on a recently finished sweater. It worked amazingly! The sweater was non super wash yarn too! 🎉

I wash and block almost everything I knit with the delicate/wool setting on my washing machine, and if I let an item soak for some time I still put it in the spin cycle of the same program. Otherwise nothing dries in less than a week.

I have been using the drain/spin cycle on everything the last few weeks and it's been game changing! Can't believe it took me this long to learn about. So many wasted moments not being able to wear my knits 😂

I did not do the foldover neckline on the Salty Days sweater. I didn't want that thick neckband so I knitted half the number of rows suggested and did an Italian bind off and the sweater looks great, fits over my head AND I cut my twisted stitch rows in half. Yay! Love the finished product, esp after blocking. Enjoyed your podcast--very realistic assessment of your knitting and honest opinions. Thanks!

I finished my Cumulus Blouse knit out of Dops Kid Silk Mohair yesterday, soaked it and put it into my washing machine for 800 spins per minute. Then I let it dry layed flat. It went really well 😊

Finish the dk socks and give them to someone. They are lovely

Had this thought as well but the first sock I made has quite a few mistakes in it so I always feel bad giving people knits when there are glaring issues. Originally I was going to gift these to my sister-in-law before I made the mistakes. Maybe I’ll see if someone here is okay with it though

I always use the drain/spin cycle on my washing machine, for all my garments, whatever the yarn. If the garment is small enough I put it in a net bag, if not I put in a pillowcase and tie it closed. I also put a towel in the drum which prevents too much movement within the drum. I’ve never had a problem (not even with mohair). Thanks for a great episode! Love that so far everyone seems to only have positive experiences using drain and spin on all materials so this will be my go to in the future. I also used a towel today on my salty days and i think it also helped soak up some of the water

I have used my spin and drain on my washer for every knit I have made in the past year. I have never had a problem and I make sweaters, cardigans, shawls, socks, etc. in all fibers and never have had a problem. Maybe Ive just been lucky but it does work wonders on drying time.

Hello from San Diego, I just knit 2 Salty Sweaters they are so easy to knit and wonderfully warm, I did sew my neck down, it was super simple and fast, stretching easily over my head, I did make a mistake on Row 5 when Kika tells you to shift to K2tog, I did not get this done right,, however on the sleeves it came out great, lol,

@@Goodknits_ lol. I almost ruined my first Salty days by putting it in my washer. It felted the yarn. Lol. Luckily i knit 🧶 so loose that my oversized sweater actually fits better now. Just ruined the lovely texture a bit. I figured if Olina from Norwegien knitter can wash all her knits in the washer so can I lol. Guess now i have to make a 3 rd lol

Your Chloe sweater is beautiful. Have you thought of knitting a bra in a complimentary color to wear with it. I’ve knit some NakedKnits bras which I wear all the time. There are many popular bra/bralette patterns what would work with your sweater.

I made a Salty Days Sweater this fall and it is by far my most worn sweater to date. I have 9-10” of positive ease so quite oversized and I LOVE it! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine 🧶🙂 I also put a hat in the spin cycle for the first time ever and it turned out fine- unharmed! I placed it in a lingerie bag just in case. My plan is to try it with an older sweater I don’t love as much. Will let you know how it goes 😉

I wish I had 10” of positive ease for mine. Will definitely be a tighter fit but still some positive ease. Had I just gone up the half mm in needle size I think I would have been happier with it in the end. I also used a lingerie bag for my hats and it worked really well! And today I put a towel in with the sweater and I think it helps really absorb some of the water cause it came out much less wet than the hats on the same cycle

I pretty much put all my knits in the washer, low spin only. If it’s a sweater, I fold the sleeves in on the sweater so they don’t get stretched. Works every time. 😊

Knitty Stew poscast made a mistake on Icord and she said she did a little swatch to see how the stitches were laying on the icord edge. Maybe that would work for you?

I always use the drain and spin for my wet woolies, including mohair, but I put the item into a lingerie bag. It has never gone wrong. So far. Fingers crossed…

I hope you haven’t ripped it out yet. I would try putting it on a cord or a string and lay it out pulling at the edge and maybe steaming it. What you called the rounded ridge may appear. Also knitting the icord twice will make the edge less tight. After knitting the Icord, slip the stitches back to the left hand needle and knit them again. I do this all the time when I notice my icord getting a little tight. Good luck, it is a lovely piece

I’ll give the string and steam block a chance but it seems to just be attached all together so I don’t think there is any stretching it out 😕 Someone else mentioned the same icord trick as you with double knitting it and I’ve never heard rest before so it’s a good tip!

Petiteknit has an instagram highlight saved on how she dries the knits in the washing machine ;) Have you thought about emailing Sari about the issue? Perhaps you knit your icord too tight, a suggestion would be to slide the icord stitches back onto the right needle & knit them again and then continue with the rest.

I think it’s definitely possible I just knit the icord too tight but it’s about 10-15 rows down now so not sure I could fix just that one side of Icords? I’ve never had to correct one before.

I have the same issues with the weekend hat decreases, one side always does not look very polished, lots of wonky stitches. I have made 4 I think, still don’t know how I could improve…

I bought the KnitPro one that is blue and white. It’s inexpensive but works well for me. I don’t use a lot of yarn that needs winding though so i don’t mind a cheaper option

I just started the Turtle Dove today! I'm finding it's hard to remember to slip the second stitch in the icord on right sides. I wonder if maybe you're knitting it instead of slipping wyif and maybe that's creating the tightness?

There is definitely a good chance I made a mistake on the icord itself. I thought I was being careful but maybe I mixed up the RS and WS icords or did what you said.

Before you rip out your turtle dove, put in a lifeline. Then you won’t have to worry about dropped stitches!

Very good point. I was thinking I may not be able to easily because of all the twisted stitches in the curving lines column but i guess that’s also just picking up the right leg?
