My grandparents learned to sail on Great Slave Lake. Ended up circumnavigating the whole Ocean. Great Video
Wondrous. What an amazing journey you both had. A great adventure. Thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thanks.😊

Thank you, Robert!
Looks like a completely amazing trip Dave, thank you for sharing it!!! I had never heard of the lake before your video-I found it because I have a M17 and have been watching what I can find. A friend of mine speaks of exploring Lake Nipigon but that is many miles south!! I live in the upper Peninsula of Michigan. Thanks again!

It was a great trip. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great trip👍🏼
Wow!! you and your son rock! What an ambitious adventure and with a little hand held GPS. Loved this
The fish in my profile pic came from the lake you sailed two summers later. What an extraordinary body of water, you certainly saw a lot more of it than I. Thanks for sharing this, I want to go back.
Beautiful trip. Thank you for sharing it.
I loved your video/journal presentationof a great sailing trip on Great Slave Lake! My husband, Peter and our 2 sons had a week's boating trip on Great Slave in 2007. They motored in a 20 ft. freight canoe built in Prevost Quebec. They navigated using maps only. No marine charts. They followed the South shore which was reportedly very shallow. It was an epic trip taken in late August. My son did not pack enough food and they foraged for berries and such whilst overnight camping on the islands. The weather was very rough with heavy winds. They got marooned on Stoney Island for 2 days, in a storm. My husband got incredibly sick and our sons took turns motoring the canoe back to Fort Resolution. Peter
Have watched this several times. It helped me decide on a Monty. Enjoying it and learning a lot. What a trip to take. Thanks again.

It was a great trip!
Hold it there's sailboats on Great Slave Lake? Amazing
Wow I'm glad I found this video! I've lived in Yellowknife for 15 years, and only two years ago worked up the nerve to go outside Yellowknife bay in my little 16' "Weekender". My friend and I went out for five days and didn't get farther than Moose Bay because we spent a lot of time each day sleeping in and cooking meals. Probably only sailed four hours per day! But you made it out to where we meant to go! I can't believe you drove all the way up here from California! If you ever do it again, we can team up!

Sounds like a plan!
rare footage of a big lake. thanks for sharing!
Wow, what an adventure. The drive alone was more than most would attempt. I like your presentation style, not much of a talker.
Amazing trip. I have wanted to sail for years. Taking classes in 2 months, then retiring in a year. But will get a boat by spring. Live in Colusa, CA. But will move to Reno... ah Lake Tahoe... will be home waters.
Cool destination !!

It was a great place to go. I recommend it and look forward to returning soon.
What a beautiful trip! Would love to read about it in Small Craft Advisor!
David, Great video - very enjoyable and well put together. Thanks for sharing it. Question: What solar panel did you use and were you happy with its performance?

+Randy Graves Thanks, Randy! It was a great trip. I hate to say that I don't remember what the solar panel is but I do know I bought it cheap ($50 to $60) on Amazon as a proof of concept panel. It's worked great and kept a standard car battery full during out trip, mostly charging phones, cameras, and speakers.
Beutiful
Great video! A few questions: (1) Did the bugs make it out to your boat? (2) Did you have to worry about rocks just below the surface?

Thanks! The bugs made it out to the boat but not really until dusk which started late and ended early. When the mosquitoes came there were a lot of them, so many they made a lot of noise. The mosquito netting kept them at bay pretty well though. Yes, there were a lot of rocks though generally well charted. The main issue was when we needed to or chose to go someplace they were and then we were just very careful.
How many people can say they have sailed on Great Slave Lake?
Did you guys catch any lake trout or northern pike for supper? I have made many trips to go fishing up there. Did you check out any of the other lakes near by like prelude and Prosperous lake?

We only did a little fishing, I am sorry to say, and didn't eat what we caught. We also were entirely focused on Great Slave Lake so missed visiting other lakes in the area.
Can you tell me about how you plumbed the external fuel tank? I have been considering doing the same, but determined the fuel might not flow due to the Hondas lack of fuel pump. How does it work?

Sure, Erik. I bought another gas cap and drilled a hole in the top to accept a hose fitting. I drilled another hole as a vent. I connect a hose with a bulb pump from the external gas can to the fitting. Periodically, I pump the bulb 10 to 30 times to put gas in the engine's tank or to fill it, depending on the need at that time. Works great!

@@dgrah Gotcha. So it's not feeding it, it's just a semi permanently connected tank that you can pump gas from. I'm considering trying to rig something up so it will automatically feed.

@@ErikEdney Correct. This system works great for us.

@@dgrahJust a follow up to this. Do you ever worry about the vent hole that you had to drill leaking?
@dgrah
2 жыл бұрын
@@ErikEdney Well, I do worry a little because it does leak if the tank is full and I tilt the motor up. If I can just remember to keep the tank less than full when I tilt it up, it is no problem. I'm not certain the hole is needed but it seemed to make sense and I'd put it in again despite the bit of leaking.
