Salmon fishing with Rapala lures. Great Salmon on the Border Esk.

Salmon fishing with Rapala lures. Great Salmon on the Border Esk. 2018. Had a great day spinning for salmon on the Border Esk with Rapala lures, hooked three good fish. I'm only a beginner when it comes to salmon fishing but with a bit of advice on salmon set up and some tips on fishing for salmon (fishing for idiots?!), the Border Esk (uk) came good! Best days fishing ever I think! Maybe fly fishing next time...

Nice little vid:) I am a Norwegian angler with salmon and halibut as main targets and i have been fishing the rapala for 40 years and i would like to suggest downsizing a bit for more takes especially in the 2nd part of the season even at high water. I would also buy the unjointed rapala countdown in 5-7 and 9 cm, orange, greenish and black/white. i very very rarely use the 11 cm even in the big norwegian rivers since experience shows that 5-7-9cm are more efficient on average and especially the 5cm is more and more efficient as the season moves along. rapalas are a bit expensive but they are extremely efficient and normally last for years. Theese tips are if you want to continue fishing with rapala obv. oh and test a lot where you fish, downstream casts, upstream casts with diff speed etc, learn all the tricks u can imagine and you will catch a lot of salmon and quite a bit higher average weight than on worms, spoons, spinners, flies etc.Obv i am a bit biased since i use the rapala myself but i like to see the rapala in action and how other people fish them compared to myself and a salmon angler is never complete and can always learn new tricks so even after 40 years with the rapala i keep searching for people that use them to see what they are doing. Gl on ur coming season this year and give me a couple more vids with salmon caught on the rapala:) Oh and one more thing, ALWAYS replace the otiginal hooks with hooks from Owner etc for more str, original hooks are too weak if you have to put proper heat on big salmon no mather the size of the rapala countdown.

MrKveite1 Massive thanks for watching and your constructive comments. I am very much a salmon fishing novice. I will definitely take what you said on board, especially as our salmon season has just started. Some salmon rivers over here are encouraging the use of single hooks to reduce damage as our salmon populations are quite small, it’s mainly catch and release now. Love the Rapala lures in all shapes and sizes but I do enjoy using some of the older models. Good luck this season, catch a halibut for me. That must be great fishing! Tight lines. 👍🎣

you can fish the rapalas with one or 2 single hooks without any major issues so thats not a problem. All the countdowns can be tuned depending on hooks used or river conditions and it works like this. move the eye up for slower less agressive movement and vice versa and if it comes up to one side under pressure bend the eye the opposite way but be careful:) @@LureoftheOutdoors

Thom Wilson-Parry cheers for watching. Yes the Border Esk. It’s a lovely river that does have a good run of salmon and sea trout. I think I’m on the PA waiting list, they have plenty of water to go at. Hope you manage to get one. Tight lines. 👍🎣

Hi do you think an 11cm rapala is too big for salmon ?

bit late in commenting but can you advise rod weight and length? I'm going spinning for salmon in August and need to buy a rod. i'll be buying some rapalas, sppons and tobys - my main type of fishing is brown trout on the fly so i'm starting my homework now on prepping for a late season salmon trip

I’m very much a novice at salmon fishing so not sure I can offer the best advice. I just used my Bass spinning rod which is around 9foot rated to 35g. That worked fine for me and felt I could cover the river. The Rapala CDJ has always been good for me but now hard to find. Hope you find the info you need and good luck on your trip. 👍🎣

Hi, This is the English side of the River Esk. The beat is called Burnfoot, it’s a Lovely bit of water to fish. Some of the Scottish rivers allow lures when the water is above certain levels. Worth checking a website called Fishpal, they might be able to help you. 👍🎣

the husky jerk in blue an orange 7 or 9 cm is all i use now ,it takes fish everywhere and as mrkveite says bigger sizes are not neccasary and unjointed seems better .by the way a net is a fairy useless thing when salmon fishing unless fishing from a high bank ,far better to unhook in the water

Michael Spencer Thanks for watching and the tips. I’ve got a couple of husky jerks that I use for the pike and they work well. Will pick up a couple in the smaller sizes for next trip. Do you still work them down and across and let them swing round with the current?

@@LureoftheOutdoors yes and the faster the current the higher you lift your rod ,as long as you can feel the lure working . Also good in slacker pools where you need to retrieve
