I'm a big fan of Chinese pens like Jinhao, Moonman / Majohn, Wing Sung, Asvine etc. Their quality is better than they get credit for, and amazing for the price. And it's nice to have a lower priced pen to take around and not worry about so much. Great video, looking forward to seeing what you've added to your fountain pen collection.

I completely agree with all of that!! After trying this, ‘better than they get credit for and amazing for the price’ sums up EXACTLY how I felt. I take my nicer pens to meetups and stuff but really don’t take them out for errands or whatever because I don’t want to risk even just dropping them. Thanks so much for watching, I’m excited to film my updated pen collection soon!

Jinhao is upping the value by making proper fine-extra fines*, plastics got better, this gets incredibly more 'malicious' but they are providing value-cost performance alternative, and no one is fooled by Jinhao nor Sailor, one for the value conscious, one other to go for an artisan subjective experience that cost performance expectation comparison is definitely out of the window with $100+ pens🤣 *to me this is the breakthrough that Jinhao needs and option that the user base would want, because their fine nib used to be like western medium. oh and cracks... 992

Well, the plastics have stayed the same, but Jinhao makes them look better. Even they "acrylic" pens aren't really acrylic at all by western standards. Just like their "brass" pens. China defines what brass is much differently than the rest of the world.

"I don't want to have too many pens." Famous last words. I didn't think I would have more than 10, then 20. Gave up after that, because 50 pens later here I am. Saying that 51(Sailor King of Pen, speaking of Sailor) just came today, and 52 just ordered today. I know, I have a wonderful problem.

LOL I know that’s true becauuuuse… when I FIRST got into fountain pens I said “oh, I just want one. Just one pen for black ink and that’s all I need. I’m not going to start buying a bunch or using inks in different colors or anything.” and look at me now… 15 pens currently 😂 that’s after I sold a few lol! and a drawer of ink that just increased by 4 bottles today 😅 it’s like I always say, it could be worse. There are worse problems to have!!

@@amandaleighplans I have never sold a pen yet. It's on my mind though, .... for the last couple of months. I am glad I don't have an ink problem though, saying that with 30ish inks, but I'm more the pen person. I just bought those plastic drawer towers so I could put my inks, stationary, and pen tools in. Those ain't cheap either. Who knew where this would lead. All I wanted was may be one good pen, may be five.

@@ironmic9244 I love destashing because sometimes our interests change! Or you just want money for the new pen that came out… and a “trade” feels better on the wallet LOL. I’m actually the same, I have probably about 25-30 inks now too so I haven’t gone too crazy. A good variety of colors but pens are really what gets me. Oooh I love storage… finding nice ways to store my stationery is it’s own hobby right there lol. I bought some pen drawer liners from Penn State Industries I have inside an acrylic drawer to display them… it looks nice, they’re easy to grab and keeps them safe!!

@@amandaleighplans I'd love to download some pens, especially some of my steel nibs. I find gold nibs a better writing experience, plus I like the pens they are attached too. But it's more about the size of the pen. I guess since I started buying gold nibs, I have scrutinized the dimensions of the pen, and they are just a better fit, so I guess that is why I like the writing experience more. I have a good mix of colors, but yeah, not crazy. I like my blues, and greys, colors I know I can use anywhere and everywhere, but I look for the different shades of those colors. don't have many samples either. It's all about the pens baby! I needed some storage. I was getting out of hand. Boxes for inks, boxes for stationary and ink journals, drawers and boxes for pen boxes. I get a good presentation, especially with a more expensive pen, but seriously the sizes of these boxes relative to the pen. Got me one of those Sterilite 3 foot towers with 3 drawers on sale for $15. The 5 drawer might work better, but that runs $30. Do I really want to spent that much??? Do I?? Also bought a Leonardo Pen Chest. That was quite a bit too. Oh and 48 pen Girologio pen case, which I haven't really used yet.

