Sailor's Hornpipe Highland Dance competition during 2022 Atholl Gathering Highland Games in Scotland

Competitors in the Sailor's Hornpipe during the 2022 Atholl Gathering Highland Games in Scotland. The Atholl Gathering and Games are held at Atholl Estates and Blair Castle in beautiful Perthshire, Scotland on the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May each year.
The Sailor's Hornpipe was originally a Celtic dance and is one of the Scottish National Dances, originally played on a hornpipe rather than bagpipes. It is also one of the few Highland Dances that has its own unique costume for competitions and the moves imitate many shipboard activities typical in the days of wooden ships. You may recognise rope hauling, climbing the shroud lines, and others sailing activities.

I’ve always wondered why this dance has “options” that other Highland Dances do not? I might not remember if dances like The Sword ⚔️ Dance or others have variations? Highland Dancing is very different from Irish Step Dancing. Both are physically exhausting but beautiful. Appalachian Mountain dancing is closely related to Step dancing. It has a couple of different styles. One is called Buck Dancing the other is more competitive and called Clogging. It is closer to Step Dancing and has competitions and exhibitions. Just about All Bluegrass Festivals, some of the crowd will breakout into Buck Dancing. Exhibitions of Clogging Teams will Dance on stage. These are not to be confused with Square Dancing which is related to Cowboy Days from Western States. Square Dancing is not as exhausting and has a “caller” to direct the dancers on the different moves. Thank Yall for bringing these Dances and Music to this country back in the 1700’s and before. Thank Yall for these videos🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scots Wha HAE🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Highland Dances like the Sword do have options (The sword has 8 steps to choose from often with multiple alternate methods per each step). However many popular videos are from Championships, in which all the dancers must compete the same set steps. That’s likely why you wouldn’t remember if they had variations or not :)

Just a normal dance competition there’s no finals only if you win each section you move on the highest amount of wins in the dances is the winner as I known from when I did it in Australia 20 or 30 years ago
