I absolutely hate the trend of making absolutely unlikeable and quirky characters in modern games. Especially when it betrays what made the older games so likable. BF 2042 tried it and it is a soulless shell of its former self, now the same has happened to this dumpster fire. There could be something funny there as satire; that even hardened big criminals can't escape the all consuming hole of privatization and rent, similar to how in Robocop corporations having control over the justice system for a dollar. But like in Robocop it requires a lot of cleverness, wit and soul in the writing to make it work: something the writers for this game evidently lack.

Blackwater mercs apparently make $9k a month. It might have worked if they made it a kind of dystopian cyber-city, where life is cheap and death is common, but then they wouldn't be making a Saint's Row game and these annoying brats still wouldn't fit in.

The thing about Saints Row... the story WAS meant to be serious with some wacky under/overtones, and surrounded by side content that was just downright insane. The Devs seem to have forgotten that after Saints Row 2 and just leaned almost all in on the "wacky" side of it without having the seriousness to balance it out.

The tonal shift between the second and third game is really noticeable and even though the third was fun, it started the series trend of trying to cram every over powered weapon and raunchy joke in the following games effectively leaving no room for sequels because they overstimulated their audience. Honestly, they could have brought back the series with the reboot if they took inspiration from the first two games and put a new creative spin on it

@@telecentric2103 i do agree...but i will say, it's not sr3 as a whole to blame, i'd say that it was that one mission where you have temporary powers that is the big culprit. along w/ the humor of that mission, it directly contributed to sr4 existing. even then, sr4 had at least a small bit to like about it compared to this game, which i wouldn't even call it a saints row game.

SR2 was the perfect amount of goofy and serious, and definitely the only game out of them that was a serious GTA competitor. 3 and 4 felt like they were written by a teenager with unmedicated ADHD, fun but pure cringefests

To think it was actually a time when GTA vs. Saints Row was a real debate.

Yeah the only music you get here is 4 80's tracks and 1 actual game song and that's it, they completely forgot to add music

This is what happens when the creatives get abused by greedy corpo scum, forcing them to leave the business. The empty soul of the original art is used like a flesh mask on a mentally ill sociopath trying to emulate the original idea while completely missing the topic. Unfortunately, the market is so saturated with extremely stupid people and small children that they can make anything and be successful as long as they avoid too much negative press. Long story short, Charlie is doing the opposite to help stop this by showing the game and promoting it, even just by criticizing it. Saint-Row 1: mostly serious satyre/rip-off of GTA San-Andreas, serious story, serious universe Saint-Row 2: satyre of the GTA franchise with humour focusing on over-the-top action and gap between serious scenes and it's absurde/cartoony universe saint-row 3: parody of itself, family guy type of "ahaha funny", filled with references, everyone is a cartoon character living in a cartoon world saint-row 4: parody of a parody of it's own-franchise, ahah dildos and funny BDSM jokes, everyone is a cartoon character, gave-up any ambitions of building a serious world i can't even begin to imagine what saint-row 5 would be

In the old games there would've probably been a mission where you deal with an imposter gang and it's these chucklefucks. And Gat or Pierce or somebody would ask, "Yo, do we really sound like this?" Followed by the cockney accented reply, being, "maybe we do, but at least we can back it the fuck up."

I knew the writing would be trash as soon as I read some interview where the devs complained that the old Saints were "too mean-spirited" or some crap like that. These people shouldn't have been in charge of rebooting Saints Row, they don't even like the kind of tone or attitude that is core to a video game series all about organized criminals.

I'm not surprised that it's bad at all, I'm more so surprised an angered by how little it even resembles a Saints Row game. Literally nothing about the plot, characters, setting, or humor feels like the earlier SR games. If the gameplay were dogshit but they at least got the world/tone right I'd be less upset, but this isn't a Saints Row game outside of the branding and minor lip service. Hell, the fact they changed jokes after being *afraid to upset anyone* just shows how out of touch they are with the series.

