Salamone Rossi: Sonata quarta sopra l'aria di Ruggiero Voices of Music 4K
Музыка
Salamone Rossi's variations over the "Ruggiero" ground bass. Live, 4K video from the Voices of Music "Concerto delle Donne" concert, October, 2019. Performed on original instruments.
Salamone Rossi (שלמה מן האדומים) was a pioneer in the development of the trio sonata and the violin. Book three was published in Venice in 1613, and our edition was made from the extant 1623 print.
Rossi uses the repeating harmonic pattern, or ground bass for most of the sonata, breaking out in a walking bass at the conclusion. The ground bass was known in the 17th century as "Ruggiero," probably a reference to Ariosto's immmensely popular Orlando Furioso ("Ruggier, qual sempre fui, tal esser voglio"). Rossi writes a note to the musicians "si replica l'ultima parte ma più presto"--play the repeat faster. And so we did!

Absolutely sublime
We had this piece played at my Italian-Jewish wedding. It is one of Rossi's best, for sure. And this particular performance is really extraordinary.

As always, many thanks VoM for giving me a little piece of musical gold. Your combination of interpretative warmth and technical clarity is a rare treat.
The speeded up repeats really make the piece feel joyous. I wonder why that style element went away in later music...
Oooh yes!! Wonderful... 👏👏👏👏👏❤🎩🌹🎻🎼 CONGRATULATIONS!! 💕💕 Love from Italy 🇮🇹🇮🇹

Rossi created a new voice for Jewish prayers that struck heartstrings unlike ever before. His perfection led to be a close associate os Monteverdi

Allah ahkbar!! XIV. R THANK YOU FOR APPRECIATING MY WORK
I hear those flutes again! I'm totally unfamiliar with the composer; had to listen twice to this delightful piece. I realize that my favorite baroque pieces are "standards." Thanks for expanding my audioscape.
Listening to these videos individually I hadn't really thought until now of how amazing it must be to see a whole concert of these performances! I'd never want it to end! Thank you for sharing your immense talents with the world!

Very nice.

Why would someone dislike this?
Thank you again !! Uplifting and beautiful music played with mastery, spirit and passion. Which of you does the musical direction? Oops.... just reread the notes and you've answered my question.
They don’t make it easy for themselves playing at that tempo, do they? Exciting and delightful
Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit!
So odd seeing Mr. Tayler sans theorbo. The beautiful music reminded me of Michael Radford's "The Merchant of Venice" with period music by Jocelyn Pook.

OMG, thank you so much!!!
For the 17th Century, Rossi enjoyed a particular privilege in being a composer for BOTH the Jewish AND Catholic liturgies. The Catholic church hierarchy respected so much as to "allow" him to publicly wear the Star of David while working IN the Catholic Church. Proof that a great composer can overcome ANY kind of prejudice or otherwise oppressive society. No small accomplishment from a period when the Inquisition was in its full power & terror. "HA! NO ONE ever expects the Spanish Inquisition!" - Monty Python.
Beautiful, can you explain what timbre level youre playing ?

The pitch is A=466 Hz.
Salomone, non Salamone! In italiano, Salamone vuol dire grosso salame...

That's the way the composer spelled it; so that's the way we spell it. Also Salamon and Schlomo de' Rossi.
