I’ve always wanted to a reef tank but have been very intimidated by the sheer amount of knowledge it takes and the consequences of harming an animal if you mess up. This video has really helped demystify it and given me an accessible starting point to start learning. Thank you so much!
Nice, well explained video as always! And It just struck me that my wife must be evaporating fresh water because she definitely gets more and more salty as the day goes on....

I am someone who came from freshwater, and even that hobby I only knew things like pH, dGh and all that other stuff about it, and looking over into saltwater it just seemed like this impossible jump for me with all the maintenance being ten fold and how to keep coral alive and healthy, but this video really did explain everything I needed and wanted to know and I should have my 32.5 gallon Fluval Flex SEA picked up by the end of this month, and then from then just spend months researching things fully before setting anything up. Cheers!
Wow, hobby has come a long way since I had my 29 gallon take back in the late 80s, early 90s. I did water changes once a month and had a carbon filter and powerhead and that's about it. I'd probably test the salinity every so often too. Fish poop just fell to the gravel and I assumed bacteria just ate it. I used tap water and would mix it with store bought sea salt. Some of my fish lived for a few years too. I'm thinking of starting another one.
4 weeks into my first reef tank. 2 fish in. Bloody loving it 🤙🏻🇦🇺

Wow, I felt like I was in the Caribbean Sea, swimming with the fish. Loved this video! So knowledgeable. One of the best,if not the best aquariums with so many different fish Corals, I love it! Stay safe, stay blessed, continue doing what you’re doing, great hobby!

After being in the freshwater hobby for just 3 yrs I am looking forward to venturing into the saltwater world so I'm glad I found you Mr. Reef Dork! I am a wee bit intimidated but you have provided a good foundation to get started. Cheers

Hi Alex! I love your videos & I think that u are doing really, really well with that Copperband! 😀👍👍
I've seen many of your videos and I really like your content! One note on that video, regards the algae eating fish, they can't be classed as part of "filtration" as they don't remove any nutrients from the tank, rather recycling it. I understood the way you said it (meant for someone completely new to the hobby) but it's just not right! Other than that, everything else was nicely explained! 👍
Great video! The only thing I’d add to make the new hobbyists life easier is nitrifying bacteria additives.
Nice Video Brother, very informative

i'm in the research phase still. this video makes it feel slightly less intimidating. it's still intimidating, but it seems a bit more doable than i thought. i take living things seriously so i want to make sure i'm fully aware of everything before i before i take this on. thank you 💙 back to more research i go lol

Adding nitrifying bacteria to your tank is a much better way to start the nitrogen cycle than adding a table shrimp.

@@JohnMurphyB it's going well! Bit of the ugly stage just now but with the exception of 1 single water change when I didn't get chance to collect due to weather/work/tide times I've been using 100% NSW. @@PracticalReefer I am worried that the local sea water could feed algae alright. I was thinking that you would need to time visits to the beach for mid tide when the currents are faster? Id imagine the levels of nitrates could be quite high after rain due to the farming run off, I can see plenty of green algae at my local beach anyway! Thanks, I'll check out your other videos on it.
@PracticalReefer
2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnMurphyB yeah check out my 2 videos, 1 on collecting and another I tested a few basic parameters including the Nitrates and Phosphates too. You're thinking the right way! 👍 you want to collect just before high tide when all that fresh sea water surges in (if like me you sadly don't have a boat...) and your right avoid areas near farm land and collecting after heavy or sustained rain due to run off which could contain unwanted chemicals/pesticides/fertiliser and effect salinity too, good luck! 🤞
After doing 6 years of freshwater i will be trying reef within the next 2 months. I cant lie it looks scary but im excited
Setting up the ro/di is what took so long to get my tank filled honestly.
1. Not too much fish. 2. Find hardy fish that friendly, not aggresive. 3. Protein skimmer. 4. Live rock. 5. Good filtration with lots of bioball.

Just freshwater
Thanks. I think I'll stick to freshwater though hahah but this was informative.
For the unpolluted seawater, should I keep it in some containers for six months to kill all the harmful bacteria? Some say there may be some diseases like ich in the water. Also, for wild caught fish, how can I get rid of all of its parasites and be sure of it? I brought home a clarkii that somehow washed up by the side of a shallow pool which is unusual because I saw no anemones. At first, it swam oddly but now it is fine but I am scared to put it with the others because it may have parasites. Any ideas? Thankyou!
thank you 🙃💁🏻♀️🇨🇦
Disagree with #1. Have never bought pre-mixed water from a petstore. Have always used tap water, mx it with a reef salt and use a good water conditioner. Never had a single issue with my corals, and I keep SPS in my tank.

I have done Tropical in the past and have always dreamt of Marine. Question. We like to go away for a winter sun holiday (Diving) So will be away 10-14 days probably twice perhaps 3 x a year. We also do many short 3-4 day breaks. We have someone that can come in and feed fish but no more than that. Am I dreaming that i can keep a healthy tank

Long weekend is fine, 14 days is more of a pain but it can be done.
Can you use the dechlorinators or the detoxifiers that they sell at the fish stores instead of that filter when it comes to the stuff in the tap water?
@ReefDork
2 жыл бұрын
No, there are loads of other things in tap water you need to filter out. The total dissolved solids in tap water is usually around 300 parts per million. You want 0 ppm for a marine tank! An ro/di filter is the only way to achieve that.
