Wykonawcy: Scholares Minores pro Musica Antiqua
Choreografia: Dariusz Brojek
Kierownictwo artystyczne: Danuta i Witold Danielewiczowie
Fragment koncertu z okazji 35th Anniversary of the John Paul II Foundation, Chiesa Nuova di Santa Maria in Vallicella, Rzym, 22.10.2016 r.

/ENG/ Piece of music: Saltarello
Musicians: Scholares Minores pro Musica Antiqua
Choreography: Dariusz Brojek
Conducting: Danuta and Witold Danielewicz
Fragment of the concert of the 35th Anniversary of the John Paul II Foundation, Chiesa Nuova di Santa Maria in Vallicella, Rome, October 22, 2016.
Instruments used in the concert: shawms (soprano, sopranino), fiddles, Rauschpfeife (alto, tenor), violas da gamba, the chalumeau, the recorder (sopranino), the lute, percussion instruments.
Saltarello was an Italian medieval folk dance with a energy, cheerful and lively character. The name Saltarello comes from the Italian verb saltare - "to jump". References of this dance first appeared in Naples in the 14th century: the oldest document that mentions saltarello is the manuscript Add. 29987, from Italy, dated around 1390. The music survives, but no early instructions for proper dancing are known. Initially, Saltarello was an Italian folk dance, but in the 16th century it became part of many court dances.

I love the sounds of the old instruments: though it was a little strange seeing a solo recorder being played while hearing something like a shawm. This is a great group!

A much rougher version of the ancient Saltarello dance music is still done by Italian everyday folk now, but wearing much lighter, simpler, easy c to mpove in clothing nowadays than these very bulky, heavy Mediaeval and Renaissance costumes. And all the courtly bowing, curtsying etc rituals are omitted (unless they are just deliberately clowning around).