You can have make awful people relatable on some level, but this definitely isn't it. The biggest issue is the fact that they all talk like Big Bang Theory characters and obviously despise one another. Maybe if they actually talked with one another and did shit because they thought it'd be fun they wouldn't be so despised. Take the waffle maker scene as an example. It's just a bunch of petty assholes insulting one another and acting like absolute cheapskates over a fucking waffle maker. They're all so casual about stealing cars and killing people (and don't believe in doing business with "morally corrupt corporations" such as Marshall's) but we definitely need to legally buy a $300 waffle maker? Sure I guess. Just makes the characters motivations confusing and make them unrelatable.

Charlie's character is a pretty good representation of the writers of this game.

the moment I saw the studio and some rag publications talk about how positively "inclusive" and "diverse" this game was I knew it was going to be trash. Those buzzwords are red flags at this point. 7:10 Am I the only person that thought. “You’re criminals! Why do you need to pay back your loans?” When this game came out. Since, that’s the whole motivation for the story.

Back in Saints 3, my favorite thing to do was to drive to the airport and blast danger zone over the ingame music … I’d fly to my objective like it was it’s own mini mission to me every part of that game was fun

The old saints row games would mock this new game. It’s so sad how we went from upcoming new saints gang member, trying to take back stilwater and revenging Aisha, getting revenge for Johnny and taking over this new city filled with crazy new mechanics and missions, becoming President but fighting off aliens, shooting Satan in the face. To what paying student loans? The Boss and Johnny would tag team beating these new saints to the ground. Disgusting.

Dude this genuinely pisses me off... I played saints row 1 and 2 my whole childhood and I am so disgusted at what they've done to this game. The community has told them countless times that we do NOT like what they did after saints row 2.. they refuse to listen to the people actually buying and playing their games and they just wanna throw this game so far into the ether that it can't be recognized anymore.. this needs to be a free to play game and I hope the development team goes broke. They deserve nothing less..

It's funny how despite nearly killing the franchise, Sonic '06 somehow manages to be a more competent reboot than most that came out in recent years.

Some things are better left alone than strung along by soulless corporate execs for a quick buck. The way I feel about SR is the same with Halo after Bungie closed the book on it with Halo Reach, its legacy should've been left alone instead of transformed into something unrecognizable. You see this happening with a lot of tv/movies/books being rebooted or adapted as well to be "brought up to modern standards," the result is you get amateur schlock seemingly made by people with no actual experience writing and directing quality movies only to be defended by the most fringe communities on Reddit/Twitter. If you go to the SR Reddit you will find people saying "If Volition goes bankrupt, it's bad for all of us"... No, if they go bankrupt it's literally the result of them driving their only good franchise into the dirt for years.

SR4 was great too imo but just a lot different, this game isn't even bad in a funny way

I remember trying the character creator demo for this and wondering how the hell they managed to make a bunch of options completely worthless. Like there's like 10 faces you can switch between parts of and then barely adjust with sliders, but none of them work unless they're alongside the other pieces of that same face, and only one face really fit the head itself, so it was basically just a waste of a customiser unless you wanted to make your character look intentionally horrific. Lol, the original Saints were borderline unhinged, all of them. These ones look like if someone hit their car they'd angrily post about it on twitter and do nothing else.

I know i may have exaggerated about them all being useless, but the main issue with most of the face parts was that they were like 20% deeper or wider than each other resulting in them looking like some weird glued on clay blob rather than facial features. The old games weren't exactly perfect, but they were leagues better than this.

@@TuffMelon oh nah it was still Mid at best, I fucked around with the Male first as I tend to always play male, then female in games with character customization. The female side of things deff highlighted the shortcomings for me, as all the faces seemed to be just slight edits of one another. Tbh I always am let down when devs claim “ground breaking customization!” And it is just sliders. I think, even though it was a pretty mid game; Fallout 4 ACTUALLY had a very in depth system where you can make basically anything. I 100% agree that each option was just a bit wider or narrower but; I tend to spend an obnoxious amount of time fiddling due to OCD and my love for making decent looking characters.

The budget went into the character customization, then slowly dwindled with everything else
