Salsa Dancing On1 and On2 Timing

Ойын-сауық

This video will briefly describe the difference between dancing Salsa On1 timing (Los Angeles Style) compared to dancing Salsa On2 timing (New York / Puerto Rican Style). The main difference is on which step do you 'break' when doing the basic salsa dance step. This is one of the most common questions we get, and we decided to answer it in video form. @MaNiTo973 Yes, but we just wanted to answer a quick question for early salseros/as that wonder which style they are learning in their local classes. On2 is danced to the clave (and of course there is 3-2 or 2-3 clave for the 2-3 or 6-7 emphasis, but we didn't want to go there yet) :-)

    I love your videos so I'm going to give you this idea that no one has done yet: It would be awesome if you made a video of the exact choreography with the same music but one danced on 1 and the other on 2. No one has done this (they've danced both kinds but with different moves) and I think it would better answer the question of their functional difference. I've been dancing for over 20 years and have done on 1 and on 2, but I still don't get why some prefer one over the other. Seeing one, then the other, then both side by side would be extremely educational :-)

    I've always been confused on the LA/NY debate. All my local x-body classes are advertised as 'NY style' and yet it is almost all 'on 1' timing. I've also been told that NY style includes more shines but I rarely see them. Great videos, by the way.

    @tzuchienchiu Puerto Rican On2 is the same as the NY On2 except that men start going forward (breaking on the 2 beat) instead of back. Basically NY On2 is on ladies timing (women break forward on count 2) while PR On2 is on men's timing (men break forward on count 2). Hope this helps!

    I think if you have a good leader (male) and a good follower (fem) of course it should not matter dancing is feeling it!!!!! some people r so worry about counting instead of dancing. what you should tell people counting is to have a basic idea but go and have fun!!!! and men please be good leaders if your partener looks good you will look great

    @stephanschleim These video are meant for beginners and we try to keep it very simple in order provide a quick understanding : are they learning on1 or on2 in class? This way new dancers don't feel overwhelmed and become discouraged early on from learning salsa dancing. Feel free to provide a more technical video explanation, we would love to share it!

    In the 1970's in LA at Club Virginia, the latin nightclub for LA at the time, I saw Cuban Pete and Rita Moreno dance the mambo. On 1. The song was Pare Cochero which is a Cuban montuno. That was the way mambo dancers in LA did the mambo. This was the Cuban style of dancing mambo on 1. Cha cha cha was also on 1. Along comes a young Puerto Rican crowd who did their dancing at the Club Corso in NY, ( I believe that was the name I could be wrong) and they were dancing the mambo on 2. And the Cha cha cha also on 2. Latin on 2 is a NY thing. Everywhere else you go in the latin world, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, etc latin has always been on 1. Neither one is the only way to dance salsa today. The only problem you get is when one dancer is on 1 and the other is on 2.

    Hello Mr. Addicted2Salsa! I had a few questions! So, On-1 is known as LA, and the feet move with the cowbell, on the beats right? And I've heard there are two types of mambo: classic and modern, one being NY on-2 and the other being PR on-2, right? I'm not sure which is which. Is NY on-2 modern mambo and PR on-2 classic mambo or vice versa? Or am I completely wrong and neither have to do with each other.

    He is showing the difference between LA and NY both count 123 567 however LA breaks on 1 and NY breaks on 2, with 1 being in place. NY is like dancing the Cha Cha without the 4&. Mambo on the other hand counts 234 678 and breaks on 2.

    There's something wrong with this explanation, there's only two way of dancing to dance on1 or to dance contratiempo against the time wich is stepping between 1 and 2, this video doesn't show nothing because there's no music,, both example could be stepping on1,,, starting by missing a step doesn't mean you are a contratiempo

    I dance on1 and on2 depends on who i'm dancing with...correct me if I'm wrong but, can you also say that there's a difference on where you put emphasis. For instance, I think that on1 emphasis goes on the 1 and 5 counts, whereas on2 emphasis goes on the 2 and 6 counts.

    This is wrong. "Breaking" is taking a step and replacing the weight. It is a change of direction. When dancing on one, the break step is the 1-2 and 5-6. When breaking on 2, it is one beat later: on 2-3 and 6-7. So, when you call out the beats that you step in on1 you say "1-2-3, 5-6-7' or quick-quick-slow, quick-quick-slow. In other words you, hold your place (don't change weight) in the 4 and the 8. But, on 2 you hold weight on the 1 and 5 (after the first 1). So, you should have chanted (1)-2-3-4,6-7-8 and thereafter 2-3-4,6-7-8. The first "one" is a starter step and is only chanted the very first time, after that it is omitted. Instead, you chanted "1-2-3-4,5-6-7", which would be quick-quick-quick-quick-quick, instead of 1-quick-quick-slow,quick-quick-slow. Look at Eddie Torres's video. He clearly states that the break back is on the 2 (man's right foot, lady's left) and the break forward is on the 6 (man's left foot, lady's right). You break back correctly on the 2 but the break forward on the man's left on 5 instead of on 6 as you should.

    Break, mean on what beat you made your first move, if you made your first move on one, then you are breaking on one, if you made your first move on the second beat, you are breaking on two an so on; but breaking on one does not mean you are dancing on one, like breaking on two does not mean you dancing on two. You can not say: " To dance on two, you do on the second beat what you normally do on the first beat." That is wrong! Dancing on one and dancing on two are different, steps are different, turns are different.

  • @ObrienJeff9
    @ObrienJeff98 жыл бұрын

    Eddy Torres, first move ( left leg moving backward in the first beat,) that is breaking on one. Second move right leg moving backward, if he make this move first, then he was braking on two, but he not; so Eddy Torres NY mambo break on one.

    That is not dancing on one, that is braking on one. Dancing on two and braking on two is totally different. If you dance on one, you can not dance with somebody dancing on two. Steps are different, turns are different. If you make your first move on two, you are braking on two, but that does not mean you are dancing on two, you may be dancing on one.
