Just wanted to say that I subscribed to your podcast like 10 years ago when I dabbled in salsa, now I'm picking it up again and I'm psyched that the first video I find on KZread is you guys! Just what I needed. :)

As a musician, I find it much easier to find the 1 with the melody(Piano) on the second track, for some reason with the sticks I get easily confused. If you noticed, you're stepping the one at the beginning of the bar or melody.

I found the instructor knowlagable and very helpful. This is a good video together with his additional one (with the lady.) 10/10

I had no problem with hitting the claves on 2 & 3 in the first track, but the second one is too fast for me at this point in time. It helped me to count out all 8 of the steps (as if you are playing simple 8ths on a hit hat), in time to the music, at which point I realized that the first claves did indeed fall exactly on the 2 and 3 count.

Tip - Especially in faster salsas, you will hear not just the clave rhythm, but also the "bata" rhythm too in some salsas. Just like there are 2-measure clave patterns in 3-2 and 2-3 Son Clave, bata is usually this 2-measure rhythm that repeats and repeats, like this - ONE and TW0 and THREE AND four AND ONE and TWO AND three AND four AND. The beats in caps above indicate the accents in the bata rhythm. The bata is often done by timbalists in a salsa conjunto or ensemble. So take the salsa forward and back basic. So if you, as a leader, doing "On 1" salsa, and you do... "forward LF" on the "ONE", "close up LF back to RF" on the "THREE", and; "back RF" on the next "ONE" - Congrats! You are doing the "On 1" salsa beat properly with the bata rhythm! So don't just listen to the piano montuno, or the bass tumbao, or the clave in salsa when you want to get your salsa dance "on time" with the beat. Listen also to the bata rhythm (if any) in the percussion.

I totally agree with the value of the lengh of that basic step. I actually had never consciously thought about ther '5' in that context. I will say that I'm getting where I don't like the faster beats very much.

I'm not an expert, just used to dance for fun 😊. With that Cleared out, I think the second song is danced in the 5 or danced following the woman pattern. I believe that must be addressed, the video was great 👍, the only thing I would explain is all of this is on 1 and there is another way of feeling the beat dancing on 2

Hi I've started salsa a few months ago and need some clarification. Is it true that for the on 2 style, that I would need to match the 2 beat as every "new measure" begins?

Can you do this for a tumbao beat? That would be incredible

The steps in this vid are for the leader dancing On1. Some songs are better for dancing On 1 and some are better for On2. Because the clave is so distinct in the first song, I'd say it's better for On2 (dancing with the rhythm). The second song it's not so noticeable and I find dancing On1 (dancing with the melody) to be a better fit for that song.

James Lee, this video is for salsa on1. In salsa on 2, the two beat and the six beat are the breaking points or the change in direction. salsa on 2 NY style (Eddie Torres style), the man steps back on one with the left foot, the ladies step forward on one with the right foot. pay close attention to the congas. there are two thumping sounds and one slap sound. the thumping is the (8 and) and the (4 and) the slap is the 2 and the 6 beats. The clave is the most important instrument, it's what all the other instrument reference to keep the count. the clave can either be 2-3 or 3-2

Thanks Jorge Antonio . Yes, this is the On1 version of the video. Our On2 version of this video is bundled as part of our app (which we show the markings of 2,3 and 6,7 counts to the beat). I think people use 'musical' bars (as mentioned by someone below) instead of actually using the 'clave' for marking the beat; which causes a lot of mistakes and confusion. We also have to be aware that depending on the salsa song, it could be 2-3 or 3-2 clave (and in some advanced songs) the clave can switch between those two modes mid-song and we need to adapt our timing accordingly. A lot of dancers will dance a song (especially 70s Fania songs) and in the middle of it realize that they are off-beat - because they didn't notice the composer decided to switch the timing mid-song.

Jorge Antonio Thanks. You can always redownload the app for free when you get a new phone or tablet. I'm working and testing new teaching methodologies to make it easier for people to train their ears on finding the beat (*mixing use of technology and salsa music). We'll see how it goes.

Hi, I have a doubt: if the first step (left to front) on the exercises is the “one”, the song of the first exercise in exposed as a 2/3 clave but form me is on clave 3/2. It seems to suits much better with the piano and the “clave” of the song” But If the teacher exposed the exercise as 2/3 clave, for sure I listening wrong. how to recognize that is on clave 2/3. Thanks for the help

Alex Charles No. You are putting a lot of tense on your calf. Keep your body weight off the ankle and continue to the feet. I think you are bending your upper body. Hope you do not mind me giving you some pointers: Stand up straight and use your pelvis as center of gravity. Your body weight should follow through at the hip socket and continues to the knee, ankle, and foot.

Hi. What do you mean by "on beat with the clave, not the music. finally someone explains it!"? He steps 2 3 and 5 on beat with the clave. What do you mean "not the music"? With this "salsa on 1" timing, whether you are on beat with the clave at 2 or on beat with the accented music on 1, you are still in the same timing. No?

