From Bradley westmoreland in the 60 s to 1971 when I left it was a great place fish water ski camp is was the number one agricultural land of the world 4 growing season s the lack of run off water from the fields pollution coming in from the new river Mexicali and all the fertiliser the ranchers added to the demise I remember all the migration off birds in the wintertime snow-capped mountains in the winners and 119 120s in the summertime great places to eat town pump westmoreland and grasso s Italian restaurant in El Centro Larry friese class of 71 brawley

It looks good, but there is a very good reason not many people are in the area. The air and water are polluted, making it a good place to avoid.

Salton Sea in it's hay day was beautiful ! Just makes me sick to see what man can devastate by careless management and practice..... it was like a beautiful oasis jewel in the middle of the desert....teaming with clean water ...abundance of fish and wildlife now........sad reminder of deviation of a beautiful place.......

It wasn't "teaming with clean water" in the 1960s when I used to go there. Oil slick from the boats, dead Corvina floating even back then. Stink was there even then. Thanks - Lumpy

I visited the Salton Sea about 2 years ago. I opened the door on my rig to go outside and I was immediately attached by flies and the place stunk so bad I held my breath and got right back in my rig and left! Wow, it's hard to believe this was once a resort area like Lake Tahoe just a few short years ago.

Even though the US history of the sea stems from 1905-07, the area has a history that goes back a few million years before! I saw a PBS docu about this place in the 80's, have been interested in this place since then! An engineering mistake created most of what we see today. Great vid Russ...Cheers to you & Scoobs!

Excellent video. I've boondock camped all around the Salton Sea for at least 2 months the past 2 winters and haven't had any problem with the smell. It's not much worse than on the ocean. On the S end of the Sea the stink from the cattle yards near Niland was a 100 times worse. On dead calm nights the stink would come rolling in and then be gone in about a hour. Very weird. I didn't have that last year. 2017 SanDiego will be diverting irrigation water away from the Sea, so it will really go downhill. It's a fascinating area that time has forgotten. Hopefully Calif. won't let it get so bad that it's irreversible.

More informational than other videos on the Sea. There are two potential small freshwater sources, but the Sea may still be taking sewage from Mexicali (they call that canal "the New River"). There are various groups working together to perform studies to improve the water quality and to decrease the salinity. Wiki Salton Sea for more info.

I enjoy watching your videos, My dad used to love going to the Salton Sea, I used to go fishing with him back in the 60's and early 70's. I got sea sick once out in the middle of the sea, after that I wouldn't go out in the boat again. He liked it so much he sold his house in El Cajon and bought a double wide trailer in Niland and lived there for a few years. I went to see him in 1993 and the place had gone down hill, smelled pretty bad. He left Niland and went back east to live by my half sister. I have a lot of memories of the Salton Sea. There is a good documentary about the Salton Sea that was made around 2002 I think. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoieqaOQqK-YY8Y.html