I just got one of these Jinhao 82 pens and I love it. I’ve always liked the look of Sailor pens, but I’m not a Sailor fan. I am not a fan of nibs with feedback because I prefer toothy paper. This Jinhao is adorable and it’s pretty smooth. Mine is in the ‘cream white’ color, but it’s actually a semi-transparent cream/ white/ yellow with a red tip on the cap. It reminds me of a dirty martini 🍸 😊

I have 5 Sailors, some gold nib and some steel nib, and they all have some feedback - but definitely some more than others! That pro gear slim I used in the video has the most feedback and funny enough it’s my favorite. There’s a very noticeable difference between those and my Pilots, which are very smooth… at least from my personal experience!

These Chinese fountain pens only obstacle right now is them not being able to copy Japanese F and EF nibs's line width. Jinhao and Wing sung can definitely recreate Japanese and American/Western M nibs now.

Yup that’s me! I think this is my legacy now… just kidding, but it has become an inside joke with me and my friends 😂 I totally decided to hold my pen the correct way for all future fountain pen videos just so I didn’t get so many of the same comments again LOL. See I do know how!! Hahaha it’s just more comfortable for me to write long term with the way I naturally grip 🤪 sometimes when I’m writing I’ll switch back and forth between grips, mainly depending on what part of the page I’m writing on and how thick the notebook is lol (if that makes sense, hate when your hand hangs off the side!).. you can’t tell the difference in writing sample between the two grips besides an ever so slightly thicker line from the leaned back angle so I often just switch back & forth if I’m writing a full page lol! But yes, KZread videos… we’re going with the correct way from now on 🤣🫡

@@amandaleighplans If it works better for you to use your natural grip, then use it. The whole point of fountain pens is for you to feel comfortable when writing. I brought it up because you were having issues with the Kaweco, was it? Coming from a ballpoint to a fountain pen is a totally different way of writing. With a ballpoint one has to hold the pen more vertically to exert the pressure to get the ink flowing. Do what works. You may even naturally over time change your grip. I have always had the traditional grip, but I have noticed how my grip has changed over the years of using fountain pens. My grip is way more relaxed now, there is more spacing between my index and thumb, but that also depends on the section of the pen. But the major differences are the relaxed grip and I hold a pen high up the section, and I really uses a light touch now. Yeah, I hate when I get near the end of a page because I don't have anything to rest my hand now since I am not as vertical. My cursive turns to printing, and then I switch back to cursive when I start atop a new page. I just learned from digital class to move the notebook around to the position you want, instead of moving your hand, wrist or arm. I think that might help. But one needs some space on their desk for that, but I will try it and see if it helps. In case you interested these classes are put on by Montblanc. They have these digital calligraphy and handwriting classes. Lots of people attend from all over the world but mostly North America, and it's a fun way to break up your day from the norm. Check it out if you want to learn calligraphy. It's free!

I don't buy Chinese pens because, well, some of the money goes to the government, and the government uses it to commit ongoing genocide, dissident murder, political imprisonment, and preparing for WWIII, which includes building thousands of nuclear weapons, teaming up with Russia, planning on invading Taiwan, on and on. But I have friends in China who keep sending me pens, mostly Jinhao, Wingsung, and Hongdian. I owe them a lot, so I agree to test the pens before donation them or tossing them. Writing well is easy, and any pen should do this much, but these pens cost about thirty cents to make, and even with the slave wages China pays, you can't get quality materials at that price. The plastic is far cheap than what Kaweco uses, the Furniture is very, very low-grade metal, and so is the nib. Worse, the tipping on the nib is the same low-grade metal the nib itself uses. My friends there are pretty well split between knife manufacturing and fountain pen manufacturing, and one of them said something that sums it up. He said, "We make very cheap toys out of very cheap materials and sell them to outsiders as adult tools." That says it all. Other countries sell low-priced, high-quality pens. China sells low-quality, high-priced pens. At least high-priced compared to actual manufacturing costs and materials used. Sometimes you get more than you pay for, and sometimes you get what you pay for, but with Chinese pens you always get a lot less than you pay for.