Anthony. Have you seen the score of the music? Without having seen the sheet music, I would have put the 1 and 5 steps at different places, in both pieces of music.

Not only the score of the music, but we have the actual decomposed frequency waveforms that mark the sounds and the very important 'clave pattern'. ;-)

David Fairthorne The most important thing is to match your steps to the Clave instrument in the music (whether you dance On1 or On2). The clave in this track is for 2-3, so you can hear that quick double 'tap-tap' happening on counts 2 and 3 in the steps.

If you listen in the second song you can hear the percussion give you two beats before the 1 on "8 -and." If you hear this you know where 1 is vs 5. Also listen to the melodic up and down of the piano. The "up" is in the first measure and the "down" during the second. In the first track David's foot gets to the one position about a a quarter beat early but then he pauses before giving the 2 and three. Don't let this throw you. the clave is hitting on 2 and 3 as are his R and L foot on since he is dancing on 1. I hope this helps and isn't confusing.

Dancers will dance to the instrument thats loudest and can be heard - clave , drums , dumb bells etc. Not all songs play all the instruments . And even in a song with all the instruments , all the instruments are not played all the time. THE INSTRUMENTS ARE SYNCHRONIZED TO EACH OTHER- so it doesnt matter what instrument you are danceing to, you will be in sync with the music which ever instrument you dance to. IN THIS VIDEO , the dancer focuses on the CLAVE , and its EXACTLY THE SAME THING as dancing on the other beat ... But the problems is , the dancer goes out of step - dancees too fast even for the clave, and it looks and feels like he is dancing on 5 or some other out of step beat ...This happnes at certain points in the video and thats why people are complaining. Probably it was a video /audio sync problem or just that the dancer forgot and danced too fast and or out of sync . This happens only for a shot time ( like 10% of the video ) but is enough to get people complaining ...

How do you explain to students that the clave is the key, and yet that they don't step on or accentuate the (6)& or 8 clave hits (in salsa-on-1 with 2-3 clave)? In the descarga montuno it's easy to hear the 1 (and not hard to hear the 3, 5, and 7). How do you get students to care about the clave when they can dance to the music without any awareness or sense of the clave?

I used this video when I was a begginer and it really is one of the things that helped practice by myself when I had no experience. Thanks a lot #Addicted2Salsa. P.S (what are the names of the songs>>???)

Please start with a slower beat and count all six steps out loud. There's no way I can follow this.

saw some comments complaining about the first slow rhythm demostration . and also saw the second rhythm demostration at the end. my conclucion is. first slow beat you dance on 5 and the second fast beat you dance at 1. i close my eyes and just start stepping different times and find out you step on 5 by the first on. it just my opinion doesnt matter whos wrong or right did it again and found myself dancing equally with you on the slow on. it is not so easy to distinguish the two but i admit i am wrong, good video. close your eyes listing and try to find the beat it helped me. one cuestion ? can u dance on 5? or will it be weird and stupid?

The 2nd song is solid but the first feels like you are on-2 with the musical bar beginning on your right foot.

For the first rhythm, don't you hear strongest accent on the what-you-call-5? I'm sure you/Anthony must be right - all your/his videos are excellent - but I would call the strongest accent the 1, and thus I would call this a 3-2 clave, so my steps coincide with the clave on what-I-would-call 1, 6 and 7. Am I wrong? Why?

I just started with this. It helps counting with accentuation on the clave beats, meaning: 1, TWO, THREE, 4, FIVE, six AND seven, EIGHT

Good idea to come up with but very poor selection of tracks. The first one is way too complicated and it seems that the clave is not matching the piano phrase. The second one is very fast even for the 'advanced practice'.

He’s moving his foot starting on 4 and landing it on 5. Instead of pausing on 4 and quickly stepping and landing on 5. It has the effect of making a step pattern like fast-fast-slow, fast-fast-slow. Instead of fast-fast-fast-pause, fast-fast-fast-pause

"Dance to the music?" If the rhythm is 2 - 3 --- 5 -- (6)& -- 8 --- 2 - 3 --- 5 -- (6)& -- 8 --- (for 2-3 son clave), why do we step 123 567 (for on-1 timing)? I know sometimes in some styles of music (jazz, blues,...) it can be good to dance either ahead of the beat or behind the beat - creating a sense of urgency or cool relaxation, but in salsa it seems we "dance to the music!" we just ignore the (6)& and 8. Why don't we dance to the clave? I know there's some overlap between this and my other questions, but I think I might be highlighting different aspects of the same root question.

The principle and intention here is great. But neither of these are good music tracks for a beginner. The first one is too syncopated and the second is too fast.

