Salt is Leaving - BBC Saturday Night Theatre - J. B. Priestly

Музыка

John Boynton Priestley was an English novelist, playwright, screenwriter, broadcaster and social commentator.
His Yorkshire background is reflected in much of his fiction, notably in The Good Companions (1929), which first brought him to wide public notice. Many of his plays are structured around a time slip, and he went on to develop a new theory of time, with different dimensions that link past, present, and future.

Thanx So very much Uncle Chesterton ! We always like to engage in a good 'Priestley' ( and what a darned good one this was too-with dare I say it...a soupçon of humour-or is it me ha' ? ) after a busy weekend ! Anyway- Sorry I've been so quiet and unobtrusive recently....but- me and Lottie have been at our wit's end recently, what with arranging the local Ferret Racing 'world cup' competition in town...and then going on our early season holiday to 'Where The Mud Meets The Sea' - Southport !....it's been rather hectic. Thanks Uncle Chessie.

This murder mystery unfolds in a convoluted manner. Our protagonist, Dr. Salt, seems to be clairvoyant as he takes a personal interest in the fate of a patient and unravels the mystery by intuition, leading him to conclusions that are beyond the comprehension of police detectives and acquaintances of the victim.

Priestley was a great writer and more importantly , a great and compassionate human being . It's a great shame he's gradually slipped into being forgotten in Britain today. Check out his other radio plays..?

Not so as his plays are still being studied in schools . Just as that old playwright, Shakespeare still is read , studied and performed today . Personally I much prefer JBP

Very good. Thank you very much for uploading. As someone else says, very well acted. The doctor did come over as a bit "know it all" as someone said, but carried off very well by the actor. With JBP you don't expect a run of the mill detective story, and this isn't one, even if he did write it originally just for his own amusement. He was a student of human character, and it shows. I wonder whether he toyed with the idea of writing a series of "Dr Salt" mysteries, a bit like Christie and Poirot, etc. But evidently, he didn't write any more, or none that has been discovered. I don't know about his "theory of time"; I tend to think of that as more of a literary device, but nevertheless, it's interesting.

Think of all the elements that had to come together to present this. Radio, the art of radio drama, a J.B. Preistley plot, actors from here to Broadcasting House all adding up to a wordy excursion and pay checks. This cloaks the mediocre - drowning in verbiage, "one day it's a turkey that you know fold - you may be stranded out in the cold" "There's no business like show business" = ,

Thanks as always for making it possible to listen to a well-acted play. I found Salt rather too ‘know it all’, and began to hope that one of the other characters would bury an axe in his head. Just to...shut him up! Mind you, the other characters were also annoying. A bit like the conclusion! That really WAS annoying! These minor gripes aside I can thoroughly recommend it to anybody who likes JPH!

I don't think this type of thing was JBs forte still well worth a listen. You will have to forgive the plot faults. It's a bit like Shakespeare, wonderful if you read between the lines, but hard going at times. Mind you the language takes some concentration to decipher.