I think it all depends on perspective and where you are on a salsa level. The first one has no syncopation as it is a standard 2-3 clave (it is a basic montuno). The first track is more similar to most slow modern salsa music they you will be hearing at a night club. If you become good with this track, you will have an easier time working with the timing of regular salsa music when out dancing. The second track tends to be used in more advanced (Mambo/Latin Jazz/Afro-Descarga) salsa music you might be dancing to - especially at salsa congresses (they like to play the oldies)

Addicted2Salsa Dude the first song is a standard 2-3 clave but the clave is crossed! is the clave effect something you guys added or is that how it is in the song? if you don't believe me try clapping out the clave both ways over the first song.

David Diaz It is not cross and it is a standard 2-3 clave that was already part of the track (we didn't artificially add it). Yes, you can clap the clave both ways and it will work, but the composer of this montuno decided to use 2-3 clave instead of 3-2 so you need to use the double clave hit for your steps 2 and 3. If it was 3-2, the double clave hit would mark your 6 and 7 step counts.

Addicted2Salsa Some Cuban casino instructors, like Yoel Marrero, would argue that "1" is *always* the first bar of the 3-side of the clave. Dancers choose to focus on the whole melody of a song, rather than just the clave instrument. That's why we hear dancers speak of "2-3" or "3-2" clave, when in fact there is *just* clave: pa-pa-pa (1, 2.5, 4), pa-pa (6-7). Would you agree?

No, Salsa is based on repeated 2 measure clave cycles. Some salsa put the 2 beat in the first and the 3 in the second called 2:3 while others put 3 clave beats in the first measure and 2 in the second called 3:2. If it is 2:3, for example you will typically hear the percussionist play a slightly different kettle drum sound on beat "8" and the "and" between beat 8 and beat 1. This will typically be followed by a note by an instrument, usually the piano on beat 1 and then you will hear the clave hit on beat 2 and beat 3 followed by additional clave beats on beat 5, the "and" between beat 6 and 7 and on beat 8. This gives you the 2:3 rhythm. For 3:2 the clave hits on beat 1 (you won't typically hear a note played here on the piano) and then on the "and" between beats 2 and 3, and then then on beat 4, 6 and 7. I hope this helps.

+Randy Cordle sounds like you know the clave, but his steps on on perfect timing with the clave , do not go buy the paino or the instruments specially congas will throw your step off, listen to the clave is a 2-3 follow that.

The first video is not on the rhythm of the music. I'ts like he's stepping on 3 and 7 instead of 1 and 5. Really confusing for beginners practicing the rhythm. The second video is fine

That is why we made this video. We have gotten a lot of requests from both leads and (and a lot of) follows on helping leads properly dance on the correct timing. A lot of dancers mistake the count 1 and 5 in songs because they focus on the melody instead of the instrument. The important part is to focus on the "Clave" instrument hits instead of the 'melody' for timing your steps in order to know where you are in the counts for your steps. This is a 2-3 clave loop if you are wondering. The two first short hits of the clave are your counts 2 and 3 in your steps when dancing On1.

+harut82 There is no smoke without fire ... If many good dancers see your teacher as off beat , and you are about the onlyone who doesnt see it , better think real hard. I think he is your friend and teacher and you have to support him and that is what you know as dance since he thought you - but there are other good and better dancers out there and if MANY think he is off beat , you better revise you beat ... If you go for competiotion and the judges think you are off beat (of course you or anyone else would think they are on beat), then you would lose dismally. And if you wanted to win anything , or dance with other people from other schools , then you would have to revise your beat. There is an actual case where a teacher thought he was on beat but was off beat and the students followed the teacher , but both the teacher and the students could not dance with other people , they could dance only among themselves ...

I learn salsa now since 2 moths .and Wath u do on the slow one is bull sh... u dance on the five not on the 1 the second is correct. it is not good Wath u show for someone who wanna to learn salsa rhythm.

They learn the same thing and do it among themselves ... no problem. But there will be a problem when thay are dancing with other people from other schools ...

You cant do that if you have no close ties with the guy in the video. It would be a waste of time . So stop lying .. You are friends , student /teacher relationship, or its you commenting under a different name ...

Anthony you have good intentions, but why make a video teaching people how to hear the beat, when you apparently cannot hear it yourself?? I do NOT mean to be rude but this is not acceptable and confusing to new learners. You rush the beat and you are also not even at the top of the phrase. (Your “1” isn’t at the top of the phrase), so your 5 is also in the wrong place, phrase wise. You must dance to the musical phrases in the piece you’ve chosen. Very frustrating to see an instructor teaching people the wrong way to dance salsa ( or any style of dance). You say in your comments that you have some “waveforms” telling you where the beat should be. This tells me you don’t know how to count musical bars yourself. In order to dance well, especially TEACH dance, you must be able to find the top of the phrase, know the time signature of the piece ( hear it in the music) and be able to count it out. I bet you have some friends who are trained musicians or professional dancers ( have a degree in dance) they can help you learn this ESSENTIAL component of dance instruction. Being in denial about it just prevents you from being a better instructor.i wish you the best!!!
